Hobgoblin
Ervenian Era, 1051 AB
Hobgoblins are goblinkin who are considered to be the larger, stronger, smarter, and more menacing form of goblins. Though they are physically weaker than bugbears, they are smarter and better organized. Among goblinoids, hobgoblins usually take up leadership roles.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Hobgoblins resemble large, muscled humans with red-brown or gray skin and red or orange faces. Hobgoblin eyes are dark brown or yellowish, and their teeth are sharp and yellow. They are lean and tall, averaging six and a half feet in height and weighing around 200 pounds; their muscles are designed more for agility than brute strength. Many hobgoblins sport tattoos or stylized scars; some tribes have scars gouged and burnt into their flesh, meant to display their tolerance for pain rather than for art's sake.
Civilization and Culture
Interspecies Relations and Assumptions
To hobgoblins, other goblinoids exist to serve them, and other races exist only to be conquered. They universally despise elves, and by extension magic, especially arcane. Most hobgoblin tribes don't trade with outsiders, preferring to pillage what they want or need; some tribes even refuse to trade with other hobgoblin communities.
In mixed groups, hobgoblin officers often lead units of goblins or orcs whom they bully and abuse, either due to their perceived superiority or simply out of cruelty. Hobgoblin mercenaries may offer their services to powerful and wealthy members of other races, with some forming mercenary companies.
Hobgoblins are adept at uniting fragmented goblin tribes under their command. Powerful creatures such as bugbears, ogres , and trolls may occasionally assume leadership positions in a hobgoblin tribe, but normally act as front line muscle. Barghests who join hobgoblin tribes usually become leaders, integrating seamlessly into their culture. Barghest chieftains often sponsor blackguards among their hobgoblin minions, who are then ready to take over the tribe when the barghest returns to its home plane.
