Battle of New Bonneville
A violent altercation that occurred between the citizens of New Bonneville and the traveling caravan community that would become Willowmoor.
The Conflict
Prelude
In the lead-up to the battle, only New Bonneville knew it was going to happen originally. They were prepared to subdue anyone who passed through their city, and doing so by violent means was their favorite way. From the moment they captured the scouts that came through ahead of the caravan, they knew they would be attacking that community, too.
What they didn't count on was that the caravan would fight back after they had already been "subdued"; so, for the second round of battle, it was New Bonneville that was caught unawares.
Battlefield
The battle took place in the town limits of New Bonneville as the caravan was attempting to pass through on their search for a place to settle. Initially, this helped New Bonneville since they were on their home turf. Later, though, the caravan community used the bombed-out city against them, rigging up explosives to demolish some of the buildings that were still standing, killing hundreds of the militia men of New Bonneville in the process.
Conditions
The primary condition that led to this battle was the destruction of the known modern world. This propelled the caravan community on their northward march to find a place to put down roots, and it's what granted control over the bombed-out settlement to a militia that wanted to fight. Furthermore, if the travelers had not been running low on food and medical supplies, they might not have risked going through a large city at all - no matter how destroyed it appeared.
Outcome
The New Bonneville militia was crippled since they lost their leader and dozens of members. The buildings that were toppled also prevented them from pursuing the caravan, though it might have been difficult for them to do that anyway with their own losses.
The community that made up the caravan came out victorious despite their great loss of life because those who survived got away.
Aftermath
The long-term effects for the caravan were large: they lost half their number - including many leaders - but at least they picked up a hoard of weapons. This was also the inciting event that propelled Adam to a position of unmatched respect.
For New Bonneville, the grudge they developed against their escaped captives would become their most long-lasting effect.
Historical Significance
Legacy
The Battle of New Bonneville leaves a lasting mark on the citizenry of Willowmoor - the caravan community that encroached on New Bonneville's territory at a great cost. When they went on to build their village, they would include memorials to the heroes lost in the battle, and it would be seamlessly woven into history lessons at the schoolhouse.
