Malaise' the Fruitful (Ma-lay-z)

Malaise was a human wizard from Belle Torpor. He was reportedly a voracious reader, a recluse, and an overall unfriendly person. He was thought to spend much of his time at the Binding Field, and witnesses testified that he would often hover at a specific set of graves. Twenty years ago, the aristocracy put Malaise to death for practicing dark magic. During the trial, those witnesses which watched him in the mass grave at Binding Field testified against him, as well as many others who knew him from Belle Torpor which thought ill of him from his negative reputation. The few which testified in Malaise' favor came from far away, from the Rimeberry vineyard, to share the accused's other reputation as Malaise the Fruitful. He was given this name because, the vintners testified, he single-handedly saved their business from failing by resurrecting their grapes. This was a powerful character witness, and the sorcerer insisted that he was innocent until the end but he was found guilty nevertheless. Upon the pyre, Malaise laid a vengeful curse upon the land. After he burned, Malaise' Wall shot up around the country of Torpor. Many of the citizens soon succumbed too starvation and the elements. Then, when things seemed like they couldn’t get any worse, a Plague of Monsters began to harass the land as, killing many more and further stagnating the economy, as people became afraid to travel. The name of Malaise is now universally reviled. Many believe that the plagues are a final proof that Malaise was guilty of dark magic and deserved to die. Others think Malaise was probably innocent, but that the vengeance he brought down upon Torpor was not deserved.
