Merchant's Guild of Port Carrow

The Merchant's Guild was founded in Port Carrow by Aelda Graye in Third Age 7. It is responsible for the regulation of trade in the region, and effectively controls the city. While many oppose the Guild's often brutal rule of the city, it has been responsible for the growth of wealth in the city throughout the Third Age, and has made Port Carrow the richest city in the world.

Structure

The leader of the Guild is known as the Grand Master. The Grand Master is, by convention, also the City Lord of Port Carrow, and it is from this link that the Guild gets so much of its power. Three Masters are appointed by the Grand Master to carry out duties within the Guild.   The Master of Requisitions is responsible for procuring supplies used by the Guild, such as weapons used by Enforcers, or supplies for travels across the sea.   The Master of Trade is responsible for monitoring trade in the city, and identifying any potential issues, so that the economy of the city remains healthy.   The Master of Law is responsible for the enforcement of Guild law, and the issuing (and sometimes revocation) of trading permits.   Within the Guild also are Enforcers and Inquisitors. Inquisitors are responsible for investigating possible Guild crimes within the region of Port Carrow, such as smuggling. They are often given free reign to use Guild resources as they see fit. Enforcers are responsible for ensuring that Guild crimes are properly punished. This may mean ensuring that a merchant does not attempt to fraudulently use his revoked permit, or ensuring that a group of smugglers are properly 'disbanded'. Many are horrified by the actions of Guild Enforcers, but are often powerless to stop them.

Public Agenda

The Guild aims to enrich the city of Port Carrow through the administration of trade in the region, to ensure that any business dealings happening within the region are to the benefit of the city.

History

The Merchant's Guild was formed in Third Age 7 after the Night of Blood and Gold, in which the ruling family of Port Carrow was betrayed by Aelda Graye, a merchant in the service of the newly crowned Olswyth Aerell. Since it's founding, the Merchant's Guild has been fiercely loyal to the House of Aerell, with Guild mercenaries coming to the aid of both Queen Aeli and Prince Regent Tharn during the First and Second Eastern Rebellions.   After the fall of the House of Aerell, the Guild became more isolationist, refusing to take part in the Brilonian Civil War. It grew in size and power, with its representatives expanding across the globe, and the Guild is now a major influence in the politics of the Three Cities.
