Humans (hyoo-muhns)

People of the Edge. Fighters Against the Swamps.

https://www.dndbeyond.com/races/human
Living in the highly protective walls of Gemwood, humans are one of the most often overlooked species. Without many large talents or special characteristics, the only thing that makes humans a threat is their combined forces and ability to quickly learn magical practices. Located just at the border of the Faelands and the sprawling pines of the Murkmire, the humans are tasked with the grave responsibility of keeping the Murkmire at bay. But, no matter how hard they fight in resistance, the Murkmire's trees and swamps continue to spread, growing around Gemwood. It is estimated that in the next 50 years, Gemwood will be completely taken over by the Murkmire and humans will be left to rot with it.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Most humans that live on Ustremmel live within the heavily protected walls of Gemwood. While Gemwood does have a ruling noble house, they are little more than a puppet ruler. Celestials have occupied Gemwood for more than 80 years and are responsible for most decisions made for the city.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Out of all the species on Ustremmel, the humans have the highest geographical distribution. Due to their ability to adapt to nearly any environment, humans can be found to persevere all the way from the southern marshes to the northern deserts, living on all mountains in-between.

Civilization and Culture

Beauty Ideals

Due to the lack of food caused by the slow poisoning of crops by the Murkmire, most of the humans in the Gemwood and surrounding villages idealize a more plump figure for both men and women. This shows a level of health much more preferable to the starvation seen in less well-off sections of the human population.

Gender Ideals

Of all of the races in Ustremmel, humans (on average) have the most rigid gender norms and gender ideals. Due to their short life spans and constant fight against the stronger races, gender norms and reproduction play a much greater part in human lives. Women are usually carers of children and the men typically fight in the numerous battles against the monstrous forces of the Murkmire. However, as the population of humans continues to dwindle, this stereotype is beginning to change. More women are charging into battles, alongside their husbands and wives as the war wages on.
