Lradgate

The Shade Capital

A connecting network of caves and cliffs at the base of the Cataclysma exit, the city of Lradgate is home to the Shades. Comprised mostly of black glass and natural geographical features, it has some of the most varied shapes and structures of all of the settlements in Fernal.

Demographics

The main capital of Lradgate is inhabited mostly by wealthy Shades and their servants. While some Ionids visit infrequently to study the local wildlife and status of the Cataclysma, its rare for any of them to become permanent inhabitants of the city.

Government

While the city and surrounding villages are ruled by The Shade King, the king's sons also rule parts of the territory as nobles, with the oldest son, Zero, being in charge of the outskirts of the city of Lradgate. While the King and his sons have a final say in all proceedings that occur within their territory, there is also a council of seven lesser nobles that will vote and help inform decisions.

Defences

Being built primarily on cliff faces and at high elevations, the city's primary defense is its geographical and strategic placement. Being surrounded by only sparse trees and rolling plains of rock and dirt, there is very little cover for armies to approach the city unnoticed. With the Shade's ability to fly, the quick mobilization and movement of armies in response to attack ensures that the city is not suddenly ambushed.

Districts

The main city of Lradgate is separated into two levels, one upper and one lower. The lower levels primarily make use of the pre-existing geography of the region, taking advantage of the interconnected cave networks to make sprawling underground communities. This district is run mostly by the Dark Prince, Zero, with advisement from his father when needed. The lower levels are home to the common Shade families and also most of the taverns that accept travelers into the city. While Dwarves and Ionids are somewhat regular visitors to the city, large amounts of outsiders are uncommon. Currently, there are only two taverns that work for housing outside guests.   The upper levels are built primarily on the tops of cliffs and have much larger aboveground facilities. The Upper District is inhabited mostly by the wealthier and more well-established Shade families. The Shade families that have special honors in either military service or technological achievements are the ones that are stationed the closest to the King's dwelling in the more luxurious housing locations. These locations can contain miniature waterfalls and special, exclusive views on cliff faces that are inaccessible to those in the Lower District. Without special permission, the inhabitants from the Lower District are not allowed into the Upper District.

Architecture

While the Lower District primarily uses the pre-established geographical structures in order to build its city, the district is also known to employ traces of dark gray stone and brickwork, along with windows of stained glass that function as a needed pop of color in the mostly monochromatic city. Within the underground communities, most of the building interiors employ the bare stone of the cave structures for the walls and smooth wooden boards that make up the floors of the buildings.   In the Upper District, the buildings are made primarily of black glass made from the sands in Fernal, and also contain small traces of gray stone and brickwork for structural support and foundations. While the buildings themselves are mostly monochromatic, the wealthier Shades enjoy decorating with bioluminescent crystals that glow in shades of yellow, orange, and blue to light up the cities and provide needed decor.
