Duchy of Pilltonshire
For over a thousand years, Pilltonshire has remained the frontal defence against the native Alteslanders. This once left them crippled and in debt, but ever since Duke Gordan bent the knee to King Simon I, the duchy began to thrive. With constant funding into its defence, Pilltonshire has grown into the military head of Leudrania.
Structure
The Duchy of Pilltonshire is ruled - as the name suggests - by a duke, a duke of House Shawe to be precise. The Shawe's have ruled Ostenshire for just over a thousand years. The duke is aided in their rule by their spouse and their Castellan (a form of advisor). Duke's and duchess' have less control of their land as they once did, with the King and Parliament having absolute authority over them, however, they still have direct authority over much of their realm.
History
When the Leudran's first landed on the island of Altesland, the other great houses were none too happy with serving House Weston, who had oft been thought of as the least noble of the houses (with it being the most recent to have been founded at the time, and by a simple fisherman turned knight no less) and so they all set off into these new lands to found their own nations. House Shawe, the oldest and most respected of the Leudran house's took lead of three other of the noble families (House Gottren, House Lolling and House Veinhammer) and set off deep into the the native Altescine people's territories. This brought them into direct conflict with the natives and forced them into a deep-seated rivalry that still thrives to this day. Eventually, after some hard fought battles, Devon Matthias Shawe, first born of the legendary Count Matthias Shawe, settled his people at the eastern edge of the forest of Avalon, establishing the city of Pilliton and the Duchy of Pilltonshire. In recent years, however, constant raids from the newly united Altescine people has left the duchy weak, and thus its neighboring duchies have been able to claim much of their territory leaving them with only a third of their previous territories in only a few decades.
