Brother Edwin Randall

"If it is a wraith, as you say, then you will need holy water to slay it for good. Do not believe its lies, it is but a shadow of its past self, latching on to the hatred and horrors of the world. Only Laitos may bring her back to the light, it is best then to give it a clean and quick death. I have a small vial of water, blessed by the Archon herself, down in the crypt. It is yours, come back to me with proof that it is done."
- A Haunting in Saltroot, Brother Edwin.

Overview:

Brother Edwin Randall is the local Solar of the Church of the Redeemer in Shawgate. He is a venerable and wise man, commanding the respect of his people through a calm demeanour and a jovial - if somewhat sarcastic - tone. He considers himself a man of the world, and will gladly share his travels and adventures on the various postings he has received over a glass of wine or whiskey. Brother Edwin tends to a simples garden, as well as the crypt that resides below his chapel. He can be found within the Chapel, often tending to the offerings and its altar.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Brother Edwin has gained some weight over his years of service in Shawgate. he used to be a muscular man of faith, often training in the yard with weights as well as joining in the ploughing season. Despite this, he has let himself go, and enjoys quite a hefty amount of beer in the evening, all manner of fried foods, as well as brews his own whiskey.

Body Features

Brother Edwin still has the arms of a ploughman, and used to be quite muscular beneath his clerical robes. Nowadays, he sports a growing beer belly matching aging jowls of his visage. He bears some of the marks of war, but was lucky enough to be healed regularly through Light magic. His most gruesome scar is a burn mark along his right forearm from where he was grappled by a Hàlogi prisoner.

Apparel & Accessories

Everyday Carry
Brother Edwin sports the cassock of his faith, with a bark brown hood to shelter from the rain. He carries a pendant in honor of Laitos, taking the shape of an antlered deer with a radiant sun behind it, and a tome containing a large number of prayers and incantations of Light magic. He has multiple similar attires for every day, and wears a scarf embroidered with golden thread on his shoulders during service. He also carries a small notebook full of information on herbs, namely common herbs, as well as a bag of seeds.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

Edwin felt the calling to become a minister of Laitos, Goddess of the Sun at the age of 16, and has been posted in various churches and communities over the course of his 30 years of service. He has seen much of the world, and considers himself a worldly man. During the Devastation, he worked as a field surgeon, seeing many people die in his hands from corruption of the dark, or horrendous wounds. After the war, he requested to be posted in his hometown of Shawgate, but found none of his family had survived to meet him. Since then he has been the faithful brother in spirit to the many souls that live within Shawgate's valley, watching over them as a shepherd would his flock.

Employment

Brother Edwin is the local Solar of the Church in Shawgate, representing the Church of the Redeemer's doctrine, faith and power in this region. Officially, he sees to the wellbeing and holiness of flock's souls, and ensures that no heresy takes place under his watch. In effect, Brother Edwin sweeps the chapel, tends to his garden, the occasionnal burial of one of the villagers, and dispenses clerical wisdom over a mug of ale. He cares about his people in his own way, but often considers this posting as his well deserved retirement, taking the affairs of the village lightly rather than the tragedies they may truly be.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Throughout his travels for the Church, Brother Edwin has achieved quite alot, albeit on smaller more personal scales than others. He has helped women give birth, converted a few dozen people, and even fostered a fugitive from pursuing soldiers of the Legion. When the Devastation began, he was called from his post to aid in the war effort by joining a group of clerics that would provide magical healing to high profile victims and tactitians. He also helped prisoners of the war recover from their wounds, so that they might answer better to questioning.
  • A grim truth remains: Edwin's efforts in healing other war prisoners worked directly into a short-lived attempt at espionage. Whilst healed, some of the prisoners would become double agents or moles, and report back to the Church any further movements or details. Edwin also had to question his subjects and prolong their suffering, only allowing them to be healed when they would answer. The enterprise was quickly shut down, when discovered it proved of little use.

Personal Details:
Hobbies:
  • Brother Edwin's brief posting as a missionary within the lands of the Boann people exposed him to Ahtenese poetry, which he likes to read and compose. One of Edwin's greatest prides is his simples garden, which he tends to daily and ensures that it is constanly replenished, protected and well soiled.
Horrors:
  • Edwin believes in the Church’s doctrines, making him completely detached from those who take their own lives, and the plights of those that go against Laitos’ teachings. As such he also holds little friendship with mages/practitioners of elemental magic, believing them to be the source of leading a man’s soul astray. Furthermore, after seeing the powers of the Dark, Edwin has gained a fear and obsession with it. Although cautious of anything that emits its powers, he is more than willing to collect artifacts of the Dark for ‘study’.
