Tachyon Obliteration Cannon
The Tachyon Obliteration Cannon is an immense particle cannon with a 3 km long ship built around it as used by the Hyperion Federation. However, they are extremely expensive to build as they require Hypermatter to build. The technology used to stabilize tachyons requires hypermatter to operate, but only requires hypermatter as a catalyst so can re-use the same hypermatter particle many times. These are made in massive particle colliders around entire planets, so due to this price they are used only in very desperate situations such as the first cross-fracture war.
Tachyons are exotic particles with imaginary (the square root of a negative number) mass. They always travel at superluminal velocities (faster than the speed of light) and, oddly, gain velocity as they lose energy. Tachyons do not exist anymore but it is possible, albeit extremely difficult, to create and weaponise them. Due to their superluminal velocity they can hit targets through black holes.
Even though there are very few of them, they are a force to be reckoned with.
The Hyperion Ethics Committee has placed a somewhat light restriction on this technology due to its ability to end a massive number of lives on a single target starship - including larger warships. The committee has completely banned its use against worldships. Despite this, the military still uses and relies on them, though they take the ethics committees restrictions into account to prevent potential devastating civil war. The technology used to create and stabilize tachyons are one of the most classified technologies of the HF, despite being in use. If the enemies of the HF can obtain blueprints of it, it is likely to be devastating to them.
The first versions of the Tachyon Cannon were far less powerful but still used in the Tebburus Unification War, where they were intended. These types of weapons had an effective range much shorter than that of modern Tachyon Cannons due to less advanced stabilization technology, causing any tachyons fired to decay much sooner. Its effective range meant tha tthese types of weapons could hit a target in high orbit around Tebburus before its beam got too weak to have any significant impact. However, they are also much more compact and able to fit on a large, land based vehicle. The smallest tachyon cannons on Tebburus had a length of about 10 meters and caliber of about 1 meter, therefore the weight of these machines was still very heavy.
Also, the Tachyon Phase Cannon is a much more compact and powerful version than the modern tachyon cannon, but is an Ω Extreme-Energy Technology which restricts its use purely to the Singularity - Class Experimental Prototype Super Battleship or starships that are of a similar technology and energy level. Tachyon cannons rely on Tachyonic Radar technology to track an enemy from superluminal velocity in order to exploit that advantage. Otherwise, a spotter may also be used, but that might be more easily detectable by the enemy. As such, Tachyon Cannons typically have a long range tachyon radar but most of its energy is used by the weapon so in most cases it would require escorting ships equipped with them or spotters. The spotter usually comes in the form of a 'Vector' Reconnaissance Drone (or a frontline ship if the line requires tachyon cannon strikes) or one variant thereof.
