Bryce Corwin

"I was a hard hitter in my youth. When I got a bit of drink in me, I got violent. I always wanted to live here, in this here wood. Make my life amidst the trees, but Maisie... Maisie wanted more. She loved me, but she had dreams, ambitions, passion so bright it scared the soul out of my body and bid me 'Run you fool. She don't deserve ye!' I was scared. I was horrible. I didn't deserve such a gentle soul. So I drank, hating myself, hating what I could not give her. My beautiful flower... And I hurt her. One time too many. I hurt her, so she broke me, and took her own life with her."
- A Haunting in Saltroot, Bryce Corwin.

Overview:

Bryce Corwin is a silent and lonely trapper, working deep within the Salt Root Forest and as far away from other people as possible. He comes into Shawgate and Steelport once a month, to sell whatever hides he has to make money, restore his traps and tools, before vanishing into the woods once again. He is a close friend to Audrey & Elswith Marrows, and the widower of Maisie Burrows. He took no part in the Devastation, stepping away from his family and condemning his sister to conscription instead. He claimed to owe no allegiance to the Church or its people, and retreated into the woods when it exploded.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Bryce is a healthy well built man in his late thirties, with a thick bushy beard, fierce eyebrows and wild brown hair. He looks, and smells, like a trapper out of books of lore. He is strong with a bow, but quiet enough to stealth about and lay in wait for his prey to fall into his traps. He's a muscular man, of middling height, and some claim his ancestors were likely of the Dànu that had migrated further north a few centuries ago.

Body Features

Bryce has wolf bites on his forearm, and a deep knotty scar across his chest from where a stag impaled him through the stomach. He also has numerous knife wounds along his forearms, self inflicted, from hours of gloomy reflection alone in the forest. Bryce has one tattoo branded into his side that reads a Laitosian prayer for the dead, and keeps his wedding band around his left ring finger.

Apparel & Accessories

Everyday Carry
Bryce is a practical man. His clothes are brown, covered in mud. They are all roughspun and padded for the cold. His shoes are tough leather boots, repaired and resoled over and over again. He carries a leather cap, tufted with wolf fur, and is often in a thick, foul smelling fur cloak. The trapper carries a thick rucksuck of traps and instruments for trap-making, as well as two vicious looking long knives at his side. He has abandonned the bow in favour of a crossbow, with a quiver of swallowtail bolts for hunting. Hanging from his belt are often the smaller prey he has caught, hares or pheasants, and a necklace of old boar tusks engraved with the names of his family.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Maisie Burrows and Bryce Corwin used to be as close as siblings. They were almost joined at the hip, their parents liked to say. When Bryce proposed to Maisie, 10 years ago, nothing could have made her happier. Doubt was there, yes, but together they could face anything. Bryce’s drinking had been a bad habit, yet with his sister’s death, it became violent… Maisie had always wanted more, he wished for nothing but a simple life, and bitterness took over the rest. After a particularly angry bout, she fled into the mountains, never to be seen again. All that was left of her was a night robe by a cliff, and Bryce's hopes were forever shattered. He dropped the bottle, and hid in the one place he knew no eyes would judge him. Deep within the woods.

Employment

Bryce is the local trapper in Shawgate and only comes out once every month from the Salt Root Forest to sell the hides he's gathered or take some news from the outside. He's largely known as a silent and off putting time, but few know him for who he truly is: a coward, and a very sad man who has lost his way. Recently, he has shown a little more initiative, though few notice it, and has addressed some of the bizarre happenings in the caverns close to where he works.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Bryce is renown as a hunter and trapper. He has often been relied upon to hunt down bears, wolf packs, or even some of the local bandits that have stepped over the line. Despite this, he has accomplished very little, other than aiding the local farmers keep their cattle safe. He can be called reliable and efficient in his work, but in the grand scheme of things he's done very little. Only a select few know of his past and its consequences.
  • A grim truth remains: Bryce is haunted by the tormented wraith of his dead wife, Maisie. Though she may simply stare at him from between the trees, he rarely sleeps and prays daily for her salvation. Much of the tasks he's undergone have been to redeem himself in her eyes, yet no amount of silent benevolence seem to satiate her wrath.

Personal Details
Hobbies:
  • Bryce is fond of carpentry, and has taken a liking in carving small animals out of dead wood. His works are occupational at best, but they keep him company in the cold windy halls of the Saltroot Forest. He also is an avid cook and is always trying to find new ways to cook various kinds of mushrooms, of which there is an over abundance of in his home region.
Horrors:
  • Bryce was a violently abusive husband, whose hatred for himself carried over in acts of physical assault against his now dead wife. He often sees her, haunting him through the trees, and has bouts of anger that lead him to harm himself or anything puncheable nearby. If it matters, his singing is rather horrific.
