Naming Day - vyůmùl áùl

History

Naming day goes back to the time before The Below. Aulvi have always had the ability to choose their own names, since the first elves were created and Aeosh let them choose their names, to the first Aulvi born into the world. Parents only used nicknames until the children could pick their own names, but as this led to confusion, there was an eventual consensus (during the time in the below) that Aulvi should wait until their 100th birthday to choose their own name. This tradition has remained throughout the present day. Anadi also celebrate this tradition at a younger age (16) when they undergo the "Rite of the Storyteller," if they chosen to have an Aulvi be their chosen form.

Execution

This is a large party for an Aulvi, and is one of the major milestones in an Aulvi's life. At the beginning of the day, at dawn, the child is awakened to partake of their favorite foods, and all those around, in particular those closest to the child, (best friends and immediate family) share stories of their time with the child. This is an event that typically takes the whole day, and, upon the end of the final story, the child is given the ability choose their own name from the knowledge of their own history, their interests, and the whim of that moment. Afterwards, the child partakes of the Promegrate fruit (which is a new custom) to symbolize the Aulvi's first creation upon the surface, and connect that unique fruit with the child's unique life. (Also, the Promegrate fruit has odd properties the first time it consumed by an Aulvi with a combination of special herbs that are a secret mixture only known to a few select Aulven and anadi herbalists, and these are best maintained around those familiar with its effects.) After choosing a name, everyone there will repeat the name ten times as a group to help them remember the change, then celebrations continue.

Components and tools

The only specific item used it the Promegrate fruit, though many props and favored items of the child are often brought to show their interests, history, and growth. This event also usually incorporates a mawr̈ùlkhàùl, or a "horn crown" that has been crafted for this event specifically for the birthday child.

Participants

Everyone in the community is welcome, though few outside of an Aulven or Anadi really appreciate the custom fully.

Observance

The rites are observed after dawn throughout the day on the 100th birthday of an Aulvi (or the 16th birthday of an Anadi.)
