The Ruins of Caladan Sanctum

"The Caladans were the keepers of wisdom both old and new. Their mastery over magic was unsurpassed, and even the Tertians knew to fear them."

Nestled within the taiga in the north, Caladan Sanctum was a research colony of the Caladan nation, which became counted among the city-states of the The Unified Coalition as a hub of scholars and historians. The Ridge's residents took to calling the colony itself "Caladan", while the motherland became known as "Old Caladan". Caladian inhabitants, if pressed for a name, would simply refer to it as "Sanctum".   The city held extensive archives, libraries, and a renowned university, making it a hub for research, lore-keeping, and the pursuit of knowledge. In accordance with their policy of neutrality, the Caladians began a mass exodus back to the motherland in anticipation of the Tertius Empire's invasion, leaving behind their buildings and artifacts, including the Great Gubal Library.

Demographics

The abandoned settlement attracted treasure hunters, including the kobolds. Though normally a nomadic type, the kobolds made an unorthodox decision to create a settlement at the northern end of the city ruins, called Idyllshire, along with other treasure hunters.   Not all who arrived in the hinterlands had honest intentions. Many fewer than savory types, such as brigands, have sought Caladan's wealth, often at the detriment of the current inhabitants.

History

The hinterlands attracted students from all across Eorzea, and grew as a beacon of knowledge and wisdom. Yet, this was not to last. In 2742, tidings that the Tertian Empire was redying for war reached the city-states. To the Caladians, the Empire was a threat to their very way of life. They had spent an age stubbornly resisting all war. Caladan sent ambassadors to Teorcas with entreaties to stop their advance. They even strove mightily to parlay a peace, but all these pleas fell on deaf ears, and the envoys returned home empty-handed. In the wake of the failed negotiation, Fourchenault Leveilleur and the faction he led within the Forum elected to forsake their colony. Following five years of elaborate and painstaking preparation, the plan to evacuate the settlement's entire population to the northern archipelago of their homeland was put into motion. In 2747, the city of Sharlayan became a maze of empty streets and buildings in the space of a single evening.
