Etellen

Etellen is a major trading town in South Aederace. Originally a medium sized fishing hotspot, this town became the first point of contact for most vessels from Tal Landra and Hurg'Til'Toh.   Etellen's proximity to Tal Landra and Hurg'til'toh (relative to other ports) makes it a convenient choice for intercontinental travelers and traders, and Etellen's access to local sources of grain, seafood, livestock, minerals, metals, and cash crops make it an exclusive and exceptionally wealthy location. Etellen's ruling class demands high taxes to those who reside in the city, which results in high costs being passed to customers in almost every industry.

Demographics

Etellen is primarily human (78%) and elven (10%). The remainder of the population is a combination of local Aederean species (Kjöllar, Coralfolk, etc.), and visitors from across the seas, particularly Solash from Tal Landran trading organisations.

Government

Etellen is ultimately ruled by the Lord, but minor matters and policies are attended to by the Lord's Lolem. The Lolem are a group of studious and wise diplomats, and are usually selected from the blood relations of the Lord.

Infrastructure

Etellen grew quickly, and as such is missing many of its most important amenities. The rapid construction of sewers, roads, guardhouses, and other public services has resulted in a particularly excessive level of property tax, which has driven many of the original inhabiting families of Etellen into Out-Town.

Districts

Etellen is divided into 6 main districts.
  • District of Order

Here is where the Lord's own residence exists, neighbored by the main guard house, the highest courthouse, and the residences and chambers of the Lord's Lolem.

  • District of Business

The majority of merchants and storefronts in Etellen exist here. This district is also where the majority of the guard patrols are placed. This district mostly surrounds the District of Order, like a crescent moon.

  • District of Homes

The District of Homes is where the majority of houses, apartments, and other residences are located. Many inns, taverns, and food outlets operate here also.

    • Heights Quarter

The Heights Quarter is the unofficial name of the part of the District of Homes where the most wealthy and influential construct their homes and faculties, separate and apart from the areas in which the middle and lower classes reside.

  • District of Wharfs

Ships, boats, and other trading vessels are docked here for the transfer, loading, unloading, and sale of goods. This District is where ships are meant to be constructed also, but the timber near Etellen is unsuitable for this process and it is cheaper to buy ships from other locales. Many of the lower classes and less fortunate of Etellen reside here where it is much easier to avoid guard patrols amidst the chaos of the constant trade. Ship Inspectors are the first to greet any vessel that arrives in this District.

  • District of Lights

The parts of the District of Lights that are complete are some of the most well-kept and well-maintained parts of Etellen. It is here that temples have been constructed, meeting places erected, and large performance arenas are under construction. Many of the facilities here are under rapid construction and have not been finished: it is a busy hub of builders and architects, but also of worshippers and celebrants conducting regular rituals and ceremonies. The temple to the Familiean is the most well-kept building here.

  • District of Grasses

The District of Grasses is composed of two parts: one a recreational space of imported grass for families and residents to enjoy, and part graveyard and sacred burial ground. The burial grounds are surrounded with medium height brick walls to prevent gravedigging and necromancy.
