Gnom Far

Demographics

The city of Gnom Far is primary composed of Gnomes, with a few surface-dwelling dwarves as well. Other species live there as well, but as a tiny minority compared to the Gnomes and Dwarves.

Government

The city government of Gnom Far is directly ruled over by the Patriarch of Clan Gnommadar, Tanhim Tamyr. Each of the wards of the city is ruled over by a burgher council made up of members of the major guilds in those wards.

Defences

Thick Dwarven-designed walls encircle the main city, with only three entrances accessible from the shore, each a series of bridges and drawbridges secured by multiple gatehouses. The canals of the city flow directly into the lake, although these gaps can be sealed in the case of a siege. Each ward is built as a self-contained fortress, which each one entirely encircled by walls and drawbridges. Major Citadel Wards secure the main route to the Spire of Tamyr, and divide the city into four uneven portions.

Industry & Trade

Gnom Far is the site of major artificer activity. If an odd invention or gizmo exits, it exists in Gnom Far. The main exports of Gnom Far are these sorts of inventions, alchemical potions, and the like. Imports include food and wood from the surrounding countryside.

Infrastructure

Gnom Far is a canal city build out onto the surface of Lake Gnomar. Flying bridges cross between each raised Ward, but a great deal of transit happens along the canals, especially the movement of freight. The major roads are predominantly reserved for pedestrian and occasional military use.

Guilds and Factions

The most dominant factions within the city are that of the Alchemical Union and the Artificers guild, two inventive societies that have an ongoing rivalry punctuated by elaborate "practical jokes" (some with particularly dangerous consequences.) Other guilds also exert influence, but nothing on the scale of those two great Trade Unions.

History

Gnom Far was established in the Gnommish Vale by a group of freed Gnomes lead by Jackerel Tamyr in 342 YE. The city continued to grow as clan after clan abolished Gnommish servitude until the practice was wiped out and the Slaver Clan was cast out of the Dwarkun Empire in 762 YE. When clan Gnommadar was established to replace the slavers in 763, Gnom Far was by far the only suitable choice for its Clanhold.

Architecture

Although the skeleton of the city is of a mostly Dwarvish style, buildings inside the city and the adornments of the battlements reflect a Gnommish sensibility, with odd, jutting angles almost unsteady-looking structures that shockingly are able to stay standing.

Geography

Gnom Far is built over a shallow portion of Lake Gnomar in the Gnommish Vale. It is immediately surrounded by a chaotically-constructed outer village and a multitude of farms. Pine Isle is visible a few miles away across the lake, and the mountains that bound the vale loom large and dark, continuing to assist Gnommish storytellers in frightening young Gnomes with tales of the old days of the slavers.

Natural Resources

Although the main worth of Gnom Far lies in its inventive industries, fish from the surrounding waters and food from surrounding farms fill a substantial portion of its needs.
