The Iridian Barrel
"I've offered them more riches then I can afford to get the design of those blasted barrels but they WILL NOT SELL!" lament of a merchant of Astegil
Iridian Moss is a rare plant that only grows in a few spots on the Continent. The Lunadorn have always known of it, using it to keep food from spoiling. But it wasn't until 98 AF that it's true potential became known. A Lunadorn family found itself on the wrong side of a bandit band in southern Sendilar. It looked bad until a detachment of the Order of the Silver Crescent. When the fight ended the bandits were dead to a man and only a few lost to the detachment. The knight in command of the detachment offered to escort the family, who had several small children, to the nearest town to gather supplies. During the journey the knight, Sir Delvin Silveredge, was fascinated with the long journeys the the Lunadorn engaged in. When asked how they transported enough food if the hunting was banned the answer intrigued him. The normally taciturn Lunadorn were grateful for their rescue and escort. So they told him of Iridian Moss and how it kept foodstuffs greatly delayed spoiling when it was packed with it. It was only a few years before most food stores of the Order of the Silver Crescent were packed with Iridian Moss.
Utility
All long term foodstuffs are stored in Iridian Barrels. The Order of the Steadfast Anchor exclusively uses them aboard their ships and find massive benefit from this since it allows them to engage in longer voyages.
Manufacturing
Honey Nut Oil is manufactured in Akina. The barrels and their specialized lids are manufactured in Lann and shipped to Akina for sealing and assembly.
Access & Availability
They are only available to the Knightly Order's of the Kingdom of Sendilar
Complexity
They are remakedly simple in concept. The creation of the specialized lids as well as the Honey Nut Oil to seal the barrels were far more complex.
Discovery
When Honey Pine Oil was discovered in 156 AF it took only a year for a young student of Reving University, Sasha Behemilia, to devise the first Iridian Barrel. Within a decade Iridian Barrels were being supplied to ever Order of the Kingdom of Sendilar. The method of their creation is a closely held secret.
