Dragonbone Crossing

Crafted from the skeletal remains of an ancient white dragon of colossal size, this bridge soars high over the Crystal River connecting Garrison to the Jawbone Hills. A relic of ancient Aloria, legends say it was commissioned by Emperor Reynor IV after he killed the dragon in an epic single combat which lasted an entire day.   Visitors to the city are often fearful of crossing the bridge because there are no piers supporting it as it arches one hundred feet over the river stretching for an incredible five hundred feet from end-to-end. It is clear that normal building methods cannot account for how the bridge was constructed and common sense would indicate that it should simply collapse from its own weight. The base of the structure is made from the backbone and tailbone of the dragon while the ribs were used to create the railings along the walkway. The walkway itself is made of the same black stone used often by the Alorians and appears as if it had been poured like liquid and then allowed to harden. The skull of the dragon creates an open arch on the Jawbone Hills side of the span giving those who cross the bridge to enter the city the feeling they are entering into the dragon's maw.   Mages that have studied the structure detect overwhelming levels of transmutation and enchantment magic and they theorize that there may be a permanent reverse gravity effect on the bridge. Other scoff at this idea as no one has been able to replicate the effect to prove the theory. Scholars of ancient Aloria believe that the secret to the bridge is in the strange, black, liquid-like stone that makes up the walkway. Alorians, they say, not only knew how to mold and craft the stone, but how to imbue it with magic-like properties. What is clear, is that the bridge is strong and has not decayed over the centuries.

Purpose / Function

This bridge connects the city of Garrison to the eastern shores of the Crystal River. It is used daily to transport ore and precious metals from the many mines scattered throughout the Jawbone Hills.

Alterations

Over the centuries, there have been many modifications to the bridge. In 1589 AF, bugbears led by two stone giant twin brothers attacked the bridge in an effort to sack the city of Garrison. The rampaging forces were about to break the defenders and storm across the bridge when the archmage Tolendar cast a cone of cold spell that appeared to come from the mouth of the long-dead dragon. The blast killed the giants and frightened the bugbears who fled back into the hills. To commemorate the victory, the stone giant skulls were preserved and are now mounted on the Garrison side of the bridge atop two stone pedestals which are inscribed with the names of those that died in the battle.   More recently in 2502 AF, paladins of the Shining Circle commissioned the creation of a huge banner to honor the goddess Dalana their patron. It is a flowing red banner emblazoned with a golden circle of light with a sword within, the symbol of their order. Every year, a new banner is constructed and hung from the bridge to honor Dalana the patron of Garrison.
