The Caged Sea

Ecosystem Cycles

An inland sea for most of the year but for 4 months at the beginning of the warm seasons the tide rises and The Cage opens and fish flood in from the open ocean seeking shelter to breed, feeding on the nutrient-rich algae and brine shrimp that have been pupating since The Cage closed at the end of last season. The surrounding fishing towns take great advantage of this each year but ensure they leave enough fish to allow the population to return next season.

Localized Phenomena

The opening of The Cage. During the warm season, the tide rises several feet and cascades over the natural dam set between the open ocean and The Caged Sea. The dam is rebuilt each cycle by the debris from the active season, all of the dead plants and animals, fecal matter, and fresh material from the mountains. Local marsh farmers will cart away large quantities to fertilize their most important crops.
