Alathea

The Lady of the Sea, The Lifegiver, The Wellspring

Alathea and her sister Zarinia came onto the divine stage shortly after the Great Purge. She represents the mild beneficial side of the sea. As such she can be depended upon to try to help any who call upon her if they are within her reach. This generally includes anyone on or near a healthy body of water. However, she is still bound by the Rules of Divinity, and given her constant rivalry with her sister, she is always careful about what form that help will take and to what length it will go, lest she allow Zarinia too much freedom and the opportunity to tip the scales in her favor permanently. This means that Alathea's interventions are most usually subtle and limited in scope. Guiding a lost boat back to shore with a favorable current for example, or perhaps ensuring a shipwreck survivor is carried to safety by a dolphin.

Tenets of Faith

Alathea's faith revolves around making people's lives easier. In accordance with her reputation for answering pleas for help the goddess expects her followers and particularly her clergy to provide assistance when it is reasonable to do so. Her temples will still expect suitable donations for services rendered but will be more likely to grant difficult or out of the ordinary requests and will even settle for a lesser tribute if they can be convinced it is warranted.

Divine Goals & Aspirations

The Lady of the sea only has one true goal. Achieving complete supremacy over her nemesis, Zarinia. The enmity between the two is near legendary and all consuming for the both of them. Most of the time Alathea is content to simply work against her sister in her usual minor, subtle ways, foiling a plan here, derailing a plot there, or simply depriving Zarinia of her fun just for spite. Her most favored tactic is to steal away the souls of any who are about to die within the confines of her domain, especially if they are victims of her sister's whims and they specifically entreat her to do so. This behavior is a point of contention between the goddess and Petros, who demands all souls be delivered to him, but this rivalry is mitigated by the Land God's affinity for Alathea's aspect of renewal and healing. For her part, Alathea justifies this course of action as necessary because the souls would be usurped by Zarinia if she did not intervene.

Contrary to what many would expect, Alathea has never moved for all out war with her sister, in part because she cannot be certain of victory and also because she realizes what enormous upheaval that conflict would bring about on Fulkran. Despite that, a final showdown is all but unavoidable at some point and so the goddess is always on the lookout for some way to ensure a favorable outcome when the time comes.
