Moonstead
Once a thriving and well-regarded district of Zanhor, during Torvar’s oppressive reign, Moonstead bore the brunt of his regime's brutal policies. Its citizens, many of whom were laborers and artisans, faced harsh taxation, violent crackdowns, and the relentless confiscation of property. What was once a community of bustling markets, vibrant culture, and closely-knit families crumbled under the weight of tyranny, leaving behind a fractured and impoverished population.
As Zanhor sought to heal in the wake of King Torvar's bloody reign, efforts to rebuild and transform the city began. However, the citizens of Moonstead, already downtrodden and struggling to recover, found themselves excluded from these grand plans. Wealth and resources were funneled into other districts, which were reshaped to cater to the burgeoning noble and military elite. As areas of the city became symbols of prosperity and gentrification, Moonstead fell further into neglect, the bounds of it's original residents pushed further and further into a tighter compact area as rich people moving into the area changed the landscape to accommadate their own communities. Its streets grew crowded with crumbling buildings, abandoned workshops, and desperate citizens left behind by a city striving to present a façade of progress.
Today, Moonstead is a district weighed down by its history and the inequalities of Zanhor’s modernization. The echoes of its former glory are still visible in its architecture—worn facades of once-stately buildings and faded murals that hint at a vibrant past. Yet, the district is now a ghetto where poverty and struggle are the norm. Despite the hardships, Moonstead is not devoid of life or resilience. Its people, bound by shared adversity, maintain a fierce sense of community, supporting one another in ways the broader city has failed to do.
However, amidst the gloom, there are efforts that have made themselves known as advocates trying to undo the continued invisibility of Moonstead to the ruling class. Sir Ulfrid Halkon was a wealthy noble, part of the noble class, though his "old money" manor dwellwed right on the premesise of where Moonstead connected to the rest of the city. A philanthropist at heart, he has championed several moves and donations to help Moonstead stay afloat, and his family fortune has served as the lifeblood of the community for several years up until his death just a earlier this year. The Church of Nightfall has emerged as a beacon of hope as well. In recent years as early as 1860 DR, the church’s presence has grown significantly in Moonstead, uniting the community through shared faith and defiance of unjust systems. The Church of Nightfall, a relativley new faith, with its edicts that challenge the legislation governing the district, has become a powerful voice of resistance. Members of the church operate soup kitchens and safehouses, providing food, shelter, and compassion to those in need. These services have become lifelines for many in a neighborhood otherwise abandoned by the city's institutions.
The church’s paladins and volunteers are a visible force for good in Moonstead, particularly during the perilous night hours. Acting as an unofficial city guard, they patrol the streets to protect residents from crime and external threats, offering a sense of security that the official city watch refuses to provide. Their presence has turned Moonstead’s once lawless nights into a time when the vulnerable can sleep with a measure of peace.
Moonstead is essentially a community almost wholely seperate from the rest of the city, forced to exist attatched to the shadow of the glorious kingdom of Zanhor.
