Green VIII

A large, mostly remote planet of the Green System.

Green VIII is almost entirely unused for any purpose due to its relative lack of useful resources (it is mostly ice), despite its solid surface, and due to the dangerous radiation that penetrates the atmosphere which makes it difficult to survive on, even for species like Trevans who are naturally adapted to withstand radiation sources. Its atmosphere also has a fairly toxic composition as well. As such, anyone who goes to its surface would need to bring a large amount of protection to remain alive. There are also occasional snowstorms. Due to its massive distance from the local sun, it is extremely cold.

Like all Green system worlds, Green VIII has its own exotic sources of green light. Odd, small spheres emitting green light occasionally appear out of nowhere to illuminate a small area with green light before vanishing as quickly as they appear. Scientists would have more interest in this phenomenon, but there are more interesting things to study in the Green system, and Green VIII is dangerous.

Much of the planet was scanned from orbit several times. The Hyperion Federation has determined that the core is entirely frozen over and as such very few events happen on the planet other than the green light orbs appearing occasionally. These can contribute some warmth to the planet, but are practically negligible in most cases. While caves exist, they are rare and small due to the higher gravity of this planet causing them to collapse quite easily. There is little to no water flow on the planet either, so few forces even attempt to form caves. Those that do form are subject to study as well, as this effect is poorly understood. It is thought that it has something to do with the green orbs; perhaps sometimes they are bright enough to melt a large amount of ice which will flow and form caves. This has not been observed, and is merely a theory.

Despite not being a gas or ice giant, Green VIII is one of the largest planets in the system and features a very strong gravitational field. As it mostly lacks a magnetosphere, this is probably how it retains most of its atmosphere. The very high gravity makes it difficult to mine on, and reach space with conventional means.

This planet has also captured several moons, several of which have a similar rock composition as the planet. It is thought that this is because another planetoid crashed into Green VIII at some time long ago in the past. Parts of the planet itself were knocked into orbit around the planet, becoming several different moons. All of the other moons were captured by the planet though, initially being rogue worlds.

Despite all, there is a small HF presence on Green VIII. There are underground top secret facilities, a number of ancient structures to study and the world is used for several applications which are only possible under very cold conditions, and possibly high radiation. When more of the Green system reveals its secrets, it is planned that many of those science teams will be sent to Green VIII to study this planet, with much care to protect their safety.
