Sunless yet luminous, the water glows in soft aquamarine, deepening to bottle-green around silt clouds and brightening to turquoise where steam vents hiss. Currents are the roads and weather both: glassy rivers slide through warmer seas, whirlpools open like irises to other elements, and tidal bores slam the unwary through meadows of eelgrass. Swim toward cold and you graze icebergs that never melt; angle toward brine and the taste turns knife-sharp until salt deserts glare white; turn toward slime and the water thickens with ooze; drift into hissing warmth and bubbles crown your brow. Cities bloom on reef-spires and inside bubble-hulls, and great pelagic beasts pass like thunderstorms, pursued by hunters who read the sea’s many scripts—ripple, taste, temperature, and the distant thrum of leviathan song.
