Dolgathan

The fell necromancer Dolgathan was once the Scourge of Lozar, a title he earned in the chaotic years before the founding of the Concordance for Survival. He warred with Chagroth Durinhelm for control of the nascent Kirinal Pit. He came within a hair's breadth of defeating the Navigator of Worlds several times.

One of the two founding warlords of the Empire of Borthakar, his mixed legacy includes fathering the legendary hero Gemini Dolgathason, his son who literally saved the world from the Elder Evils.

As an orcling growing up in the Empire, I had to memorize the Feats of the Founders, the Deeds of Dolgathan, and the Acts of Aurag. At the Academy, if you couldn't rattle them off right outtta your noggin, they'd give you a lashing! I wasn't a particularly good student, and I've still got the stripes on my back to prove it!

Originally a general in the Lich-King's army, Dolgathan was trapped in the cold tundra of northern Krosia after his master's defeat. Trapped far from their home in Safara, he and his ally Aurag, the Fist of Ar-Tamak, refused to retreat. Instead, they held the land they had conquered for themselves, founding the Empire of Borthakar.

Aurag crowned himself the First Emperor of Borthakar, ruling over the living. Dolgathan laid claim to the Dead of Kirinal, the countless souls slain in the Disintegration of Kirinal.

The necromancer set his sights on the newly created Kirinal Pit, vying with Chagroth Durinhelm for control of the multiversal rift. The dead souls trapped in the Pit became fuel for his necromantic rituals. He raised them as skeletal armies. He pulped their flesh together to raise an undead kaiju.

Finally, he achieved his true goal of dracomorphosis, transforming himself into a black dracolich. Swollen with necrotic might, Dolgathan stood on the cusp of godhood.

The scars Dolgathan left on the land have never fully healed. His twisted soul-binding magic cursed the Dead of Kirinal, trapping their souls in the Pit. Their prolonged suffering led directly to the creation of the Soulforged. The god Anam built the Soul Forge as reparation for the exploited dead.

The Progeny of Dolgathan

Dolgathan's influence can still be seen all across Krosia. His necromantic experiments birthed undead horrors that still plague the continent to this day. Armies of ghouls, aswang broods, and the occasional undead kaiju are the direct result of his rituals and war campaigns.

As co-founder of the Empire of Borthakar, Dolgathan established one of the foundations of the Concordance for Survival. Even though he was a true villain, many of his actions (intended or not) helped shape the modern world. Without the Empire's contribution in the final battles of the War Against the Far Realm, the Concordance would never have been formed.

Dolgathan's son, Gemini Dolgathason, was the Avatar of Naraky and one of the great heroes of the Concordant Age. It was Gemini who lured the Elder Evils beyond the Crystal Sphere of Kirinal ending the Far War and securing the safety of the world.

The nobles of House Geminon claim descent from Gemini Dolgathason, not his infamous father, but the name of their founder speaks for itself. His shadow looms over his descendants, whether they embrace his name or not.

I mourned the loss of Kirinal Bright as I mourn the loss of a child. I was there when it was born. I was there as it grew. I was there when the Lich-King killed it. And when his lackey came to feast on the corpse, I pulled up my roots and I fought. I was there when he burned the souls. I stood against the zombie that was as tall as mountains. I rejoiced when the dracolich was defeated.

I love the idea that such a dark figure fathered a hero.

Thank you! He was the villain of a D&D campaign and I definitely did a Luke/Darth Vader situation to one of my players!

Ah, I can see that! That's really cool. I enjoyed the article before reading this comment, but I love the context this provides.

Thanks Chris. He's been on my list for a LONG time! When my players fought this guy, we were listening to the brand new "Blade" soundtrack on CD!
