Runestones

Since magic is a sparse resource and even fewer know how to enchant items, Runestones were invented after discovering Dragonstone. At first these too were a rare resource, but soon a Runesmith could be found in every major town. Runestones became more common place and was the go to method of equipping magical weapons. The practice soon spread to armour as well. After just two decades since it's discovery, Runestones had doubled the amount of magical items all over the world, and it only continued to grow.

The use of Runestones are for the most part easy and straight forward. As long as there is an empty Runeslot you can insert a Runestone as a two part action. The first is simply to put the Runestone into the Runeslot, once in it is hard to get out since it should be a perfect fit, but can be taken out by anyone. The second step is twisting the Runestone into place, this activates the magic and it can no longer be removed by anyone other than a Runesmith.

However, this process is made more complicated by the fact that there is differnet types of Runestones and each type needs a matching Runeslot to work. The five types are:
  • Offensive: Combat oriented Runestones, meant to help deal damage or other benefits.
  • Defensive: Mostly combat oriented Runestones, meant to make armour tougher, make you faster or other benefits.
  • Supportive: Versatile Runestones, that can be used both in and out of combat for healing, curing poison or other benefits.
  • Utility: Helpful Runestones, meant to make your life outside of combat easier or more comfortable.
  • Specialist: Unique Runestones, they either don't have a category meaning they can be put into any Runeslot regardless of category or they have multiple needing a specialist Runeslot.

Futhermore, the magic in Runestones works in three different ways, changing how they should be used.
  • Single use: Once twisted into place these Runestones burn and melt from their own magic as it flows into the item. The item then has the magic until it runs out, this can be expected to usually be at least an hour or more. They have been nicknamed Burnstones.
  • Temporary: Once twisted into place these Runestones confer their magic into the item for as long as it remains socketed. However, they are not made to be removed again and if they are, they too melt and break.
  • Permanent: Once twisted into place these Runestones confer their magic into the item for as long as it remains socketed. Unlike Temporary Runestones, theses can be removed without loosing their magic or breaking, and can then be put into a new item.

Runesmith usually take 15gp to make a Runestone slot, doubled for a specialist slot. It varies greatly in price for taking a Runestone out, some only wanting a few silver and others wanting multiple gold pieces.
