The Widinia Swamp
Geography
The Widinia Swamp is located in the flat lowlands between the Gen Hills and the Fopedil River. The landmasses throughout the Delta are ever-changing due to the intermittent flow rate of the River. This causes the locals to constantly have to relearn the paths made by the distributaries
Ecosystem
The farmlands in the north of Hufa Province are some of the most fertile on the continent. The rich topsoil is mixed in as the Fopedil River heads south, depositing it along the distributaries in the delta that forms the majority of the Widinia Swamp.
Ecosystem Cycles
The majority of the changes that occur in the swamp happen when the spring comes and the Fopedil runs quicker with the snow melt.
Localized Phenomena
Far below the surface of the swamp exists fast moving lava tubes that heat the ground and infuse the earth with a unique set of minerals.
Fauna & Flora
Many of the common plants and animals common to tropical swamps can be found in the Widinia Swamp. Among the plants unique to the Widinia Swamp include a tuber called astepia.
Natural Resources
The unique soil and water-table of the Widinia swamp allows two things to be found in plentiful abundance only in the swamp. Basalt Lichen and Astepia, a major ingredient in making flicker powder.
Flicker Powder and Basalt Lichen are two key ingredients in the production of Fire Salt
History
The Widinia has long been known as a trackless expanse that only those who have lived there their whole lives know the trick of navigating it. Widi's, as those locals are known as, live in secret villages on the few semipermenant landmasses in the delta. From their they have gone about their lives, harvesting resources from the swamp and taking them inland to the villages north of them for sale. This had been the norm for centuries until around 645 BF when Fire Salt was invented. Since then the demand for Basalt Lichen and astepia, two key ingredients, has increased and more and more wealth flows into Widi's coffers.
This increased wealth allowed them to construct a small city on piled stone, giving them the first fully permanent settlement within the swamp that could endure the yearly changes the swamp underwent.
