So, originally when the area the elves are from, the Forest, was part of the feywild there were 13 great oaks in a fairy circle that acted as the main portal, which were each home to one of 13 royal houses. During the war of the Seldarine (which is basically the same and forgotten realms except I changed some of corellon and lolths motivations to be about chaos Vs order instead of good Vs evil) Lady Marcella of House Ariessus and her wife decided that the best way to help their people was to create a new member of the Seldarine to represent their interests and mediate the conflict.

So, they set up this ritual with many of their subjects volunteering to power it, with the plan being to anchor the spell in the great oak of their House. But a few traitors in the court still worshipped corellon and alerted him to the plan, so as the ritual was happening he chopped down the tree, severing both the ritual and the Forest's connection to the feywild.

Unfortunately, Marcella's life force and that of her followers was connected to the tree, and the ritual began to sap it out their energy instead of gaining it from the tree.

Then, just as they were all on the brink of death the heir to House Ariessus, Marcella's older sister Morwen found them. She sacrificed all of her potential futures, her memories and her life to instead pull them onto undeath, forming the dying tree stump into a portal to the shadowfell and creating the race of shadar Kai, and inventing the echo knight technique by separating herself from her magic potential and foreseen future
