Shades (ʃeɪdz)
Keepers of the shadows. The ears of the dark.
Down in the toxic battleground of Fernal, the Shades stand tall as one of the ancient demon races. Quiet and craft, the abilities of these creatures to hide in and manipulate shadows makes them incredible assassins and informants. Living in the higher cliffs at the edge of the Cataclysma, Shades are the only known demon race to possess the ability to fly as the celestials do. With wings that resemble that of the ravens they keep as familiars, these demons are terrors of the skies of Fernal.
Shades are one of the few demons that are completely unable to cast traditional magic. Instead, they use their bodies and souls to manipulate the darkness around them into objects, weapons, and incredible feats of power.
Shade Features
- Ability Score Increase. Your Dexterity score increases by 2. Your Strength score decreases by 1.
- Age. Shades have similar age cycles as the Celestials, reaching physical maturity around one millennium and intellectual maturity in around one century.
- Alignment. Living as the dark and ancient assassins, shades are often neutral or evil.
- Size. Shades are, on average, one to two feet taller than humans and with much more stretched proportions.
- Speed. Your walking speed is 30. Your flying speed is 30.
- Darkvision. Living among the darkness, shades can perceive for up to 80 feet in non-magical darkness.
- Languages. Shades can speak Infernal and Common.
- Shadow Sneak. You can become one with shadows. In dim light or darkness, you gain advantage on stealth rolls.
- Shade Feature. Even though you are unable to cast traditional magic, you gain the shade features from the features chart, although you can only use one daily.

Appearance
Body Tint/Coloration
- Skin. Shades often have monochromatic skin colors, usually much darker grays and blacks. Sometimes tints of purple or blue occur.
- Hair. Shades have hair colors in monochromatic colors, along with desturated forms of blue, purple, and brown.
- Eyes. Born of the darkness, shades have black schleras and irises with luminescent pupils in all possible colors.
Physique
Shades are extremely elongated creatures, mimicking the appearance of the shadows they control. Their limbs are longer than average, making them much spindlier. This makes shades fast, but they are physicallyweaker than some of the other demons that share their underworld home.Additional Information
Social Structure
Shades live in a monarchal-based structure, with one king and his three sons. There are few nobleman that get the ear of the king, and very few of his people ever see him. Instead, he uses his sons Zero, Ether, and Finch in order to carry his words and orders. Because of the reclusiveness of the king and the lack of information on the underworld species, his name is unknown to most people.
