Audrey & Elswith Marrows

Written by Gern

"I have often said, garlic in bed makes for a great way to chase evil dreams away."
"Nay nay, 'tis wolfsbane you want!"
"To poison him? Elswith, you barely know him, invite the poor fellow to luncheon first."
"Oh, but I do think he's quite pretty. Like a button, he is. I'd love to try venoms on his skin..."
"You crotchety old hag, garlic works best."
"Wolfsbane."
"I'll give ye wolfsbane in your tea if you don't shut it!"
"I knew it! You're jealous! Murder! Murder! She means to kill me!"

Overview:

Audrey & Elswith Marrows are twin sisters living on the outskirts of Shawgate, in the province of Westmarch. These two old crones have a talent for herbology and alchemy respectively. Though revered they are feared by the local community, and have many vile rumours circulating about them. Some of which may be true... They are often found in their chaotic cottage, or wandering the woods of the Saltroot looking for fresh ingredients for their next batch of elixirs and poisons.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

The sisters have maintained a healthy, active lifestyle. Their profession forces them to go out into the woods, to forage and explore, and albeit age has rapidly been catching up to them, they can still hold their own in a tussle. Wearing roughly sewn clothes, with elements of animals they have hunted or bought, they shun the fancy robes and dresses sent to them by their patron for something more practical.

Body Features

The sisters are lithe and spry, albeit Audrey favours her left leg, and Elswith's lower back aches whenever it's about to rain. They both carry marks of the war on their arms and feet, scars left by gunfire and cannon shrapnel. They have had to defend themselves numerous times from the soldiers of the Legion, and have suffered for it. Missing teeth, scars on the shoulder, arrow wounds in the chest and legs... If Audrey were to lower her collar, the burn marks of a rope around her neck would be visible.

Apparel & Accessories

Everyday Carry
Both sisters prefer the practical to the beautiful, though they are no strangers to fashions or, somehow, the latest courtly extravagance. They were a roughspun linen dress, a worn leather belt segmented with pouches, thick boots for travel, and a crown of antlers and holly to scare away annoying brats. Audrey wears a short sword with her constantly, whilst Elswith carries a small bottle of transluscent liquid in her satchel. During the winter, they carry thick cloaks lined with wolf fur, or sheep's skin jackets and mittens to keep warm.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Audrey and Elswith were born to a young lady betrothed too quickly and too soon. When their mother became pregnant with twins, and not the heir her husband had desired, the family was quick to leave her on the side of the road with nothing to her name. The abandoned wife left for the woods, hoping to find shelter there. She lived there for a decade, living on the outskirts of civilization with her two children, until a wolf got to her. The girls then had to fend for themselves, learning which herbs produced what kinds of effects, which mushrooms were best for which elixirs, and how the bark of a willow tree could soothe head pains. When the war came along, the Magistrates of Steelport reached out to the twin sisters of the woods, for their aid and advice. They became notorious as skilled healers, albeit pagan/occult ones. With the commissions from the battles and the saved lives of many a wealthy patron, they chose to retire to Shawgate, in a grand hut in the woods they called home.

Employment

Audrey & Elswith are the local herbalists and alchemists of Shawgate respectively. They can provide all the instruction, recipes and knowledge needed, so long as they can stop bickering and tricking one another into eating this or that poisonous herb. Both were employed, for a time, by the Magistrates of Steelport to serve as poison testers, alchemists and master physicians, although their interests lay more in the Saltroot woods that is their home.

Accomplishments & Achievements

During the Devastation, Audrey & Elswith were conscripted as healers to help provide for their country. They are renown for their feats of miraculous medicine, and have brought more than one reckless lord or brave levy back to health. Their pride resides in the safety of their wards, and the quality of their mushroom and leek pies, which are - so they claim - equally as famous. They were the first to notice that the Legion had begun poisoning wells and other water points across the field. Their quick and efficient restoration of the Magistrate of Steelport's son gave them a long lasting reputation as masters of medicine.
  • A grim truth remains: Despite their prowess, a darker side of the war still lingers. Healers they were, yes, but also alchemists. On the orders of the Church, the twins were asked to develop vitriolic gases and poisons for blades and arrows that could melt the skin off a man's bones. Though they took great pleasure in its creation, when troops on their side started coming back with symptoms of their creations, a seed of darkness and doubt settled. To many they are simply known as the witches of war, but to the Church, their exploits in human suffering will always follow them.

Personal Details
Hobbies:
  • Audrey likes to debate theology and politics with Brother Edwin Randall, of Shawgate. Elswith likes to develop new potions and poisons for the local population, namely aphrodisiacs that she can prank others with. Both like to pretend they are the other, and trick others into believing such.
Horrors:
  • Audrey has given up her faith. She no longer believes that Laitos can allow a world where innocent men and women are massacred by others. She does not hate the Church, but mourns it. She also never sleeps without a light on. She sees images in the shadows that remind her of her past on the battlefield, and will attack any who extinguish it.
  • Elswith’s key interests are in poisons. She became notorious for being able to recognise them when lacing food or dropped in drinks. She may have developed a few for the war as well… She often speaks to herself, albeit never in her own voice, as if possessed or channelling another human being. At times, her voice is complete gibberish, other times she is quite eloquent.

Virtues & Vices:
Audrey:
  • Bright, wise, forgiveful & philosophical.
  • Depressed, quick to anger & jealous.
Elswith:
  • Sharp, intelligent, resourceful & witty.
  • Liar, mocking & vindicative.
