Petros

The Land God

An earthly elemental god, Petros is as neutral and impartial as the soil, as eternal as the land itself. He was created by the terrible magic unleashed during the Great Purge as it seeped into the very ground, even as it tore it apart. Thus Petros is the awakened spirit of the land. He was born from the lifeblood of Kanlyn and drew her last breath as his first, but started his life in the midst of pain and injury.

In the beginning Petros was a restless deity and often shook the earth as he twisted and turned under the agony of his wounds. It was the dwarven Priest-Smith Selden that forged the Pact that finally calmed Petros. Under the Pact the god was promised the souls of the dead in return for his best efforts to actually lie still and be quiet. At the time the deal was struck most remnants of civilization had turned to burning the deceased to avoid disease. As people found that areas that buried their dead and offered them to Petros were indeed plagued with fewer and fewer earthquakes, landslides and such, the custom of burning the dead was quickly replaced by burial all over Fulkran.

Petros was finally able to stabilize his wounds and ease his pain using the strength of the souls he was given to speed his recovery. With time the magic that was lodged in his injuries began to ooze back out into the world allowing Archmage Astra to ascend as Kanlyn's replacement. This in turn led to the eventual return of Magic to Fulkran and a peculiar friendship between the two gods.

For centuries Petros kept recovering with help and support from Astra. He developed a severe dislike for undead, because he is robbed of their souls. He views their creation as a breaking of the Pact, except when done by clerics to whom he has given permission. On the other hand he has a love for all things living and for creation, especially that of new life.

But just as Petros was almost whole again the War of Four Armies brought terrible new wounds upon him. Once again in pain and newly weakened by the close to one million strong undead army, the earth god decided it was time to sever his connection to the land and walk free. To that end he began gathering souls anew.

Petros is on good terms with Aiyonia, for they share their passion for creation, and also with Gaudin the Mastersmith, god of fire and metal, patron of the cafts and art, for pretty much the same reason. He dislikes and opposes Alathea and Zarinia, because they often claim souls that should be his, but at the same time, he has a grudging respect for Alathea and her life giving aspect. He is also friendly with Verdaner.
