Origins
Necessarius was formerly a government agency in Alfethina dedicated to stopping crimes involving magic, hunting after criminal magicians, and recovery of dangerous magic items both ancient and modern. Although their name is well known in the magic community, they operate in secret so it is likely they will work incognito as regular people when out on missions. Agents of Necessarius were known to be talented magicians capable of fighting other spellcasters as well as intellects who understand how to handle and study volatile magical products made by renegade magic users or organizations. Due to dangers of the job, Necessarius are always recruiting through collecting of orphan children capable of magic or young talents they come across. These recruits go through a Necessarius sponsored school and college program in which after passing a difficult test they can work in the organization for at least 5 years. After the 5 year mark, the agent is free to either continue serving Necessarius or head out on their own with their experiences.
Solar Wars and the Fall
Once the Solar Wars broke out, Necessarius was automatically drafted into the
Yedian Union and rediverted their agents and resources to focus as an intelligence agency. With their advanced magic and anti-magic skills, they have been providing the Yedian Union information on the enemy and dispatched to deal with magical agents from rival armies - particularly magical soldiers from the
Northern Suns Federation. Due to the brutality of the war most of their agents meet a gruesome fate and their numbers slowly dwindled. By the time the independent hero unit
Legacy, Defenders of the Federation helped to end the war, Necessarius had no more than 30 members out of the original 200. From their loss of manpower, resources, and being on the losing side, Necessarius eventually disbanded.
Mysterious Donor and Revival
Right before Necessarius could officially declare dismantlement, a mysterious patron approached them. Through some secret agreement Necessarius left the Yedian Union and eventually converted into a magic-based private detective agency. The surviving members started to rebuild their namesake into a new organization and lowered their original standards in recruit, hiring or taking on anyone who has the talent in magic. With their patron's support, Necessarius slowly regained respect among the magical community through their dedication as private investigators. Even after hundreds of years, no one knows who is the benefactor that saved them, neither do they know what purpose, and this topic has circulated through gossip, rumors, and debate.
Necessarius, Private Investigators
Years after the Solar War, Necessarius started to open investigation branches among the initial colony and more offices on various space stations. Each branch consist of at most three or four members, operating in small groups. Their chief management assigned them together based on how their strengths complement each other and covers for their weaknesses, to reduce as much internal conflict as possible.
Each branch is usually operated in small groups of at most four members. They use their small size and their mixed expertise to carry out investigations quietly while covering for each other's weaknesses. In a universe where magic is common place, any accidents, frauds, or crimes committed with magic would usually fall onto them. Necessarius often works closely with local authorities when their expertise is required and they accept any clients so long as the issue is related to magic.
Given their origins as spies and special agents, Necessarius members practice working in casual clothing and avoid standing out in public. They have been trained to hide their magic from arcane detection, passing off as normal people, and they utilize magical tools and equipment disguised in the form of keychains, jewelry, wrist watches, smart phone, or even cultural charms. This gives Necessarius agent an edge in covert operations, blending in with the common folk and carrying out their investigation in secret and their training carries over to this day.
Philosophy, Then and Now.
Originally, Necessarius was built on the belief of: "we work in the shadows to serve the light". Agents are often put in difficult positions where they must take action or a major decision or else there would be loss of life. Sometimes they have to break the law or bend the rules, in order to save as many people as possible. This was referred to as "necessary evil", where agents may have to commit morally grey actions in order to achieve the end goal that satisfy the situation as peacefully as possible; a form of utilitarian approach where the end justify the means.
After their fall and revival, the newer generation of Necessarius do not practice this philosophy as zealously and consider it more as a fancy office slogan. Many members are keen to follow the low, and would at most commit petty crimes such as breaking into a house to gather intel, or stealing items from others, so long as it helps to reach the conclusion of their investigation. Most of the time they would use their covert skills to return 'borrowed' items as if they never left, and thus minimize chances of authorities questioning them.
