Crime and Justice

Low Crime Rates:

Voracia boasts significantly lower crime rates compared to Old Earth. The emphasis on community, The Stipend System, and the overall availability of resources means that crimes often associated with monetary needs, such as theft, robbery, and even violent acts like assault or murder, are rare.

Disappearances:

However, there are disturbing reports concerning disappearances, especially among the more vulnerable populations like the homeless and Humanity Purists. These cases, while not frequent, cast a shadow over Voracia's otherwise peaceful society.

Crime Detection through BSI:

The Brainstem Interface (BSI) plays a pivotal role in crime detection and deterrence. Since many people's visual and audible recordings can be accessed through their BSIs, capturing evidence becomes relatively straightforward. Criminals leave digital footprints, making them easier to track and apprehend, especially when the criminal has a BSI themself.

Punishment via BSI:

Once perpetrators are identified, the justice system doesn't resort to traditional incarceration. Instead, the culprit's BSI is adjusted. Features can be disabled, effectively restricting their access to certain digital privileges. Moreover, heavy monitoring is imposed, making every action traceable. The stipend they receive, which ensures a comfortable living, might be reduced, making daily life a bit more challenging but not impossible.

The Passive Resistance of Humanity Purists:

While most Humanity Purists resist high-technologies like BSI passively, choosing not to integrate with the larger digital society, there are factions that take their resistance a step further. These groups oppose the overarching influence of The Benefactors and view them as an invasive force that threatens genuine human experience.

Militant Resistance:

Within The Humanity Purists exists a faction that has adopted militant means to counter the Benefactors. These extremists view the Benefactors' control as tyrannical and seek to dismantle their influence by any means necessary. Their activities might include sabotage, propaganda distribution, and even acts of violence targeting key infrastructures, but they claim to be vehemently against violence toward the living citizens of Voracia.

Digital Dissidents:

A group of expert BSI users operates from the shadows, resisting the Benefactors' reach through digital channels. Skilled in hacking and digital subterfuge, they try to expose secrets, distribute counter-narratives, and challenge the status quo without revealing their identities. Their motives might vary, but their primary aim is to reduce the Benefactors' grip on Voracian society.   In summary, while Voracia has succeeded in building a society with minimal traditional crime, it isn't without its challenges. The societal shifts brought about by technology and the presence of the Benefactors have resulted in new forms of dissent and resistance, both in physical and digital realms. The landscape of crime and justice on Voracia is as much a reflection of its advancements as it is of its underlying tensions.
