The betrayal of Lord Tarrell, ruler of Port Carrow, by merchants in the employ of Lord Olswyth Aerell, marks the end of hostilities in the War of Unification.
Ever since the start of the War of Brilonian Unification, the merchants of Port Carrow had been following developments eagerly. The importance of trade to the Carronian economy made them powerful, but still subject to the whims, and more importantly the taxes, of Lord Tarrell. They saw the war as a chance to take their rightful place in Port Carrow. Lord Olswyth knew that he could not lay siege to the city - it was too well-supplied by ships from abroad, and its walls were unassailable. He turned to the resentful merchant class of the city, and to a merchantwoman named Aelda Gray. She offered to bribe guards at the city's eastern gatehouse to raise the gates at midnight for a group of soldiers sent by Lord Olswyth. In return she wanted power in the city after Olswyth was crowned king. Lord Tarrell found himself woken in the middle of the night with a knife at his throat. He and his family were murdered, and by the next morning, Lord Olswyth was sitting in his throne in the city's central keep. It was this event that lead to the founding of the Merchant's Guild of Port Carrow.
