Groot is a Flora Colossi, and a founding member of the Guardians of the Galaxy, along with his friend and then-business partner Rocket.
His body was almost completely destroyed in the Battle of Stormguard. A surviving stick was replanted by Rocket, allowing Groot to begin his lifecycle again. As of 2018, he is in late adolescence.

As a Flora Colossi he possesses Super-Strength, enhanced durability and stamina, a Healing Factor, and quasi-Immortality.
He possesses limited Shape-Shifting, as he can manipulate the form of his body, extending his limbs, growing additional branches, or producing new leaves or flowers at will.

Personal history
Groot was seeded on Planet X, the homeworld of the Flora Colossi, and throneworld of the Branch Worlds.
His exact age is unknown, as Flora Colossi do not use galactic standard time, and their language is not well known enough for a definitive comparison of Branch World to Galactic Standard time to have been created. However, based on his height prior to his destruction in 2014, he was at least thirty years old at that point, and likely older.
He has rarely spoken of how he came to leave Planet X, stating only that he was exiled. What is known is that shortly after leaving the Jatskarian Branch Worlds, he was captured by raiders and sold to a zoo in the Galactic Rim.
After several years of imprisonment and mistreatment, he eventually escaped with the help of one of the robot guards, Tiberius Lark. The two fled the planet, eventually becoming mercenaries. However, they were eventually captured in Shi'ar space, and imprisoned pending trial, where they met fellow inmate Rocket.
Lark had been badly damaged in the fight preceding their arrest, and knew he would not be repaired by their captors, or provided the tools to repair himself. Before dying, he asked Rocket to look out for Groot, as his inexperience of the wider galaxy, and lack of reliable translation, made intergalactic travel difficult for him.
Although Rocket was initially somewhat reluctant, after Groot helped him escape the facility, he changed his mind, and the two became business partners and close friends. Other the years that followed, Groot accrued an extensive rap sheet, including three counts of GBH, thirteen more counts of escape from incarceration, and three counts of illegal Mercenary activity.
They took a variety of Criminal and mercenary work, including bounty hunting, which is what eventually led them to meet the rest of the Guardians of the Galaxy on Xandar.

Gender Identity
Flora Colossi are a monosex species, and have no conception of gender. Speakers of languages which use gendered pronouns typically use he/him when refering to him, but this is a projection of another culture's gender norms onto him, or a simple linguistic convention, rather than a reflection of his preference.

His species do not reproduce sexually, and have no concept of sexuality as it is understood by most mammalian species.

Since leaving his homeworld, he has been variously a Mercenary, Criminal, Bounty Hunter, Adventurer, and Superhero.

Family Ties
Flora Colossi do not have family groupings as most mammalian species would understand them. However, since his destruction and rebirth, he has been cared for by the Guardians of the Galaxy, who are primarily from species which reproduce sexually and have family units, and so the way they relate to him has shaped his thinking. As such, he considers them his family, but does not assign them any roles within that such as parent or sibling.

Since his rebirth, he has been introduced to video games by Peter Quill, which is how he spends much of his free time.

The Flora Colossi language is incomprehensible to most other sapients, and due to the shape of their throats and vocal chords, they are unable to speak other languages.

History
They were friends and business partners for several years, developing a level of trust and affection Rocket had never experienced before.
After Groot's destruction, Rocket was the one to regrow him, and became his primary caregiver. Their relationship has changed as a result, but they remain very close.
Wealth & Financial state
Groot owns almost nothing, and has no particular desire to. However, he does not fully understand the concept of personal property, so this lack of material possessions must be understood in the context that he considers the property of his teammates to be communal, even when they have explicitly told him otherwise.
