Turkey Twigs

A versatile favorite around Willowmoor, turkey twigs are just herb-roasted turkey meat skewered over wooden sticks.

History

Before Willowmoor was even built, turkey twigs became a traveling staple as the future villagers fled the safety of the arena they had been staying in after bombs destroyed much of the world. The first part of their journey north brought them through mountains and valleys where wild turkey were rampant. The meat would be rubbed with whatever herbs and spices were handy, then skewered on sticks and passed around for easy roasting over the fire.

As the caravan arrived on the stretch of land where they inevitably built the village of Willowmoor, the dish would remain a popular favorite around households throughout all seasons, many homes developing their own personal family recipes to pass down. As years and, inevitably, decades go by, the dish evolves into variations featuring vegetables or mushrooms, as well as alternatives such as deep-fried turkey twigs or one of the "healthy" varieties that are still being brainstormed to this day. Less handheld versions are also popular these days, such as turkey twigs spread over rice and smothered in tasty sauce.

Significance

Turkey twigs come to have a particular importance among the children of Willowmoor, from the first generation that traveled in the caravan, to later generations who only know the food as a delicious rite of passage toward being one of the "big kids". This is because you only get to enjoy your very own for yourself when your parents believe you're old enough to hold the stick without dropping it.

For those who were children in the caravan that invented the handheld meal (the generation known as Torchies), turkey twigs became rife with nostalgia, the kids growing into teens and young adults who yearned to have cookouts that recalled the scents of their youth. Perhaps, it was that generation's nostalgia that ensured the continued existence of the Willowmoor snack and its silly name.
