The Shadar Kai
Demography and Population
The Shadar Kai are an immortal group of elves and a few other humanoids (currently 10 non-elves) who travel between the Shadowfell and The Material Plane . The majority currently exist in The Shadowfell (roughly 45,000), though some 3,000 live on The Material Plane , almost entirely in The Underdark .
Religion
The Shadar Kai worship The Raven Queen . Once her loyal subjects, the Shadar Kai devoted all of their physical and magical power to her in a show of trust and belief in her goals. Their power is what sustains her quasi-godlike status, and in return she suspends their souls in a state between life and death.

Divine Origins
The Raven Queen was once a mortal elf ruler, who bade her subjects aid her in ascending to godhood, in an attempt to negotiate in the conflict between Lolth and the Seldarine pantheon. Using a combination of support from her loyal subjects and her own immense power she transcended mortality by learning to claim souls. A circle of wizards in her court hatched a plan to syphon this power away from her, so that they could wield it, but The Raven Queen became aware of the ritual as it began. She rushed to stop the ritual, but in interrupting it (blah blah blah) she was unable to break free from the spell and was banished from The Material Plane and flung into The Shadowfell . Lolth, displeased with her meddling, also banished her from the memories of all mortals. Due to her bond with her followers they were pulled with her, and so the Shadar Kai became as it is today.
Only through their bond did the Shadar Kai remember her, and when they die their souls join her in The Shadowfell instead of reaching one of the realms of Celestia, the Abyss, or the Nine Hells.
