The World of Fior is a low magic setting, powerful magic wielders are few and far between and often come only once in a generation. The most prominent form of magic is in
Runestones that can hold magic potentially forever.
Despite magic being rare, magical creatures and monsters are abundant and can be found just about anywhere. In the early ages it was hard to settle down anywhere, being nomadic was simply the way to surivie. Slowly over the centuries settlements started appearing, with walls and soldiers to protect themselves. These small towns quickly grew into citystates governing thousands of people, the first beacons of civilisation. From there they spent years hunting various monsters and creatures, many to extinction, but some no matter what they tried always seemed to reappear after some time. Because of this practice, honor became the motivation for people, honor in killing a dangerous monster, or in protecting your land. Soon a family name could open doors if a relative was even slighlty famous. Soon
Noble houses started springing up and being in power.
As the
Noble houses power grew towns could start growing outside of citystates under the protection of a military. Vast trade networks sprung up between towns and cities, making each more prosperous. However, not being organized began to take it's toll, and fighting started happening over small disputes. Wars began, with each town fighting for itself while the citystates tried to create peace, but no one was working together. The biggest of the
Noble houses met to discuss these uncertain times, and came up with a system of goverance. The land would be divided into kingdoms, with the powerful houses appointing a king and queen (often their own patriarch or matriarch). These kings and queens would make the laws of the land, and any that did not follow them would be punished.
Nevertheless, new threats are looming on the horizon, it is no longer the peace minded kings of old sitting on the thrones, and some want more power than they have. Tensions have been rising, and magical creatures and monsters seem to spring from every corner. Old mages tell of foul winds and tainted magic. It is the age of kingdoms, but some call it the age of doom.
