Basalt Lichen

"Among all the strange things to come out of the Widinia Swamp, Basalt Lichen stands alone for it's impact on the world."

Basic Information

Anatomy

The fungal partner forms the main body, called the thallus, while the photosynthetic partner resides within it.   Key anatomical features of a lichen:   Thallus: The main body of the Basalt lichen   Cortex: This is the outer layer, typically composed of tightly packed fungal cells, providing protection and in some cases, color.   Medulla: This is the loose layer of interwoven fungal hyphae within the thallus,   Algal Layer: This is the layer where the photosynthetic partner ( cyanobacteria) is concentrated, often embedded within the fungal hyphae.   Rhizines: Root-like structures on the lower surface of some foliose lichens, used for attachment to the substrate.   Cephalodia: Structures containing cyanobacteria, often found on the surface of lichens that also contain green cyanobacteria.   Apothecia: This is where the fruiting bodies of the fungal partner reside, containing spores.   Podetia: This is the upright, stalk-like structures supporting the apothecia

Genetics and Reproduction

Basalt Lichen can produce sexually, via spore release or asexually via fragmentation.

Growth Rate & Stages

Basalt Lichen grows faster then similar species. It can grow up to 20 mm a year.

Ecology and Habitats

Basalt Lichen can only be found in The Widinia Swamp due to the active lava tubes below the swamp and coastline

Biological Cycle

Like most lichens, Basalt Lichen feeds off of the cyanbacteria in the swamp and it also creates a vast array of nutrients that enriches the land around them. The Widi's take advantage of this by planting crops near their Lichen farms.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Can only be found in the Widinia Swamp. Attempt to grow it elsewhere results in a perfect failure rate
Lifespan
Unknown. If left alone in an unaltered enviornment Basalt Lichen can last forever
Conservation Status
Due to its high demand in the production of Fire Salt, the Widi have created vast Basalt Lichen farms to ensure it's availability for trade.
