The Ashernai Mage Academy

Ashernai

Ashernai is the most famous of all schools of magic. They produce both world-renowned scholars, as well as powerful warriors, but they are most famous for their control and study of the Terhikai Gate, around which their grand halls were built.

Location

Ashernai is located in the isle of Udamna, the largest of the southern islands of Westingham, not far from the province's capital city.
Its location has brought wealth and prestige to the island's inhabitants, and have since only served to increase their power and influence in the world, even after being subjugated by continental kings.
The academy is built in the slopes of the Udamna mountain, a dormant volcano that is said to have once been home to a large community of dragons, before the volcano went cold.

The road from Udamna city on the coast to the academy is well paved and maintained, thus making the trip rather easy, lasting only about a day.

Terhikai Gate

Their position around the Terhikai was intentional, because this powerful source of magical energy has always intrigued people, especially the world mages and scholars.
It is studied by highly skilled students and the masters of the school.

Entrance

Getting into the academy is not hard, all one has to do is prove their ability to do magic, and present the minimal tuition fee.
Getting in might be easy, at least as long as there are spaces available, but staying is not nearly as simple.
Masters use the first year to determine students' aptitude and willingness to work hard, and those who are deemed too lazy or unmotivated to continue, are expelled after their first year.

Those that stay will get the oppertunity to learn from the best, and read from the largest and most detailed library in the world, where the knowledge of the ages is kept safe.

Teachers

Teaching at the academy is a prestigious possition, and all who wish to become masters must prove master level skill and knowledge of their primary magical element, as well as at least one other of the schools main subjects. If an aspiring teacher proves inadequate, they are denied entry.
This selective process is designed to make sure that the high quality of education that the academy i so famous for, stays up to par.

Classes

There are many basic classes that are tought, but teachers are allowed to use any free time to teach pretty much whatever they want. At the beginning of the year, all teachers advertise their classes to new students, in hopes of filling their classes.

Primary Subjects

The Primary Subjects are always tought, and all masters are expected to teach at least a basic class of their primary element. There are also other classes, which are always tought, and spots teaching these are divided among available masters. Usually there are volunteers to teach classes they specialize in, but when there arent ebnough volunteers, these classes are appointed.
Masters are allowed to trade appointed classes if they wish.

Basic Elemental classes are about teaching students how to use their primary elements. These are among the most popular classes, and usually last three years in total.
Ancient Runes is very self explanitory, these classes are about teachig students about runes, and making sure that what knowledge has been collected and maintained by the school, doesnt go to waste.
Ancient runes is devided into three stages, each lasting two years. Basic, and Advanced classes are about teaching existing knowledge, but the third and final level is about teaching study and runic innovation, and are meant to turn students into true runic scholars.
Thaumaturgy classes teach basic thaumaturgy tp students. This being a type of dark magic, these classes focus on teaching safety and caution, as well as focusing on the beneficial and good uses of this type of magic.
Thaumaturgy is only taught on a basic level as a primary subject, but masters are free to teach more advanced and indepth levels if they wish, as long as they indulge the darker sides too much.
Demonology is another type of dark magic, but knowledge of demons is nevertheless valued and studied at the academy. The goal is to get people to indulge their curiosity safely and responsibly.
This class is a primary subject for two levels, teaching students basic and advanced levels of this magic.
Dark Magic classes are meant to inform and advise students on the dark magics as a whole, this class lasts only two years, and doesnt have any advanced levels.
Combat Magic classes are meant to teach students how to effectively use magic in combat. Only the basic level is a primary subject, and lasts two years.

Infusion classes are a primary cornerstone of Ashernai education, teaching the valuable art of infusion.

Common Subjects

Besides primary subjects, there are also common subjects. These are not required to be taught, but are popular, and therefore, there are many teachers who choose to teach them.

Advanced Elemental classes are meant to teach students how to use their primary and other elements with maximum efficiency. These classes are mixed and don't focus on individual elemental properties as much as they focus on mana usage, control, and understanding magic.
Experimental Demonology is taught commonly. These classes are meant to turn students into true creative thinging demonological scholars.
Advanced Combat Magic classes are very popular and are generally taught for specific primary elements.
Advanced Restoration classes expand upon basic healing knowledge.
Applied Magics classes are designed to teach students how to effectively use magic in everyday situations, These classes are especially popular among mages from humble origins. This class generally has an advanced counterpart, and lengths vary between two and three years each.
Necromancy classes are also taught, even though not nearly as popular as many others. They largely focus on the soul research and healing aspects of this type of magic, as well as teaching caution and restraint when it comes to the other aspects of necromancy.

Tuition

There is a basic attendance fee, which is meant to pay for the room and provided food, but the main way the school makes money is with class tuition. Tuition i payed per class on an anual basis, primary subjects have set fees, but for other subjects, masters can charge whatever they want. The school itself takes 10% of all class tuition. This money is the way masters contribute to the school, and it is used for maintenance and other school expenses. The school board is made up of senior masters. They are in charge of managing these finances and overseeing the entrance of both students and master's.
These board members are paid a modest salary from the contribution money, on top of their class tuition earnings.

Scholarship

Attendance costs money, and only nobles and other wealthy classes of society have to funds to pay for their stay by themselves. These individuals only make up a small part of all magically capable people, though, and at some point, some nobles saw an opportunity there, which has since spread across westingham and beyond.

The scholarship system has nobles using employed mages to seek out individuals with magical potential from among the lower classes of society, and offer them a deal.
In the scholarship deal, the noble pays for all the mage's tuition and attendance fees, and in return, they are obligated to work for the noble for a time after they finish, usually twice the amount of time they were studying. They are at that point in paid service, since this would otherwise be considered debt slavery, which is banned in most of the Western world.
After this obligatory service is up, the mage is then free to do what they want. If they did well during their time serving their patron noble, they are offered a new service contract, often getting paid much more than before.

This scholarship system is most common in westingham and Isich, but is also practiced in other nations.
