Her presence in Verbobonc is not just a matter of lineage but a symbol of hope and progress.Origins of House Asbury
Founded in 438 CY after the liberation of Verbobonc from Keoish occupation, House Asbury began as a grant of land awarded to the ranger-knight Artimus Greensward. His band, the Flames of the Gnarley, disrupted enemy lines with cunning guerrilla tactics, and the Plar of Veluna rewarded him with land stretching from the Gnarley Forest to the Fens of Tor. Naming the manor after the verdant Asbury Meadows, Artimus and his wife, the Ehlonnan guide Yvonne Greensward, began a tradition of service to both land and forest. Over the generations, the men of House Asbury served among the Rangers of the Gnarley. But that line met a tragic end in 566 CY when Simon Greensward, Elinor’s uncle, perished defending Lady Kathryn Milinous from bandits. Without a male heir, governance fell to Lady Aluna Greensward, a Warden of Ehlonna, who married a young adventurer from Dyvers named Kyllan Treguard. He adopted the Asbury name, and their daughter Elinor was born shortly thereafter. The Tragedy of Whistler's Bridge (569 CY)
When the Temple of Elemental Evil’s forces surged through the southern Viscounty in 569 CY, Asbury Manor lay directly in their path. Kyllan and Aluna chose to make a final stand at Whistler’s Bridge, holding back the tide so the townsfolk and their infant daughter could flee. They fell alongside twelve brave retainers. Sir Armount, the seneschal and Kyllan’s dearest companion, bore young Elinor north to safety. The horde ransacked the manor, looting the family’s treasury, the ancestral Sword of the Gnarley Flame, and the luminous Gem of Asbury. For seven years the estate lay in ruin, the people scattered, until Elinor—just entering her teens—was brought back to the ruins by Armount to rebuild. The Girl Who Chose to Stay
Rather than send Elinor to court or temple, Armount insisted she remain with her people. She worked the fields beside the villeins, mended clothes, learned their stories, and listened as no noble had before. She learned diplomacy from the land itself—its silences, its needs, and its history. Tutored in the arts, letters, and politics by Armount and by traveling bards whom she sponsored, Elinor grew into a bard herself, known for both her haunting songs and eloquent negotiations. Viscount Wilfrick, recognizing her grace and growing reputation, appointed her as an Ambassador to Veluna, entrusting her to repair ties with the Celestial Circle and the Raoan clergy.Wounds of the Heart: Simon Milinous
Once betrothed to the ambitious Sir Simon Milinous, Elinor broke the engagement after his return from war revealed a cold and callous man. Simon, now a hardliner on the Council of Lords, attempted to use House Asbury’s war debts to force her hand in marriage. She rebuffed him publicly, deepening a rivalry that simmers within the halls of Verbobonc’s nobility.Current Status in 579 CY
Lady Elinor now rules a holding still struggling with debts and bandit incursions. She resides in a rebuilt Asbury Manor, its stone restored, its people returning. She wears her mother’s pendant—an empty chain where the Gem of Asbury once hung—and dreams of recovering the lost heirlooms stolen during the sacking. Elinor has posted a notice in Verbobonc seeking adventurers to recover her family’s relics and the treasury that could rescue her house from ruinVER1-01 Noble Ambitions.
