Verdaner

The Farmer, He Who Plants the Seeds, The One That Brings Together, He Who Tends the Fields

In the turbulent years following the Great Purge  a lot of knowledge was lost to the people of Fulkran. In some cases it was advanced metallurgy, in others architectural techniques or perhaps mining methods. Of course historical archives where hit the hardest, but, devastatingly, some areas lost the knowledge of agriculture. In one such place there remained only one person with the know-how to cultivate crops. People flocked to the little hobgoblin and he shared his bounty with all comers. When it was clear that his stores could not support the increasing number of people that kept arriving, he shared his knowledge with them. That marked the start of a small self sustaining community.

It was not long before bandits and other desperate people tried to take advantage of this stable community. The little hobgoblin led the defense of his settlement by demand of his charges, but it was a rare occasion when they had to actually fight. The hobgoblin managed to talk his way out of most conflicts by offering diplomatic solutions that usually ended up assimilating the aggressors in the growing settlement to one degree or another. But even when push came to shove the diminutive farmer proved to be a ferocious fighter and an inspiration to his followers.

In this way the small community grew to not so small a size, always relying on its citizens working together to become stronger. The little hobgoblin's name became a rallying cry, a beacon of hope and a promise of stability in a time when those luxuries where all but extinct. That little hobgoblin's name was Verdaner, and the adoration and gratitude of the people he helped resulted in his ascension as the first post-Purge deity.

Tenets of Faith

He Who Plants the Seeds preaches that people should work together and in mutual support to grow ever stronger, just as a farmer works with the land to grow strong and healthy crops to the benefit of all. In fact his faith promotes cooperation as the proper response to pretty much any challenge. Even one sided expressions of support are favored by Verdaner such as sharing one's food without having anything to gain.

A part of The Farmer's dogma that is often overlooked has to do with growth. More specifically with the idea of growing stronger. Of course the primary way to achieve that is through the support and cooperation of others, but one is expected to be strong and able to stand on their own as well. Verdaner does not use mutual support as a crutch to cover individual weakness, although that is not frowned upon in any way. Rather he promotes cooperation as a way to maximize one's strengths and as a road to self sufficiency for all involved. However, even if self sufficiency is achieved, followers of The One That Brings Together are reminded that the aim is still to be able to help others with even greater effect and not to outgrow and ignore them.

Verdaner's priests combine these tenets with being active in the fields of the communities they serve. They offer blessings to the land and help ensure a good harvest while making sure that no one is excluded from the bounty.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

Verdaner is a good natured deity always willing to shoulder more weight in order to help out those who need him. His chief motivation is to help his followers become stronger, healthier and more tightly knit as a group so they can go on and offer the same benefit to others. To that end he is always meddling in mortal affairs in a variety of usually small and subtle ways, nudging events towards beneficial resolutions. Many point out that it is that constant meddling that according to The Rules of Divinity allows other deities to regularly affect the world, often in ways contrary to The Farmer's wishes, but it is against Verdaner's nature to sit idly by and watch events unfold.

As can be expected the god's very nature and domain offer themselves to good relations with other gods. Indeed He Who Plants the Seeds is on good terms with Aiyonia and Petros as their outlooks are very compatible in some ways. There is also a passing friendship with Astra, Forgaron and Tal'Thin'Dal, mainly because they have nothing to disagree on. Not everything is rosy for He Who Tends the Fields of course. There is an active rivalry with Gar over her vicious ways, and the cruel nature of Zarinia is very distasteful to The Farmer.
