Jaroka qala-Kandra

Jaroka qala-Kandra, also known as the black or veiled queen, is the current acting queen of Kandairad and spouse of Sangrin qal-Kandra. She is considered by many of her subjects to be somewhat unhinged, but her status, theatrical displays of power, and dominion over the Kandaran police have kept her political opponents in the shadows. Her hatred for mages is fanatical, and uses scripture of the local Telet faith as justification for her genocidal tendencies. She also claims that a cabal of mages lead by the Fire Witch was responsible for the hit on her husband. Similarly, the mages which attempted to heal her husband soon after the attempt on his life were accused of murder and treason. Ever since then she has invoked emergency legislation and dismissed her husband's council.

Funeral Marches

Every morning at dawn she leads a funeral march from the temple to the palace through the gardens, circling the temple ward. She has order the brass bells of the temple of the Flamedawn to ring throughout her entire march, during which every resident in the city is commanded to mourn her husband. She dresses in a lighter imitation of the funeral attire of her homeland; black pelts and veil, which has earned her the nicknames the "Black Queen" or the "Veiled Queen". Despite this, she is prone to condemn any who speak of her husband being unable to recover to death.

Friends in High Places

Jaroka is well regarded by the white guard, as she has increased their power throughout the city. Given Kandairad's reputation for order and strength, this has lent her a decent amount of respect throughout other circles. She is also supported by the fundamentalist sect of the Telet religion known as the true children of the flame "Iqara-haqi al marr", who likewise have a strong distaste for mages. Since the attack on her husband and thus the beginning of her regency, support for the children has grown greatly, as has anti-mage sentiments. She also seems to be popular among the merchants importing food from the north, on whom the city is required to rely far more now that asaeically enhanced crop growth and summoned food is no longer available.

Daughter of the West

While propaganda would claim otherwise, Jaroka's union to Sangrin was primarily a political one, in order to stave off conflict between the forces of Kandairad and its satellite city-states and the kingdom of Halbrenn to the west. Jaroka is the daughter of a Kandaran noble by the name of Iman qel-Feher, who had married into the extended royal line of Halbrenn. This allowed the royal lines to commit to a political union without the Kandra line marrying entirely out Kandaran nobility. This union has lead to the Treaty of Jira, which has avoided open war for 8 (5 diegetic) years.

Appearance

Given her mixed blood, the queen is a little paler than the average Kandaran, though not enough for it to be apparent. She is beautiful, or is at least considered so by a large part of the Kandaran population. Her hair is a dark, near black, brown with soft waves. Unblemished skin and red lips, yet a clear jaw. Shapely nose, and large eyes with a piercing look.
