35 - 2/13/25 : The Thaw | Epilogue

"Bound fast unto our fate,
One path, one burden great,
Yet ever do our aching souls point heavensward.   Ever rings out our song,
Yes, ever do our aching souls march heavensward,
As they've done for so long."
One year later...   Ragna and Alith at last finished putting the touches on Nevara's Lost Spire to serve as Alith's spelljammer dock in the Taiga. The tower had been cleaned up and had its foundations reinforced, and Ragna had gone through the effort to carve the contents of all of Nevara's letters into the spire's walls. The two looked upon it, admired their work, and considered what would be next for them. As they did, Peanut bumped into Ragna with an opened letter from Dahlia in her mouth, reminding the duo that they intended to go visit the newly settled Helgafel.   The duo made the trek due southeast past the edges of the Snowdrift Flatlands, and laid eyes upon Helgafel for the first time. As they admired the town that had been constructed surprisingly quickly, they spotted Dahlia on the outskirts standing beside a red-skinned tiefling woman.   Dahlia greeted her friends and introduced the tiefling as Melanie, a new arrival to the town whom she was already showing around. She invited Ragna and Alith to join her in the tour she was conducting, and the two eagerly agreed. Dahlia gave them an overview of Helgafel, where many people that the party met the previous year were now living. When prompted with the question of where to go first, the group decided to honor tradition and visit the Helgafel Inn first for drinks.   Immediately upon entering, the party was greeted happily by the patrons of the packed inn. They were offered meals on the house from Scramzax and Vernon Braig, who went into business together after their respective establishments were destroyed by the Broken Blade and their Chardalyn Dragon. Ragna was served an entire roasted reindeer and a barrel of mead with a welded handle to accommodate for their size, while the others were provided their usuals for free.   The group caught up with Doluma Sunblight, who had departed Duhngrave out of disagreements with Lord Blackhammer over the settlement's fate. Ragna offered her a spot in the Tempered Blade tribe; Doluma didn't believe she was meant to be a barbarian, but did know that they knew how to celebrate, and that idea fit in well with her faith in the brotherly gods of drink. She decided to at least accompany the tribe for a time until she found somewhere that she belonged.   The Lonesome Few and Melanie then met with Dannika Greysteel, who was playing with several chwingas in her care. She mentioned she had penned an entire almanac on the elementals and their behavior, but decided not to publish it, so that she would not draw undue attention to their fragile environment. Melanie and Dannika recognized each other as fellow scholars, and Dannika offered to help Melanie get started in doing research in the Taiga as she had been.   Ragna then reunited with Ivory Farrowbane, who was seated with four newly initiated Blood Hunters of the Via Venatori. She introduced them to Ragna, and declared them the first members of her newly established chapter; the Frozen Chorus. Ivory intended to put her people to work hunting down monsters and other dangerous creatures emerging into the far more hospitable climate. Ragna took this as a challenge in jest, as the Tempered Blade also intended on doing so; Ivory offered her aid in exchange for coin should the need ever arise, and Ragna agreed.   After departing the Inn, Dahlia brought her companions to the lodge where her newly established guild was located. On the lodge's porch, she made an executive decision and decided on a name for the group then and there; the Wardens in White.   Inside the group was greeted by Garret Velryn and his husky, Boy. Garret inquired after Sóley, who had stayed with him a while as the Lonesome Few contended with the chardalyn dragon. Ragna had only good news to share about Sóley and her peculiar three-axe fighting style.   Oarus Masthew and Khesen Verdusk greeted the party as well. Oarus revealed that he had declined to return to politics and instead decided to hone his talents as a ranger that he had developed during the encounters with the Broken Blade. Together, these four rangers comprised the first Wardens in White of Helgafel, under the command of Dahlia. They would serve as a ranger's guild, hunting food for the people of Helgafel while also ensuring that animal populations were tracked and maintained.   Ragna noted that their sister Valdís was preparing to do something similar with the hunters of the Tempered Blade, and gave the Wardens an open offer of collaboration should they ever need it.   As the group departed, Dahlia snuck a kiss on Oarus' cheek, thinking none of her companions were watching. Naturally, they all saw the entire thing.   The group next visited the Giving Tree. The large pink-leafed tree was Gleha's pet project, and stood in the center of town. Gleha, Brynjar, Tali, and a small silver dragon wyrmling stood nearby and happily greeted the Lonesome Few on their arrival.   Tali introduced the group to Meifft, who had hatched from the silver dragon egg recovered by Melfina in Grimskalle. Tali had chosen 'Meifft' as a name, as it meant 'Balance' in the drow language - something they assumed Melfina would appreciate.   Gleha introduced the party to the spirit of the Giving Tree; the dryad Hathowyn, whom they had previously met in the Caves of Hunger. Wishing to see what her daughter Orizana had fought and died for, Gleha visited many of the places the party had been to shortly after the winter ended, and managed to free Hathowyn from her lonely existence in the caves. However, years of solitude and her removal from the magical field of Ythryn following the Mythallar's destruction had a negative effect on Hathowyn's health, rendering her mostly mute. She did, however, softly and silently greet the party with a smile.   Brynjar greeted Ragna, who asked if he would like to take them up on their offer and join the Tempered Blade a jarl of one of its several halls. Brynjar refused gently, saying that Siegmar's actions had shown him that the barbarian life was no longer for him, and that he was proud to have found his own path in life. He would always consider the Tempered Blade his family, however, and gladly offered to train whoever was to take his place as the jarl.   Ragna mentioned that he wanted to honor their fallen siblings - even ones such as Úlfur - by creating more halls exemplifying their virtues. The standing plan was for six in total with room for more to be added later, named in the runic giant language:   There was Hall of Ferd ("Journey") - Rangers and hunters led by Valdís, which aimed to teach proper survival techniques and food preservation, emphasizing the importance of not taking more than needed.   Next was the Hall of Liv ("Life") - Healers, led by a healer eventually chosen by Brynjar, that would teach both magic and natural healing, often helping travelers while journeying.   The Hall of Krig ("War") was for warriors, to be led by Sóley once she completed her rite of passage - this hall would be the closest to old tribe teachings, but now not the only option before them.   Then the Hall of Ise ("Ice") - Skalds, led by Ragna, who would aim to preserve and make new sagas and traditions, so that the past and the struggles of those who came before would never be forgotten.   The eventual Hall of Stein ("Stone") would welcome shamans and mages, founded in memory of Hulda and Fannar.   Lastly, the Hall of Skye ("Cloud") would take in tacticians and tricksters, honoring the dangerous but undeniably cunning Úlfur.   Ragna and Alith spoke to Tali about what they intended to do with themselves now that the winter had been ended. Tali admitted that they were at a loss at first; they made no secret of the bond and feelings that they and Melfina had shared with one another, but Melfina's binding to Ythryn made acting on these feelings a source of heartbreak. Tali could not subsist on emotional connection alone, and not being able to touch an illusory Melfina was too difficult. Still, Tali treasured Melfina greatly, and wanted to be sure that she always had someone in the Taiga to talk to. Thus, Tali ultimately decided to stay in Frostgale, raising Meifft on their own, continuing their research, and waiting with Melfina until the end came.   Next, the group made their way to Helgafel's popular bathhouse. The place was packed with Ten Towners, sharing the steaming pools with visiting orcs of Storm's Call and goliaths of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains. Thokgrim arose from his pool and gave the party an uproarious greeting.   The Lonesome Few and Melanie joined Thokgrim and Chieftess Ogolai in the communal bath and caught up with each other. Thokgrim revealed that the orcs and goliaths initially clashed with one another after crossing paths a year ago on the path to Helgafel. However, ever the diplomat, Thokgrim saw this conflict come to an end when he mediated peace and took Ogolai's hand in marriage, making her one of his several wives.   Thokgrim asked Alith about her eventual return to 'the World of Whales'. Alith admitted that although she did intend to return, and had for some time, she was scared of leaving the Taiga behind and facing the agents of her mother among Realmspace again. Thokgrim only praised her for admitting her fear, saying that a true warrior was not one who knew no fear, but was rather one who knew their fear and acted in spite of it.   To Ragna, Thokgrim gave the news that his scouts had been to the far north beyond the mountain range, and that they had encountered evidence that King Siegmar was once again raising troops and preparing his people for an incursion south. Their target this time, however, would be the town of Aspencove on the western shore of the Valrua, on the other side of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains. Thokgrim proudly boasted that he had struck up a diplomatic communique with Aspencove, and was prepared to lend them the aid of his people and that of the goliaths when the barbarians made it to their gates.   Thokgrim asked if Ragna and their people would stand against Siegmar at the gates of Aspencove with them, and Ragna eagerly agreed. The two swore that they would strike the killing blow together, and end Siegmar's reign of terror once and for all.   Next, the party investigated the source of the springs themselves, finding several steaming pools in the snowy earth on the town's outskirts. They met Atenas Swift, the explorer from Caer Sella, who was warming his aging bones and taking notes on the springs.   Atenas asked the party's permission to write a book detailing the Everlasting Rime and their adventures to stop it. He realized that he had few years remaining, and that detailing the journeys of the Taiga's heroes would be a good way to spend them. He intended to have his husband Jartha, who was much longer-lived than he as a dwarf, to take his writing south, publish them, and spread them far and wide. He hoped that this would remind the people of the more civilized southlands that the Taiga had fought, had endured, survived, and most importantly - they were vibrantly alive.   The party next stopped at the Town Square, where they spoke with some of the remaining town speakers. They discovered that Speaker Danneth Waylen of Three Streams had married his captain of the guard Indra, and together the two were spearheading the effort to render aid unto Helgafel.   Trovus, formerly of Caer Sella, could no longer call himself Speaker after the destruction of his town, but continued to assist the survivors regardless. He had given up the bottle for good, swearing to never drink again.   Olivessa of Honeybrook revealed that she was still running the town's mead hall as an outpost. Honeybrook could no longer be considered an official town with no one attempting to rebuild it, and thus Olivessa could no longer claim the title of Speaker, but despite this, she declared that the mead must flow.   Speaker Naerth Maxildanaar of Mirlake had turned over a new leaf in the year following his imprisonment, and was now working to make up for the mistakes he made during the winter. He carried the scars of his ordeals still, now walking with the aid of a prosthetic left leg.   The remaining three towns surrounding the Mirrored Reservoir, having weathered the winter and the invasion much better than their neighbors, were blessed with a surplus of supplies and materials, and thus were only too happy to help the people of Camp Daybreak settle into what was now Helgafel.   Proceeding to the market, the Lonesome few spied Dzaan the wizard as he argued with a merchant over spell component costs. It was apparent that restoring Hollowfaust was an expensive job.   They were happily greeted by Bombini Buzzbubble, who had given up Speakership over Hartwick - the town was in the process of being abandoned, having been strained by supporting the refugees of Camp Daybreak. Bombini had become romantically involved with Prudence Tarkwold, who also was trying to turn over a new leaf just like Naerth, and claimed that she'd make a fine stepmother.   The group then encountered Izobai, a traveling goblin con artist trying to sell useless junk for whatever price people would pay. She had a hooded human nearby standing as her security, but it was soon revealed that this person was none other than Hew Mann, three kobolds in a trenchcoat.   Ragna offered Izobai and the three kobolds places in the Tempered Blade tribe, respecting their ability to deceive and distract. Izobai initially showed disinterest, but given the lack of success she had been having in Helgafel, she decided to give it a shot. Holgi, Snorp, and Zilbo briefly argued with each other before joining, but eventually the whole of Hew Mann came to a consensus and decided to throw in with the Tempered Blade as well.   For their last stop of the tour, the Lonesome Few visited Markham Southwell. Having seen too much battle, and still grieving the loss of Duvessa Shane, Southwell had retired from warfare and became a general handyman, helping people build their houses and fixing small things about town. He apologized to Ragna for killing several of their people in the Battle of Whiteridge, but Ragna assured him that they had made their choices and were surely welcomed to Valhalla.   With their tour completed, Dahlia bade the group good night, promising to see them first thing in the morning. Ragna, Alith, and Melanie retired for the night, staying at the Helgafell Inn until the morning sun greeted them.   Alith, Ragna, Melanie, and Dahlia gathered at the Giving Tree the following day, while Gleha and the others were away. Dahlia instructed Melanie to speak with the remaining town Speakers about settling in Helgafel, as the town had yet to elect a mayor to administer such processes. Melanie thanked the group for their aid, and departed.   Alith announced that she had finally mustered up the courage to use the token she had been given by Veszaltyrr a year ago, and thus return to Realmspace. As she did, Melfina appeared in her illusory form, startling Ragna who was still not used to this manner of sudden apparition.   Melfina revealed that, for better or worse, she was as happy as she could be with her current situation, frozen in the ruined Ythryn as she was. She had plenty to read, and there was plenty of time to keep in touch with her friends and associates.   Ragna assured Alith that this parting was not goodbye; only 'see you later'. She also proclaimed all three of her companions to be honorary members of the Tempered Blade, and that all the tribesfolk would know to give them aid and hospitality on sight.   Dahlia thanked everyone for the whole of their adventure, and for helping her when she was at her lowest. She hoped that in her efforts to keep Helgafel safe, that she would honor her father's memory and make him proud.   Before Alith departed for good, Ragna pulled the entire group, even the incorporeal Melfina, into a group hug. With their farewells concluded, Alith produced the brass token and activated it, instantly fading away to the Rock of Bral.
Days later, at the site of an old Shrine of La Saia, Ragna had gathered eight new hopeful members of the Tempered Blade (including Izobai and the three kobolds that comprised Hew Mann) together alongside two seasoned warriors (including Valdís), and proclaimed the start of the first Rite of the Frostmaiden.
"Alright, today we're starting the Tempered Blade's first big tradition. We're calling it the Rite of the Frostmaiden, unless we come up with something better. Feels kinda weird doing it so soon after the winter ended, but traditions gotta start somewhere. We're gonna be traveling around the Taiga, visit the towns that got destroyed and a few other big places we found while trying to reach La Saia - got a few reasons for it.   "First, I want you to see why the Broken Blade is gone, why it couldn't go on the way Siegmar thought it would. You're gonna see what the dragon he made did, why Gunnar of all people feared it. When you do, I want you to think about if that thing was gonna save our tribe.   "Second, I want you all to see that the tribe's not the only thing in the Taiga. Part of this is gonna be helping out people who aren't in the tribe, mostly by killing the things that make this place so damn deadly. They always told us that there was the tribe and everyone else, that only one of those mattered, and that there was only one way to deal with things in the Taiga. I could tell ya that's wrong, but I never listened when people told me that, so instead, I'll let ya see for yourself.   "We'll be seeing a lot of people who aren't good at fighting, but they're good at other stuff. We're here cause we're good at killing when other people need that, but ya also gotta learn when to keep your blades steady. Got a story about a lake monster for later, maybe we'll get to talk to him too, but sometimes there's more of a story when you don't kill the thing.   "And last, this is about La Saia. Nevara. Her story and the Tempered Blade's are connected in a lot of ways. This all started cause she didn't like how her tribe did things either, and I want you to see how bad that can get. Nevara was a warrior, and we never forget the story of a warrior. If our tribe ever starts causing problems, I hope all of you will have the strength she did to fight it. Now, we've got a long winter ahead of us, let's get moving."
Each initiate of the tribe pledged themselves to this cause, and the first of many Rites began. Ragna kept their eye on the horizon, never forgetting what came before them, but never again turning back to regret their path in life.
Alith, after spending several weeks on the Rock of Bral looking for work and to acquire a spelljammer of her own, returned to her favorite haunt; the Happy Beholder, owned and operated by the friendly beholder Large Luigi.   She and Luigi caught up and discussed Alith's situation. As they did, a githyanki soldier stepped out from another chamber, causing Alith to brace herself. However, the gith instead attacked a nearby Illithid pirate, but Luigi petrified the gith before any damage could be done. He noted to his autonomous staff to put another potion of stone to flesh on the tab of the githyanki raiding party staying at the tavern.   Luigi encouraged Alith to take a risk, and gave her a stone disc inscribed with Tir'su markings - the written word of the gith. He mentioned that it was a token that represented a favor owed to him by a friend, and gave Alith instructions on what ship and dock to bring it to. Alith thanked Luigi for everything and set off for the Free Port of Bral's docks.   While pacing the docks, Alith was pursued by two gith that had tailed her from the Happy Beholder. She attempted to remain calm and inconspicuous, but soon had to opt for fleeing. However, a well-timed misty step and a sword held to her throat from behind put her at the gith's mercy.   The voice of the blade's wielder spoke to Alith in strange turns of phrase, and asked her a question.
"You wear the face of the dead tyrant, yet you walk with the token of a friend in your possession. Tell me; are you a friend to the people, or do I look upon you with Vilquar's eye? Answer this; what force in all the worlds can stand against unity?"
Alith immediately recognized the words of the Eighth Circle of Zerthimon and replied in kind; that nothing could.
"When all know a single purpose, when all hands are guided by one will, and all act with the same intent, the Planes themselves may be moved."
This answer was enough for the githzerai assailants to lower their weapons. Their leader, an old zerth named Dak'kon who had long strode the planes, praised Alith for her knowing of herself despite the terrible expectations placed upon her by Vlaakith. Dak'kon pronounced that regarding the gith people, that there 'could not be two skies', and explained to her his long-term goal to work towards freeing his githyanki cousins from Vlaakith's tyranny. Dak'kon invited Alith to join him and his crew on this long and arduous quest, and Alith gladly accepted.
Fourteen years later, the newly reborn La Saia contemplated her own existence and nature in her realm in the Frostfell. Still getting used to the non-linear perspective of time that came with divinity, she was surprised when a pull called her name from a plane beyond her own. Not a plea or a prayer; a demand.   In his Clockwork Sanctum, in the space between everything and nothing, Veszaltyrr summoned four clockwork angels using the Heart of Cygnus, and used their energy to fuel the spell that he would use to directly speak to La Saia.   La Saia answered this call, and the two spoke. Veszaltyrr's tone was quite hostile, but it was clear that he longed to see something remaining of Melfina in the goddess before him. Sentimentality seemed to be his greatest weakness.   Their discussion led to Veszaltyrr laying out his plans for the future, as well as discussing a new contingency plan that La Saia had just stoked within him. He first gave an overview of the City of Revelmoore, where he once held significant sway as a crime lord centuries ago. He believed that by taking advantage of his old reputation, he would be able to launch a conspiracy to ingratiate himself into the city's ruling council and acquire vast amounts of wealth; wealth he could use to support the never ending quest to challenge and destroy Lolth.   Veszaltyrr also spoke of his recent initiative to investigate lost prophecies and forgotten omens, stating that he had found an interesting one concerning a 'warrior in white' whose rising star would shine a light on interesting familial relationships amongst the divine; he explained no more than this, but it was clear that he believed it would help him defeat Lolth in some way.   However, given that Melfina had ascended and still retained a good portion of her personality, Veszaltyrr was curious to lay out a third plan for the future. He staunchly denied any desire to attain any sort of true divinity, as he loathed the gods and their authority over mortal existence; however, he could not deny that such power would be incredibly useful, and he did not necessarily need to take such planar potency from a god.   Veszaltyrr showed La Saia two illusory images of two particular archdevils; Zariel, Archduke of the First Hell of Avernus, and Levistus, the Frozen Prince of the Fifth Hell of Stygia. The sorcerer proclaimed the archdevils to not be as powerful or invincible as they liked to proclaim themselves, and were that an opportunity to present itself, an attack on one of them might be beneficial to his cause.   To this end, Veszaltyrr proposed an 'alliance of nemeses' between himself and La Saia, in which she would aid him should the necessity of interfering with the affairs of the archdevils ever come to pass. He played upon what of Melfina still remained within the Frostmaiden, reminding her of her contention with Levistus. Hardly needing convincing, La Saia agreed to this alliance, calling Veszaltyrr 'master' one last time, before returning to her home plane. Now left alone, Veszaltyrr turned back to his meditations, planning the next few decades silently to himself.
Meanwhile, deep in the depths of the bitterly cold hell of Stygia, the newly-reformed devil Mendrion ascended the spire leading to the Tomb of Levistus and bowed before his archduke in reverence.   Levistus curse Mendrion's failure in the Taiga, as well as that of Cinderswift, and even bemoaned the loss of Avarice.
"YOUR DEFEAT? MY SERVANT, THIS IS A BURDEN SHARED. YOU HAVE FAILED ME. CINDERSWIFT FELL SHORT EVEN OF MY ABYSMALLY LOW EXPECTATIONS. EVEN AVARICE, EXEMPLARY AMONG HER FELLOW PATHETIC MORTALS, IS NOW BURIED IN THE SNOW OF STYGIA. AND ALL OF THIS WEIGHT, MENDRION, IT BEARS DOWN UPON ME AND MY TOMB. THE WEIGHT OF MY OWN FAILURE TO APPOINT WORTHY DELEGATES."
The Frozen Prince, however, stated that he was familiar with loss and defeat, and that he would never surrender in the face of them. He bade his minion to seek believers of the Cult of Levistus on the material world of Lloegyr, telling him specifically to seek 'the rising black sun'. He warned that this was Mendrion's last chance to remain in his good graces, and then allowed his servant to go free.
"BUT AS LONG AS STYGIA STANDS, AS LONG AS MY HEART BEATS IN MY FROZEN CHEST, THE GAME IS NOT OVER, MENDRION. AND YOU MAY SERVE ME YET. ASMODEUS HAS IT WITHIN HIS POWER TO UNMAKE ME. I WOULD BE A FOOL TO PRETEND OTHERWISE. YET HE MUST KEEP THIS POWER AT BAY, FOR IF HE WERE TO ERADICATE AN ARCHDEVIL, WHAT MESSAGE WOULD THAT SEND TO THOSE THAT REMAIN? THAT THEY ARE EXPENDABLE, TARGETS WITHIN HIS SIGHTS. ASMODEUS CANNOT AFFORD THE UPRISING THAT SUCH A REALIZATION WOULD BRING TO BEAR. AND THUS, THE SILVER LINING.   "I WILL ADMIT SHAME, FOR IT IS MY CURSE. I WILL ADMIT DEFEAT, FOR WITHOUT IT I WOULD ALREADY RULE OVER ALL OF BAATOR. BUT ACCEPTANCE? SUBMISSION? THEY HAVE NO PLACE IN MY WORLD. SO YOU ARE CALLED UPON ONCE MORE.   "THERE REMAIN SERVANTS OF MINE THROUGHOUT THE MATERIAL. THERE ARE ALWAYS THOSE WHO DESIRE TO EMULATE MY MAGNIFICENCE, TO BETRAY AND DECEIVE THEIR WAYS TO POWER. I COMMAND YOU TO MAKE YOURSELF KNOWN TO THE BELIEVERS WHO SEEK THE BLACK SUN. IT SHALL RISE AT THE FORETOLD HOUR, AND BRING WITH IT A SLICE OF PARADISE TO THE HELLS. YOU KNOW OF WHICH OMEN I SPEAK.   "WE MUST USE THIS TO OUR ADVANTAGE. IN HER SENTIMENTALITY, IN HER PITIFUL OBSESSION WITH THE PAST, MY DEAR 'SISTER' HAS GIVEN US AN OPPORTUNITY. IN MERE DECADES SHALL THE VERY HELLS QUAKE…   "...AND NONE OTHER THAN LEVISTUS, THE LORD OF STYGIA, SHALL DELIVER THE STRIKE THAT SHAKES THE FOUNDATIONS. NOW GO. KNOW THAT THIS IS YOUR LAST CHANCE."
Levistus then mocked the frozen forms of Nevara and Minerva that were imprisoned near his throne, even though they could not respond from their icy coffins. He warned them that their efforts had been for naught, and that he would one day be free at long last to wreak havoc on those that had aided in his imprisonment.
"ANTECEDENT IRIOLARTHAS. HIGH EVOKER NEVARA. HOW FAR YOU HAVE FALLEN FROM THE HEIGHTS OF OLD HYPERBOREA. SCRAPING THE HEAVENS ABOVE, ONLY TO FALL TO THE FROZEN HELL BELOW. A TALE AS OLD AS TIME, THEY SAY.   "YOU SHOULD KNOW THAT THIS IS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE BEEN FOILED. NOR WILL IT BE THE LAST, I AM CERTAIN. THE METAPHORICAL DECK IS STACKED AGAINST ME, SO TO SPEAK. BUT ALL IT TAKES IS ONE DAY… ONE FORTUITOUS DAY. WHEN THAT MOMENT COMES, I SHALL BREAK FREE AND VISIT MY UNENDING FURY UPON ALL THOSE THAT DARED TO IMPRISON ME. MY ENEMIES MUST BE VIGILANT EACH AND EVERY DAY… WHEREAS I ONLY NEED TO SUCCEED ONCE.   "AND IN THE WAKE OF MY LIBERATION, YOU WILL KNOW THAT ALL OF YOUR REBELLIONS, YOUR STUNT WITH THE MYTHALLAR, THE ETERNAL WINTER, EVEN THE LONESOME FEW AND THEIR INSUFFERABLE THRASHING… IT WAS ALL FOR NAUGHT. LET THAT THOUGHT KEEP YOU COMPANY AS YOU LANGUISH HERE ASIDE MY THRONE. KNOW BUT A FRACTION OF THE AGONY THAT I ENDURE EACH AND EVERY WAKING MOMENT."
As Levistus laughed and mocked his captives, the two women, locked in their icy repose, managed to make eye contact. This alone was enough for the two, who had spent so much time apart. Through their long-overdue reunion, even in such a dismal place like Stygia, they were finally together once more. As they locked eyes, the foundations of the ice containing Nevara and Minerva began to crack, ever so slowly…   But such a tale of devotion and defiance will be told in time. For while Stygia remains frozen, the Taiga has begun to thaw, and the people of the Snowdrift Flatlands look to the horizon with unfamiliar hope in their hearts. Seven decades shall pass before destruction once again visits the Taiga, but that in itself is a tale best told by another. As the years pass, the echoes of the Lonesome Few reverberate against the confines of time, their actions forever leaving a mark upon the cold north.

Epilogue

So did the Everlasting Rime come to an end, and the Snowdrift Flatlands survived in spite of overwhelming darkness and despair. The land's scars never healed, but its people eventually did recover and live fulfilling lives.   The lost towns of Whiteridge, Lystheim, Caer Sella, Vrath Keep, and Hole-in-the-Ice were not resettled by the survivors. Hartwick would eventually be abandoned as its people made their ways to Helgafel piece by piece. The ruins of these towns gathered snow silently, largely undisturbed for the next 70 years.   Little civilization remained in the cold expanse, with only the three towns of the Mirrored Reservoir, Storm's Call to the southwest, and Helgafel to the southeast remaining. Many survivors of the winter fled either to Helgafel or made for passes through the Dragon's Teeth Mountains to the west, seeking to settle in the town of Aspencove.   Tales of the Eternal Winter were spoken of by the Flatlanders rarely, for such memories carried great pain and suffering. The two dark years under La Saia's frozen fist faded into legend, with few recalling the finer details of the affair. However, the Lonesome Few remained heroes of tales in the region for centuries to come.   La Saia the Frostmaiden, made whole once again by the wizard Melfina Eres after making a crucial choice in the Court of Pharasma, returned to the pantheon quietly and reclusively. She remained a reticent goddess, akin to a divine hermit. Yet she retained a small circle of devoted followers, who held fast to their belief in the deadly beauty of the winter. La Saia's followers would forever know the cultists of Levistus as their mortal enemies.

Lystheim

Baptised in radiant dragonflame and leveled by the following rampage, Lystheim - once the largest settlement and center of authority in the Snowdrift Flatlands - was reduced to rubble and cinders. The remains of the chardalyn dragon, slain by the Lonesome Few in the city center, tainted the earth as they languished in silence, giving the whole area a bitter and sickening pallor.   The site where Lystheim once stood was thus never resettled. An initiative was led by survivors of the Rime to erect a monument to memorialize those lost in the Broken Blade invasion; afterwards, few ever returned to the area ever again.

Sheriff Markham Southwell

Sheriff of Lystheim

Markham Southwell laid down his sword after the Battle of Whiteridge. Even a career military man such as he had a difficult time dealing with the death he witnessed on that day. This was made worse by the demise of Speaker Duvessa Shane, whom he loved like a daughter, at the hands of the chardalyn dragon.   Thus did he swear to only use his hands to build and to mend for the remainder of his days. He became a handyman, having always been good with his hands. He worked well into his final years, building many houses and helping many youths put down their roots in the shadow of the Giving Tree. He would also eventually officiate the wedding of Dahlia Kaltro some years after the winter.   When Southwell finally passed, he left behind a legacy of a proud defender of the frontier folk. He served as an example that, even to the most battle-hardened of men, sometimes there was simply too much death to be dealt. The old sheriff was buried on the outskirts of Helgafel, his grave facing westward to the ruins of Lystheim, and upon it grew hale and hearty red flowers regardless of the season.

Scramzax & Vernon Braig

Proprietors of the Northlook & the Blue Clam

The two tavern keepers formerly of Lystheim and Whiteridge went into business together, opening an inn & tavern in the newly settled Helgafel. They initially had difficulty in deciding on a name for the place, but eventually settled on 'The Helgafel Inn', a simple title commemorating a silly memory of old Gleha tripping over the tavern's threshold.   Vernon Braig continued to pursue his lifelong hobby of fishing, the waters of the Valrua Sea proving a challenge compared to the Mirrored Reservoir where he was used to casting his line. Having Scramzax on deck to right the sails and weigh the anchor proved an indispensable boon, and soon the Helgafel Inn was full to bursting with trout fished from the sea's waters.   The gastronomic peculiarity of Vernon's invention, known as the 'burger', would eventually be taken south by folks leaving the Taiga. In the coming decades, many eateries throughout Lloegyr would come to know the culinary sorcery that was putting something in between two slices of bread.   The Helgafell Inn would eventually fall into the hands of others when its founders passed, but their laughter and jovial greetings would forever ring in the memories of its patrons.

Dannika Greysteel

Curious Cleric of Ioun

Dannika had accomplished her academic dream of penning a comprehensive almanac of a rare magical species of being. Yet when she looked upon her draft for the treatise on the chwingas, all she could think about was the droves of scholars and mages traveling north to seek out the little creatures. Disturbing their habitats, capturing them for experiments and other unsavory ends, and just generally being nuisances to the delicate, diminutive elementals.   Thus did Dannika briefly consider setting her notes ablaze and forgetting the entire affair. However, she eventually decided to bestow her notes to Tali, for she wished for the knowledge she had gathered to not go to waste.   After several years in the frozen north, Dannika finally decided to return to warmer climes, and made the trip back home to the kingdom of Oceanus. For the rest of her days, she would always impart to her students and colleagues the importance in seeking out the small and the easily missed throughout the forgotten corners of the world, for they had just as much a right to be known as did the fantastical beasts of legend.

Vicar Ambriel Zamphros

Pious Priest of Solanus

Vicar Ambriel Zamphros.png

Although he had little contact with the Lonesome Few, Vicar Zamphros was strongly affected by their actions. He had survived the Battle of Whiteridge and the Everlasting Rime alike, and when he witnessed the sun rise over the Taiga at long last, he took it as a holy revelation from Solanus herself.   The bitter cleric's faith was renewed that day, and so did he dedicate his life to ensuring his congregation would never forget the blessing visited upon them by their bright and shining goddess.

Khesen Verdusk

Snowstriding Ranger

"Old Man Khesen" was approached by Dahlia to lead her concept of a ranger's guild in Helgafel after he resettled in the region. Khesen was flattered, but instead insisted on following her lead. After all, she was the one who had gotten things done and helped to end the winter, not him.   Khesen served the Wardens in White for the remainder of his days. He was offered a place in the Via Venatori by Ivory Farrowbane, but Khesen wholeheartedly refused on account of his disdain for prolonging natural life through magical means.   When his twilight years began to dawn upon him, Khesen gathered his gear for one last excursion into the wilds and then headed beyond the mountains. He was never seen again.

Vrath Keep

Having been badly damaged by the chardalyn dragon's rampage, Vrath Keep's people soon abandoned it, leaving their incinerated homes behind in the shadow of the stout old fort.   Vrath Keep would continue to stand in this place, a ghost of its former glory, casting a pallor over the surrounding region. It would come to be spoken of in harsh whispers, with claims of it being haunted deterring many a potential explorer. These claims would eventually become truth, as many a foul presence sought to make the tower their lair throughout the years. Yet another cold and unforgiving corner of the Taiga had been born.

Nere

Young Man Captured by the Cult

Seeking forgiveness for helping the Cult (even though he was coerced), Nere hitched a ride out of Frostgale Taiga to find one of the great temples, where he hoped to cleanse his soul through service. Far to the south, Nere found a temple of Muir, where he became an acolyte and performed backbreaking labor as his penance.   Nere eventually impressed the clergy enough to see him given as a squire to a knight of Waymarch. Nere would excel at the training, eventually becoming a proud and long-serving paladin of Muir.   As a paladin, Nere made the journey overseas to the Kingdom of Mendev, where he joined the Crusaders there. He participated in the mass witch hunt that became the Third Mendevian Crusade, and in his fervor to root out demonic cultists, inspired by his horrid treatment in his youth, Nere became a feared inquisitor and close companion of Prelate Hulrun Shappok.   Nere would eventually perish in his fifties at the hands of Khorramzadeh the Storm King at the gates of Kenabres, becoming one of the first casualties of the Fourth Mendevian Crusade. He would be remembered for his merciless brutality and uncompromising severity, a far cry from the nervous boy rescued from the Knights of the Black Sword so long ago.

Fel Suparra

Disciple of Avarice

With the influence of the Lonesome Few at an all-time high following the end of the Everlasting Rime, the Snowdrift Flatlands quickly became an inhospitable place for disciples of Levistus. Fel Suparra, once the favored student of Avarice, managed to escape the notice of the remaining Ten-Towners after the Eternal Winter passed. Once aware that her master had perished, Fel fled south.   Fleeing from one cult of Levistus to another, Fel eventually gained the notice of her dread master himself. In his never ending quest to escape from the Frozen Throne and take revenge on those who imprisoned him, Levistus conscripted Fel to embark on a new plot; one that would take her to the first Hell of Avernus alongside the devil Mendrion, ordered to seek a weakness in the archdevil Zariel's defenses.   The conclusion of this infernal conspiracy remains a mystery yet to be uncovered.

Hartwick

The quiet forest town of Hartwick buckled under the strain of supporting the refugees in the nearby Camp Daybreak. When the Winter was ended and the camp was broken down, little remained in Hartwick to sustain its people. Many residents, even Speaker Buzzbubble, packed up their things and headed southeast, following the druid Gleha to the site that would become Helgafel.   The town was eventually completely abandoned and fell to ruin, though the forest thicket surrounding it would retain its name for decades to come.

Bombini & Prudence Buzzbubble

Kind Speaker of Hartwick & Traitorous Secretary of Three Streams

Bombini and all six of her children survived the Eternal Winter, which did little to mar the shine of her ever-present smile. Although she tried her best to persuade her neighbors to stay in Hartwick, she eventually accepted the reality of the situation, giving up her speakership and following them southeast to Helgafel.   The scent of her cinnamon cookies became a treasured part of walking through Helgafel's market, and so Bombini opened a small store - Bombini's Bombastic Bakery - where she would delight the palettes of many a sweet tooth for many years.   Prudence Tarkwold, reviled by her former neighbors in Three Streams for her role in the conspiracy headed by Naerth Maxildanaar of Mirlake, could no longer remain in the town she called home after she returned from Sunblight Fortress. She fled east to Camp Daybreak, remaining quiet and out-of-the-way until the Winter came to an end. Content to stay on the move, she made her way to Helgafel with the other refugees, intending to seize any opportunity to flee south.   As she waited and avoided making too big of a fuss, Prudence became a regular at a newly opened bakery in the small town. Each time she visited the store for a plate of coffee biscuits, she found fewer reasons to leave, and more reasons to linger and chat with the bakery's owner who made her heart flutter and her troubles seem far away.   Bombini and Prudence would shock their neighbors when their engagement was announced. The two were wedded on a crisp autumn evening, bringing them much happiness (and giving Bombini a much-needed hand in raising her six children).   Bombini and Prudence lived well into their second centuries, staying together throughout it all. Prudence stayed in lock-step with Bombini while working to redeem herself, and was remembered not as a traitor, but as a devoted stepmother. The two would tell all of their nearly twenty grandchildren tales of the Lonesome Few, regaling them with stories of heroism and of cookies enjoyed between grand quests.

Whiteridge

Whiteridge, the grave of dozens of warriors from both the Ten Towns and beyond, was never resettled. Few were able to stomach the idea of returning to sift through the ruins, which were eventually completely abandoned.   Nearly 70 years following the Everlasting Rime, a great quake rocked the region, unveiling a lattice of clockwork gears hanging over lava beneath the ruins. The caves below were rumored to have become the home of a dragon and a clan of kobolds, who worshipped a mysterious armored humanoid woman that they refer to as 'Tin Tin'. Such a place would hold secrets and treasures to be claimed only by the most daring of adventurers.

Caer Sella

The terraces of Caer Sella no longer bore homes and stores, but only graves and ruins in the wake of the chardalyn dragon attack. Several attempts were made to reclaim the area, but few were the settlers that wished to make their way there rather than to make the remainder of the trip to the nearby towns on the Mirrored Reservoir. Eventually, much like several of its neighbors, Caer Sella was completely abandoned.

Trovus

Speaker of Caer Sella

After surviving the Battle of Whiteridge and seeing the devastation inflicted on his people, Trovus felt an intense guilt over his dereliction of duty brought on by his dependence on spirits and ale. Trovus gave up the bottle and never drank again, though the tremors in his hands on the hardest nights would never go away.   With no town over which to remain Speaker for, Trovus gave up his title and joined Sheriff Southwell in venturing to Helgafel, where he put down roots and tried to live a better life as a much less important man. He served Helgafel as a strong pair of arms at the docks for the remainder of his days.

Atenas Swift & Jartha Farzassh

Expoditioner of the Far North & Procurer of Memories

Atenas went on one final expedition with his partner Jartha after the end of the Eternal Winter, moving north to see the newly uncovered Hollowfaust and the place where the Taiga's fate was decided once and for all.   He then did as he promised the Lonesome Few, and wrote a series of books on the Eternal Winter and the many strange places hidden in the Taiga - the tales of which were often relayed to him by Ragna, Alith, and Dahlia.   Atenas passed away five years after the winter's end in the summer of 3452. He was buried at the peak of Famrial Mountain by his beloved Jartha, who went on to move south to fulfill his promise of having his late husband's works published.   After Atenas' passing, Jartha had a difficult time deciding what to do after seeing the books of the Rime publishing. Eventually he decided to remain in and settle in the south, taking up residence in the great city of Revelmoore. He went on to found an institution known as the Frostgale Taiga Museum in the city's Southern Ward, where he held many first edition copies of Atenas' works and other artifacts related to the Taiga and the Eternal Winter.   Thanks to Jarthas's efforts, Atenas' books continued to circulate in the decades that passed, eventually inspiring a young Reveler tabaxi to take up his own writing career.

Honeybrook

A town was never rebuilt around the old mead hall of Honeybrook; only a small trading post sprung up to sustain the mead trade and to have supplies delivered to its workers. Despite this, the old mead hall remained busy well into the future decades. During the eclipse of 3518, the hall bottled a special "Dark Sister Reserve" mead, which became a famous vintage greatly sought after all throughout Lloegyr.

Olivessa Untapoor

Speaker of Honeybrook

Olivessa gave up the title of Speaker, reasoning that Honeybrook didn't constitute a full town any longer. She ran the Mead Hall for the rest of her days, never marrying or having children.   With the most notable mead hall under her purview, she had all the means to become rich once the Honeybrook mead increased in demand. Instead, Olivessa mostly spread her coin around the rest of the Taiga to assist in reconstruction. She kept a house in Three Streams, but rarely visited.

Shandar Froth

Shady Logger

After being freed from Sunblight Fortress, Shandar tried to convince Naerth Maxildanaar to return to his plot to take over all three towns of the Mirrored Reservoir. When Naerth refused, Shandar left in disgust and took his gang of loggers south, where they became bandits.   Shandar's men preyed on travelers making their way north to visit the Taiga for the first time since the end of the Eternal Winter. However, after one too many travelers from Helgafel went missing, the bandit crew was hunted down and slain to the last man by a merciless pair of rangers.

Hole-in-the-Ice

Already unremarkable and oft-forgotten among its neighbors, Hole-in-the-Ice died a final death when the chardalyn dragon razed it to the ground. Few records of the town survive, and what little writings remain speak of a small town full of embittered recluses.

Mirlake

The largest remaining town in the Snowdrift Flatlands following La Saia's brutal two-year winter, Mirlake prospered in the renewed summer months and remained settled well into the future decades. The town acted as a leader amongst its neighbors on the Mirrored Reservoir, and headed the effort to help the refugees of Camp Daybreak settle in the southeast.   Once known as a den of thieves and inequity, Mirlake would shed its sordid reputation, largely in thanks to Speaker Naerth Maxildanaar's reformed attitude and leadership.

Naerth Maxildanaar

Speaker of Mirlake

Although bruised and beaten following his imprisonment by the duergar of Sunblight Fortress, Naerth returned to the role of speaker with a renewed interest in saving his people from the winter, rather than just using them as bargaining chips in a gambit to survive. His survival stoked in him a desire to turn over a new leaf and not waste the second change he was given by the Lonesome Few.   Even after losing his left leg to infection following the torture suffered at the hands of the duergar, Naerth played the part of a diligent statesman and logistician, overseeing the donation of significant resources to Helgafel's construction.   Naerth would never marry, and would eventually turn over his speakership to Keegan Velryn. He lived the remainder of his life as the proprietor of an orphanage, helping to rescue what young ones he could from a harsh childhood as he had suffered.

Garret & Keegan Velryn (and Boy)

Outdoorsmen Couple of Mirlake (and dog)

Being a lifelong resident of Mirlake and a man known to many of his fellow fishermen of the Mirrored Reservoir, Keegan was a natural candidate for Speaker of Mirlake after his predecessor Naerth stepped down. Keegan accepted his opportunity somewhat reluctantly, but performed his duty diligently. His priorities would always be the safety and welfare of the fishers, scrimshanders, and hunters of the town, for they were its lifeblood.   Garret had little patience for the politics his husband settled into, and continued his wilderness wanderings alongside his beloved hound, Boy. He would make frequent forays to Helgafel in the southeast, becoming a founding member of the Wardens in White, though he would never settle in the town and would always return home when his duties were complete. Boy would live to the ripe old age of 16, and his descendants continued to pull sleds throughout the taiga well over a century after his passing.   Serving as an intermediary between the Wardens and the newly founded Tempered Blade due to his friendship with Ragna and Soley, Garret would help the barbarian tribe settle their new lands by pathfinding and foraging for resources. Many a stronghold of the Tempered Blade had their foundations laid under the direction of Garret Velryn, who went down in tribal memory as a stout ally and loyal friend who always paid his debts.

Perilou Fishfinger

Afflicted Acolyte of Mick O'Delving

Perilou was given a new lease on life after being saved from the deadly yetis of Famrial Mountain, and decided to dedicate herself entirely to her faith in the wake of her rescue. She founded a temple of Mick O'Delving in Mirlake, which became a social hub for the halfling folk of the region. As of the eclipse of 3518, Sister Fishfinger remained the high priestess of the temple.

Icemeet

The small and meager town of Icemeet somehow survived throughout the terrible Eternal Winter, largely in thanks to aid received from the nearby Mirlake and Speaker Maxildanaar. The town changed very little over the following seven decades, becoming something of a relic of the Taiga's past. Its fishermen continued to prowl the reservoir for their daily catch as if nothing had ever happened.

Dorbulgruf Shalescar

Speaker of Icemeet

Speaker Shalescar did not live long after the end of the Eternal Winter, finally succumbing to the frailty of mind brought upon him by old age. He was remembered fondly by his people, even as age took his wits from him; less could be said of his replacement, Grynsk Berylbore, whose taciturn manners were a far cry from his predecessor's renowned friendliness.

Grynsk Berylbore

Gruff Fisherman

Grynsk took the position of Icemeet's Speaker after Dorbulgruf's death, earning respect for his business sense and management skills. However, his gruff and severe demeanor won him few friends.   Speaker Berylbore ran the town with a heavy hand, demanding the very best from their fishermen and giving little care to other things. Icemeet prospered economically under his leadership, but grew little in the way of progress or cultural advancement.

The Stumblestout Brothers

Of the Five Taverns

Despite the laws of economics and all common sense, all five of the Stumblestout taverns remained open for at least the next seven decades, all run by the sons of each Stumblestout; each who bore his father's name as a junior.   Long as the Stumblestouts were residents of the small town, its people would never go thirsty; or with a peaceful night's rest free of brotherly arguments, for that matter.

Cora Mulphoon

Huarwar Mulphoon's Mother

Once news of her son Huarwar's demise reached her, Cora Mulphoon became a devastated recluse. She closed her inn and shut herself from the outside world, rarely speaking to anyone ever again. Eventually her house was abandoned, leaving no clue to her fate. All that was left was a tarnished locket, laid upon the battlefield that scarred the ruins of Whiteridge.

Portraits

THE LONESOME FEW

Ragna Alfsbur - A gigantic barbarian and hero of the Frostgale Taiga, who founded the Tempered Blade tribe upon the ashes of the Broken Blade that were left behind in its wake. Ragna dedicated the year since the end of the Eternal Winter to building a better tribe than that of their father - one that does not treasure only war and plunder, but also cooperation, individuality, and memory.
Alithkav - A githyanki artificer and 'daughter' of the githyanki god-queen, the lich Vlaakith - but most importantly, a famed hero to the people of the Snowdrift Flatlands. The year following her adventure had been spent in the company of friends and survivors of La Saia's icy crusade, but she eventually accepted that her destiny awaited her in the stars of Realmspace.
Melfina Eres - Most mysterious of the three heroes of the Taiga, Melfina was frozen and sealed away in the lost undercity of Ythryn. However, by way of old Hyperborean magics, she was able to project an illusory image of herself out to the Taiga, where could spend time, even incorporeally, with those she loved. However, these visits grew shorter and more infrequent over the years, until Melfina eventually faded away for the last time.
Peanut & Blamo - Alith's beloved sidekick, Peanut is a miniature giant space hamster of uncommon intelligence and bravery. She became the pilot of Alith's automaton Blamo, controlling it from within a small hermetically sealed cockpit in its center. Together with her owner, Peanut's destiny is to become an unusually potent - and small - member of the fight against Vlaakith's tyranny.

GUEST PLAYER CHARACTERS

Melanie - A tiefling academic from the southern city of Revelmoore. Seeking her fortune and a breakthrough in her studies, she traveled to the far north to the Frostgale Taiga after the Everlasting Rime had ended, and eventually found a home there with the help of the Lonesome Few.

NON-PLAYER CHARACTERS

Dahlia Kaltro - A human ranger and longtime companion of the Lonesome Few. After aiding them in slaying the Frostmaiden and ending the Eternal Winter, Dahlia settled in the newly founded town of Helgafel and led the formation of the Wardens in White - a fellowship of rangers dedicated to protecting both the town and the natural world around it.
Scramzax - Once the proprietor of the Northlook in Lystheim, the black dragonborn Scramzax is now one of the two founding owners of Helgafel's largest and only inn - appropriately named the Helgafel Inn.
Vernon Braig - Formerly the owner of Whiteridge's Blue Clam tavern, Vernon brought his friendly demeanor and culinary expertise to the newly built Helgafel Inn, of which he is one of the two proprietors.
Doluma Sunblight - The daughter of the mad king Xardorok of the Sunblight Duergar. After spending little time mourning her father's demise, she has set out to seek new purpose while traveling with the Tempered Blade barbarians, all while spreading the good and intoxicating word of Brúni-Bári.
Dannika Greysteel - A half-elven researcher from the far southern sea-kingdom of Oceanus. After spending a year in the Taiga studying and living among the elusive chwingas, she plans to remain for just a while longer before returning home.
Chwingas - Small, friendly elemental spirits found in quiet corners of the Taiga. Thanks to the Lonesome Few, the scholar Dannika Greysteel learned much about their powers and behaviors.
Ivory Farrowbane - A blood hunter of the Via Venatori from the southern lands, Ivory has found a monster-hunting niche in the Taiga that she intends to fill with her newly founded blood hunter chapter - the Frozen Chorus. With new recruits and fresh blood to be had, her future seems laden with slaughter and fortune alike.
Haldric Eskeland - One of Ivory's new blood hunter recruits, Haldric is a former wealthy resident of Lystheim who lost everything in the chardalyn dragon attack, and chose to take the Hunter's Bane as the first step in his new life.
Anekia Keencarver Olga-Kalathi - A goliath of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains that underwent the Hunter's Bane as a test of her own physical fortitude. As a blood hunter, her strength exceeds even the legendary brawn of her kin.
Gelmund Dahl - A human man from Hartwick who once worked as a logger. After losing his friends and family to the rampage of the Thing in the Woods, Gelmund had little left to live for - making him a perfect recruit for Ivory's Frozen Chorus.
Norinthe Shadeveil - A human woman from an unknown place in the Frostgale Taiga. She speaks little - about her past or otherwise - but given that she underwent the potentially deadly Hunter's Bane, it is likely she has not lived a kind life.
Oarus Masthew - Once the town speaker of Whiteridge, Oarus took up the ranger's trade after his town's destruction and settled in Helgafel. He serves as one of the Wardens in White alongside Dahlia Kaltro, with whom he has become romantically involved.
Garret Velryn - A wilderness guide from Mirlake, Garret was saved from a crag cat attack by the Lonesome Few during the Eternal Winter. He now splits his time between serving as a Warden in White in Helgafel, and spending time with his husband Keegan back home in Mirlake.
Boy - Garret Velryn's faithful hound, whose keen nose led the Lonesome Few to his master before he could be slain by crag cats. An official member of the Wardens in White, Boy spends his days in canine bliss, hunting and trekking across the vast expanse of the Flatlands.
Khesen Verdusk - An old human ranger who once resided in Lystheim, acting as a scout and lookout for the town. He now serves the Wardens in White, happy to let Dahlia and the younger generation lead the way while he merely follows and advises.
Tali.png
Tali von Corthala - A half-Shadar-kai rogue and researcher from the southern city of Revelmoore. They befriended the Lonesome Few and traveled with them for some time, becoming quite close to Melfina. With Melfina's unfortunate fade precluding any hope of a long-term physical relationship, Tali has become quite melancholy. Still, they took up residence in Helgafel, where they planned to raise the silver wyrmling Meifft and learn the druid's craft from Gleha.
Gleha - An elderly firbolg met by Ragna and Melfina when they made their trek to Vrath Keep. After the death of her daughter Orizana, a frost druid and leader of the Frostmaiden's cult, Gleha helped the victims of the chardalyn dragon attack survive off the land, and then led them to the region where they would found the town of Helgafel in her name. She remains a quiet but motherly presence in the town, tending to the Giving Tree in the center of town and the dryad living within it.
Brynjar Siegsson - One of Ragna's remaining siblings. Bryn is a half-elven herbalist who has left behind the barbarian way of life to study the druid's craft under Gleha's tutelage.
Hathowyn - A dryad encountered by the Lonesome Few in the Caves of Hunger. After Ythryn's Mythallar fell silent, she began to slowly wither until rescued and transplanted to Helgafel by Gleha, where she became the core of the Giving Tree.
Thokgrim the Stormlord - An orc warrior and devotee of Gromm the Thunderer, who became chief of Storm's Call with the aid of his allies in the Lonesome Few. A shrewd leader and diplomat, he has led his people in assisting the people of Helgafel settle their new lands.
Ogolai Orcsplitter Thuunlakalaga - Chief of the Thuunlakalaga clan of goliaths, Ogolai was rescued by the Lonesome Few from Sunblight Fortress shortly before the chardalyn dragon's rampage. Her people have long been the enemies of the orcs, but she has worked towards making peace between their peoples by becoming one of Thokgrim's wives.
Atenas Swift - An explorer from Caer Sella, Atenas is getting on in years and can no longer go on his great expeditions like he used to. He has settled on penning an account of the Everlasting Rime, hoping to memorialize the tragedy for future generations.
Speaker Danneth Waylen - The Speaker of Three Streams and a steadfast ally of the Lonesome Few. After they aided him in recovering a hag's magic cauldron to feed his people, he became a driving political force in uniting the Ten Towns against the Broken Blade barbarians. He now leads the recovery efforts of the remaining settlements.
Captain Indra Waylen - Captain of Three Streams' militia. Shaken by her experience in the Everlasting Rime and at the Battle of Whiteridge, Indra was saved from despair by Danneth's friendship, which would eventually lead to courting and their subsequent marriage.
Speaker Naerth Maxildanaar - Speaker of Mirlake, Naerth was once a conniving man who saw malicious opportunity in the Rime's darkness. After being betrayed by his guard captain and being saved by the party from Sunblight Fortress, he turned over a new leaf and wholly dedicated himself to the well-being of his people.
Olivessa Untapoor - The former Speaker of Honeybrook, who won her position largely in thanks to the Lonesome Few and their assistance. With her town mostly destroyed, she has settled for simply running the surviving mead hall, sustaining the flow of the Taiga's favorite drink.
Trovus - The former Speaker of Caer Sella, Trovus was a bumbling alcoholic who cracked under the weight of the Winter. Following the destruction of his home, Trovus has sworn off the bottle entirely, instead working to help Helgafel lay its foundations.
Dzaan - A haughty necromancer and former associate of Avarice and Veszaltyrr, who was saved from stasis in Nevara's tower by the Lonesome Few. He now leads the initiative to restore and resettle the arcane city of Hollowfaust.
Bombini Buzzbubble - The former Speaker of Hartwick and a single mother of six, this halfling woman was the first Speaker that the Lonesome Few met during their journey. Now that her town has been largely abandoned, she has settled down as a baker in Helgafel, and has begun dating Prudence Tarkwold - much to the shock of those who know her.
Prudence Tarkwold - A halfling spy who covertly worked as a secretary in Three Streams under Speaker Naerth's direction. After their plans were foiled and she was rescued from Sunblight Fortress, Prudence intended to flee the Taiga, but ended up tied down by the undeniably charming Bombini Buzzbubble, whom most agree is a positive influence on Prudence's attitude.
Izobai - A goblin scoundrel and opportunist who was encountered trying to sell junk in Helgafel. Ragna admired her cunning nature and invited her to the Tempered Blade, which Izobai accepted after considering the potential profit margins.
Hew Mann - A trio of three kobolds (Holgi, Snorp, and Zilbo) who try to disguise themselves as a human in a tall trench coat. They were invited by Ragna to join the Tempered Blade, which they accepted after holding a vote.
Markham Southwell - Once the sherriff of Lystheim, Markham served as the commander of the Taiga's forces in the Battle of Whiteridge, and then again as one of the leaders of the refugees in Camp Daybreak. Having seen and lost much in the Eternal Winter, Markham has finally laid down his sword and retired to Helgafel, where he lives as a general handyman.
Valdís Siegsdóttir - One of Ragna's remaining siblings, Valdís has joined her sibling in the Tempered Blade tribe as the Jarl of the Hall of Ferd. Her duty is to guide the hunters and rangers of their people, and to teach survival techniques to their brethren.
Sóley Siegsdóttir, the Steel Wind - One of Ragna's remaining siblings, Sóley has likewise joined the Tempered Blade tribe. Once she has passed the Rite of the Frostmaiden as her initiation ritual, Sóley will be called upon as the Jarl of the Hall of Krig, leading the Tempered Blade's warriors.
Bjornhild Solvigsdóttir - A former favored warrior of King Siegmar, Bjornhild is one of several defectors to join Ragna's new Tempered Blade tribe, hoping to see a better future under new leadership.
Flynric Hayward - A halfling warrior from the destroyed town of Caer Sella. He seeks to join the Tempered Blade, and carries with him a deep anger within.
Aristea de Rada - Once something close to a noblewoman in Lystheim, Aristea has decided to join the Tempered Blade after losing all her kinfolk, and endeavors to live off the land rather than simply upon it.
Valley of Blossoms - A huntress of a tribe to the far north that barely evaded King Siegmar's conquest. Her people mostly succumbed to the Eternal Winter, bringing her to the Tempered Blade as she seeks a new family.
Large Luigi - A beholder bartender who owns and operates the Happy Beholder on the free interstellar port of Bral. He befriended Alith during her stay on the Rock of Bral, and helped to get her into contact with his old associate Dak'kon.
Captain N'ghathrod - A notorious mind flayer pirate who plunders the stars from its spelljammer, the Scavenger. Although seperated from any illithid hive mind, it remains quite malevolent and cruel.
Ar'eka - A githzerai monk and one of Dak'kon's comrades in the fight to unite the gith people. She aided him in capturing and interrogating Alith.
Shrazeg - A githzerai fighter and one of Dak'kon's subordinates aboard his spelljammer. He accompanied Ar'eka during their pursuit of Alith.
Dak'kon - An ancient and powerful githzerai zerth who once walked the planes with a fabled figure known only as the Nameless One. He is a devotee of the Circles of Zerthimon and a believer in the unification of the githzerai with their githyanki siblings - a cause to which he has recruited Alith.
La Saia, the Frostmaiden - The Goddess of Winter, Queen of Ice and Snow, reborn after fourteen years of absence from the pantheon. Melfina Eres' soul has shaped her new form as a more patient and reserved goddess than her previous incarnation - though she still retains a vicious edge, especially against the faithful of Levistus.
Veszaltyrr Oussndar - A brass-handed drow sorcerer who wields the ordered magic of Mechanus in his quest to annihilate Lolth, the Queen of Arachnids. Although he holds great disdain for the gods, he could not deny how much of Melfina he saw in the new La Saia, and forged an alliance with the deity that assured her assistance in any action he would take against the archdevil Levistus in the future.
Mendrion - A fallen angel turned Erinyes who manipulated Xardorok Sunblight into forging the chardalyn dragon as part of a plot to destabilize the Taiga. He was Levistus' primary servant in Frostgale, and his failure to capture the Mythallar of Ythryn has put him in a difficult position with his hateful master.
Levistus, Archdevil of Stygia - Lord of Baator's frozen fifth hell, Levistus is the most hated of all archdevils in the lower planes. In his endless plot to escape from his icy prison, he manipulated the archmages of Ythryn into empowering him, and then ordered his minions to seize the Mythallar several millennia later. However, his plans were foiled by the Lonesome Few twice over, earning them a powerful enemy for rest of existence.
Antecedent Minerva Iriolarthas - An archmage of ancient Hyperborea, who served as the overseer of the hidden undercity of Ythryn. Together with her lover Nevara, she attempted to destroy the Mythallar at the city's heart to stop the horrid practices that sustained it. Their failure sealed her fate, spurred Levistus to inflict her with lichdom, and drove Nevara to become one with La Saia and instigate the Everlasting Rime. Her soul is now held firmly in the depths of Stygia, alongside with her beloved at long last.
High Evoker Nevara - The former high evoker of Ythryn and the lover of Antecedent Minerva. After their dream of stopping Levistus' plan to escape via the use of the Mythallar ended in failure, Nevara embarked on a centuries-long quest to preserve her beloved Minerva and keep her from falling completely into Levistus' grasp. She merged with La Saia in this pursuit, and was eventually slain by the Lonesome Few over a millennia later. Divested of her divinity, Nevara is now held captive in Stygia, but with the small kindness of her dearest Minerva at her side.

Once feared as a demon from the lake, the Great Sizzan continued to swim the waters of the Mirrored Reservoir in concert with its many fishermen. It was known to sometimes rescue sailors and fishermen who had fallen overboard into the freezing waters below, saving them from otherwise certain death.

Three Streams

Three Streams remained settled for many decades after the winter, forging strong ties with its neighbor Mirlake. It saw a boom in population in the year 3448, as many refugees who had taken shelter there elected to stay instead of making their way to Helgafel.   The arrival of King Siegmar and his entourage at Three Streams became a legendary event passed down in the tales of ensuing generations. Three Streams would remain known as the place where the people of the Taiga first resisted the Broken Blade invasion.

Danneth & Indra Waylen

Speaker of Three Streams & Captain of the Militia

Danneth continued to hold his position after the invasion and the Everlasting Rime, and was remembered fondly as a gifted leader who did his utmost to keep his people and the refugees safe within the walls of Three Streams. He disagreed with assessment due to his role in abiding the mob-rule sacrifices to La Saia, but with years and wisdom came the ability to eventually forgive himself.   To honor their deeds, Danneth petitioned his neighboring town to erect a trio of statues depicting the Lonesome Few in Mirlake; a motion that was accepted.   Indra had a hard time living with herself after the passing of the Eternal Winter, feeling guilt over the living sacrifices she allowed to happen as captain of Three Stream's militia. As the sun rose, she suffered a crisis of conscience, made worse by survivor's guilt and the trauma she had sustained during the Battle of Whiteridge.   Pushed to the brink, Indra nearly took her own life, but the timely intervention of Speaker Danneth saved her life. The two grew close as Danneth helped Indra return to a stable mental state, doing so with regular visits and the encouragement of journaling and seeking faith in the more forgiving of the gods.   The two would eventually overstep their formerly professional involvement and eventually marry. Indra returned to and retained her position as the militia captain of Three Streams, while Danneth remained Speaker until succeeded by their only son.

Nymetra Myskyn

Proprietor of the Wet Trout

After La Saia was defeated, Nymetra did not relent in worshipping the Frostmaiden. She won few friends, as she maintained that those who perished in the Eternal Winter were weaklings that were culled by her goddesses' tests.   The Wet Trout's clientele rapidly diminished thanks to Nymetra's fading popularity. She was eventually driven out of town, but instead of heading south like many escapees of the Taiga, Nymetra instead decided to take an aimless path to the north. No word was ever received from her hence, and she was quickly forgotten.

Goliaths of the Taiga

The goliaths descended from their mountain homes to help the Ten-Towners rebuild as part of their debt to the Lonesome Few for saving their chieftain Ogolai.   They came into brief conflict with their old foes, the orcs of Storm's Call, but Thokgrim's diplomatic prowess saw an end to the clash. The two peoples would come to share the mountains they called home, supporting each other and coming to each other's aid in battle.

Ogolai Orcsplitter Thuunlakalaga

Chieftain of the Thuunlakalaga Goliaths

Ogolai challenged Thokgrim to one-on-one combat after her clan came into violent contact with his. She was defeated after a close duel, and her life was spared. The chieftain would eventually join Thokgrim in mending the rift between their peoples as they both aided their neighbors in rebuilding.   She participated in the battle of Aspencove with Thokgrim, and bonded with him through blood shared and shed in glorious battle. To symbolize their people's friendship, Ogolai became one of Thokgrim's several wives, but continued to serve in her capacity as a leader and warrior rather than that of a homebody.

Oyaminartok

Mysterious Wanderering Werebear

Many explorers and young barbarians inspired by the tale of Oyaminartok saving Ragna's life tried to find the elusive werebear, but none who purposefully sought her were ever successful in tracking her down. Oyaminartok was only sighted in the forgotten, quiet corners of the Taiga, saving the brave and the worthy from otherwise undeserved fates.   Each year on the day of their birth, Ragna would find a piece of rock from the peaks of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains amongst their possessions, left by a mysterious and unseen visitor.

Storm's Call

The orcish stronghold of Storm's Call prospered in the years following Thokgrim's victory and ascension as chieftain. The Stormcaller orcs remained in power well into the next century, as Thokgrim and his son Xunug led their people into a peaceful but proud existence in the frozen north.   The Anvil of Storms continued to produce miraculous works of forging, and its weapons were sought by adventurers far and wide who were brave enough to trek through the frozen wilds.

Thokgrim the Stormlord

Master of the Thundering Clouds

Thokgrim won region-wide fame by meeting Siegmar at the battle of Aspencove in 3449, where the barbarian king was finally slain for good. Although the deed was done through teamwork between Thokgrim and Ragna, the credit for slaying Siegmar is oft erroneously attributed to Thokgrim alone, whose thunderous displays of electric might captured many eyes and memories - more so than even his giant companion, it seemed.   Thokgrim took several wives and served as chieftain of Storm's Call until his final days. Despite his several lovers, he only fathered one son; Xunug, born late into Thokgrim's life.   Upon reaching his final years, Thokgrim ventured to the tallest peaks of the Dragon's Teeth mountains, where he conducted a grand ceremony to summon a great storm that consumed him and sent him to the side of Gromm the Thunderer in a blaze of fulgurous glory.   In many temples of the Thunderer, Thokgrim would be depicted in paintings and statues as one of Gromm's prophets for centuries to come, standing at the side of his god with maul in hand and victory in his eyes.

Duhngrave

With the deaths of Lords Bellen and Beren Blackhammer, morale in the dwarven hall of Duhngrave severely plummeted. Relations between the Blackhammer clan and the rest of the Snowdrift Flatlands greatly diminished, with Lord Barador taking an antagonistic and isolationist stance against the surfacers whom he held responsible for the deaths of his kinsmen.   Duhngrave would eventually seal itself off from the rest of the Taiga, never speaking nor trading with any outsiders. In the wake of this, many of Duhngrave's dwarven residents departed its walls, seeking a less dour and defeatist lifestyle than what was promised by their grieving leader.   Without its best and brightest to sustain it, Duhngrave eventually faltered and was abandoned with the span of a generation.

Barador Blackhammer

Lord of the Lost Hall

When Duhngrave was finally abandoned, Barador silently departed, sealing his hall permanently before venturing to the South on an unknown quest. He carried with him the curse of the Traitor Prince, of which only legends remain.   Rumors of a sullen dwarf sporting medallions in his beard were heard in the vicinity of the Duchy of Westmarch decades later, though none connected them to the fallen hall in the frozen north.

The Sunblight Duergar

With most of the Sunblight Clan slain by the Lonesome Few and the defenders of Whiteridge, Sunblight Fortress had little left to sustain it. Most of its deep trove of resources went towards constructing the chardalyn dragon, and with its destruction, much was lost.   The fortress was eventually abandoned, becoming infested with monsters over the decades. Few reasons to venture to its walls remained in the following decades.

Grandolpha Muzgardt

Former Guest of King Xardorok

With Xardorok's death, Grandolpha Muzgardt took control of what little was left of Sunblight Fortress, and sent Xardorok's sole surviving son into exile. She attempted to make the fortress into a stronghold, but it never became anything more than a far-flung trading outpost that depended on infrequent shipments from Gracklstugh to survive. She was all too happy to abandon it for other ventures.

The Caves of Hunger

The deadly caves winding beneath Hollowfaust that once provided passage to Ythryn continued to be infested with various monsters and roving undead, some of them escaping from the nearby Underdark passages or drawn to the cursed aura within the caves.   In their efforts to cleanse the foulness from the region surrounding Hollowfaust, the Tempered Blade Tribe came to use the Caves of Hunger as a sort of proving ground, where promising warriors could test their might while pursuing a good cause all the while. Although the way to Ythryn remains collapsed and impassible, it continues to emit a grim aura whe approached.

Hathowyn

Lonesome Dryad

Having become the heart of the Giving Tree, Hathowyn never had to feel loneliness again for the rest of her days. She would greet the villagers that visited her happily, if only silently, for decades to come, and was cared for with great patience by Gleha.   Eventually, Hathowyn ceased to emerge from her tree, falling completely silent after decades of gentle existence among the people of the village. It is unknown if she remained within when Helgafel was sacked by the Red Hand of Doom and the Giving Tree was put to the torch - but many who were present that day saw that the tree took an unusually long time to completely burn down, as if resisting the flames to the very end.

The Iron Golem Head

Eternally Angry

The iron golem head discovered in the Caves of Hunger was eventually claimed and moved from its confines by Ragna and their impressive strength. The head was carried to and mounted within Nevara's spire, intended to greet Alith whenever she would make use of the structure as a spelljammer dock. While being carried away, the iron golem's eyes repeatedly blinked an indication of 'no'.

The Tempered Blade Tribe

Forged into a wise and considerate leader through his time fighting the Everlasting Rime, Ragna wasted little time in bringing his dream of a successor tribe to the Broken Blade to fruition. The Tempered Blade arose from the ashes of war and memory, becoming a place for wanderers and outcasts from all walks of life. All were welcome, so long as they were willing to work for and support their fellow tribesfolk.   The people of the Taiga were understandably initially wary of the new barbarian tribe that began to stride the flatlands. However, this fear was greatly diminished by Ragna's influence and the positive contributions that the tribe immediately brought to the land, and soon the Tempered Blade were welcomed as friends and allies whenever they strode through the region that once held the Ten Towns.   While the Broken Blade, in its their ferocity and martial superiority, would go on to be remembered in the history books and in the bloody sagas, the Tempered Blade survived in a far more humble, meaningful sense - it continued to make its small corner of the world better, piece by piece, day by day, all whilst honoring the memory of the departed.

Valdís Siegsdóttir

One-Eyed Huntress, Jarl of Ferd

Outside of dedicated hunters and scouts, the former subjects of King Siegmar knew precious little about living off the land. They were raiders first, taking what they needed from those that could not stop them, settling only for feasting on the roving herds of elk and reindeer when times were hard. As the Jarl of Ferd, this dependency on warfare and pillaging was Valdís' first and greatest challenge.   Following Valdís' example, the tribe learned to adopt techniques of food conservation and preservation, bringing them sustenance and vigor on long nomadic journeys. The Jarl of Ferd also forged strong ties to the Wardens in White of Helgafel, who shared a similar philosophy to Valdís' view of nature and hunting. Valdís would go on to be a long-time companion and friend of Dahlia Kaltro, both considering the other to be the finest ranger to stalk the snowbanks.   Valdís would never marry nor bear any progeny, but her many students were like children to her. Guiding them and assuring the prosperity of the Tempered Blade became her greatest joy, as it gave meaning to the skills that had long been overlooked in the Broken Blade.   By the time Valdís retired and gave up her title as Jarl, she had already picked out a successor far in advance. She continued to travel with the tribe in her final years, imparting wisdom and guidance to hunters young and old. When she finally passed in peace, her funeral pyre was lit atop the peak of the Famrial Mountain, and its brilliant flames were spied by observors from miles away; one last act of guidance from the One-Eyed Huntress.

Sóley Siegsdóttir

The Steel Wind, Jarl of Krig

The Everlasting Rime shattered Sóley's rather naive view of the world and of the Broken Blade. Where she once saw a righteous band of song-worthy warriors marching to preserve their way of life, all she saw after the Battle of Whiteridge was bloodstained snow and funeral pyres gone cold. When her time to undertake her rite of passage in the Tempered Blade came about, it was with determination and unusual solemnity.   The Rite of the Frostmaiden was a positive influence on the young warrior, who found glory and learning in equal measure while on the journey. She took the position of the Jarl of Krig soon after, and dedicated herself wholly to the martial perfection of the tribe. There was one aspect of the Broken Blade that was not a lie; they were the finest warriors of the Taiga, and this was a tradition Sóley intended to enshrine in her teachings forever.   As a warleader and mentor, Sóley focused on emphasizing unusual combat styles and bringing out the existing qualities of her students, rather than only cultivating new ones that fit some sort of mold. Her own unorthodox style, the Steel Wind Three-Axe style, would be taught to her descendants, relatives, and many brave members of the Hall of Krig throughout the years.   It took some time for Sóley and Ragna's relationship to truly heal after the trauma that Siegmar's invasion brought upon the both of them. Once the barrier of tragedy was broken, however, the two were once again inseperable, and Sóley accompanied her sibling on many a trek to the unknown wilds. By the time of the Dark Sister Eclipse of 3517, Sóley remained the Jarl of Krig while in the midst of her venerable eighth decade - and she remained just as terrifying as the little firebrand she once was.

Hew Mann

Three Heads are Possibly, but not Definitely, Better than One

Holgi, Zilbo, and Snorp initially had trouble contributing to the Tempered Blade. They always insisted on acting together as a unit, often to the detriment of their collective coordination and agility. Yet instead of discouraging this odd approach to combat and life in general, the folk of the Tempered Blade recognized how deeply the trio relied on each other.   It was thus that Sóley of the Hall of Krig took the trio under her wing. No stranger to unconventional fighting styles, Sóley helped the kobolds work with, instead of against, their uncanny ability to remain astride each other in harried situations. Hew Mann became a perplexing, yet surprisingly deadly combatant, proving the old adage true; if you want something done right, send three kobolds stacked on top of one another in a trench coat to do it for you.

Hollowfaust

With the undercity of Ythryn fallen silent and deep into the earth, the old city above became just as mundane as any other. Under the direction of the necromancer Dzaan, Hollowfaust drew to it many scholars and arcane academics. With necromancy being widely reviled and even outright criminalized in much of the civilized world, these mages convened to create a place in which the magic of death itself could be put to more practical and constructive uses.   The City continues to stand in the far north, a beacon of opportunity for those wishing to delve into the secrets of undeath under watchful eyes. Although a shadow of the Hyperborean wizard's paradise that it once was in millennia past, the city once again thrummed with magic and sorcery - a sign of life in this place of death, at long last.

Dzaan

The Ethical Necromancer

The very moment that he learned of the release of Hollowfaust from La Saia's great glacier, Dzaan embarked on a journey to the far north to explore the city that had long captured his fascination. The necromancer was critical in the city's recovery as he led the exploration, research, and resettlement efforts.   Dzaan and the colleagues that he attracted to his cause soon declared Hollowfaust reborn as an independent city-state, a place of necromancers, for necromancers. The wizards of Hollowfaust dedicated their necromantic works to ethical and practical practices, creating a curious culture that embraced both the joy of life and the inevitability of death.   As an archmage of Hollowfaust, Dzaan took on dozens of students and spread his dream of a necromancer's sanctuary. However, his ambition eventually caught up with him; in an effort to invent a reasonably moral method of attaining lichdom without indulging in vile practices like soul sacrifice and outright murder, Dzaan's spells went horribly awry. It took several weeks for the custodians to clean the dust particles that were once Dzaan from every inch of his office.   Even still, he remained fondly remembered by the people of new Hollowfaust; even if only through rose-tinted glasses that glossed over his arrogant and egotistical behavior.

Significant Figures

Many were those who crossed paths with the Lonesome Few; some legends, some friends and some foes - and due to this crossing, their destinies were forever altered, sending ripples of fate and consequence far beyond the stars themselves.

Gleha

Mother of Helgafel

Gleha remained within Helgafel, acting as a spiritual guide and a kind motherly figure to her people. Though many tried to name her mayor of the town, she refused each and every time, instead preferring to tend to the Giving Tree and to heal the ill.   Although she had claimed that she had long since made peace with her daughter Orizana's allegiance with the Frostmaiden and eventual death, many saw that Gleha cared for the Giving Tree in the same manner of making an apology to someone long since lost.   The old firbolg would eventually meet her end seventy years after the Everlasting Rime's conclusion, being slain by the Red Hand of Doom in the shade of her beloved tree. Yet she faced even this end with grace and conviction, content to return to the very earth that had sustained her for so long.

Kith'rak Gen'a'as

Faithful of the Lich-Queen

Eternally loyal to his queen, Gen'a'as returned to Tu'narath and immediately reported for duty while simultaneously submitting himself for punishment over allowing himself to be trapped in La Saia's domain.   To his eternal relief, Vlaakith spared the Kith'rak any such punishment, and even commended him for the slaying of a great and powerful elder brain in the confines of the Caves of Hunger. For his service, Vlaakith conferred the reward of ascension to Gen'a'as, who gratefully accepted.   In the wake of his ascension, Gen'a'as would become one with his queen - in a damningly literal sense - another loyal soldier consumed to sustain Vlaakith's unlife.

Vlaakith CLXVII

God-Queen of the Githyanki

Although the loss of one of her 'daughters' was a detriment against Queen Vlaakith's plans, the truth of the matter is that it was but one of many crises that she had to face at all times in her role as a ruler. Thus, she did as she always had; she assigned the issue to worthy subordinates and turned her gaze to more pressing matters on the astral horizons.   Alith's departure and encounter with Dak'kon was just one of many seeds planted, one among a grove of attempts to end Vlaakith's tyranny and remove her from power. But would this fresh sapling grow to fruition? Or would it wither and die like so many others?

Angajuk

Great Whale of the Valrua

Angajuk, safe beneath the waters of the Valrua, truly saw little difference between the Eternal Winter and the summers that followed it. Beholden to none, he continued to prowl the sea as he always had. As the Sapphire Isle grew silent following the Frostmaiden's first demise, he had even fewer reasons to make the journey to and fro.   Tales of a great white whale with a ship strapped to his back would continue to be shared among sailors of the Valura for decades to come, though none could claim to have ever spoken to it as the Lonesome Few did.

Arveiaturace

Ancient Predator of the Taiga

The battle against La Saia and escape from Ythryn reinvigorated the ancient dragon Arveiaturace, who had long since slowed down in her old age. With victory fresh in her mind, she became a common sight in the skies of the Taiga, bringing terror - but never any real harm - to any villager who laid eyes upon her.   Fourteen years after the Eternal Winter's conclusion, Arveiaturace suddenly disappeared. None know what became of her; however, the faithful of the reborn La Saia would soon begin to depict their goddess astride a great white dragon in their artistic renderings.

Brynjar Siegsson

Student of the Earth

Brynjar became a prodigious herbalist and druid under Gleha's tutelage, and felt truly at home for the first time in many a year. However, as age began to creep into his bones, he felt as though his talents would be better put to use in a less peaceful, less fortunate environment, where people would truly need his healing abilities.   After the dryad Hathowyn finally fell silent, Brynjar planned to take a seed from the Giving Tree and depart from Helgafel to seek a new land in which to sow his own grove. He thanked Gleha for all she had done, and then prepared to make his way to the Tempered Blade's holdings to confer with Ragna on which places might require his druidic expertise.   These plans were interrupted, however, by the arrival of the Red Hand of Doom in the year 3517. With an overwhelming force bearing down upon his home with superior arms and raging fires, Brynjar took up his spear and rushed to the front lines to buy some time for the weak and infirm to escape.   On the once-peaceful snowfields of Helgafel, the gentle herbalist Brynjar met a warrior's death worthy of Valhalla.

Ivory Farrowbane

Conductor of the Frozen Chorus

Ivory grew fond of the Taiga after the Endless Winter was brought to a close, and with ferocious monsters becoming active once again, she found easy work for one of her talents.   Having desired to build her own chapter since her own party was wiped out by remorhaz, Ivory recruited a number of brigands and other desperate fighters to undergo the Hunter's Bane. With a small coterie of newly initiated Blood Hunters, Ivory founded the Frozen Chorus chapter, which came to dominate the monster hunting trade in the Taiga. She took a particular favor to her chosen apprentice, the red dragonborn Ashera Thrann.   The headquarters of the Frozen Chorus, a heavily fortified cave in the southern hills, would eventually become known as the Ivory Bastion in her honor. Ivory would remain the chapter master well into the years preceding the Dark Sister eclipse, bringing death to whatever the Taiga's residents paid her well enough to slay.

King Siegmar, the Broken Blade

High King of the Barbarians

King Siegmar's indomitability in combat was an undeniable strength, but his defeat at Whiteridge soon revealed the flaw that accompanied it; Siegmar relied on war, strife, and conquest to unite his people under his rule, and cared little to govern elsewise. Seeing that refraining from making another push south would spell the end of his reign, Siegmar spent the whole of 3448 gathering his followers, subjugating smaller tribes of the far north, and forging weapons of war.   Once the Broken Blade's strength was restored, the warlord known as 'Groghmir' to the orcs resumed raids on the settlements of the Taiga as his army marched south to Aspencove. Many were the settlements that could not resist the charge of the barbarians, and many fled to the safety of Aspencove where they awaited their doom at Siegmar's hands.   Believing his return to glory to be within his grasp at long last, Siegmar laid siege to Aspencove with the full might of his forces. However, he encountered greater resistance than he dared hope for; the people of Aspencove were joined by the orcs of Storm's Call, the Goliaths of the Dragon's Teeth Mountains, and the barbarians of the newly founded Tempered Blade tribe.   Seeing his remaining children on the side of the defenders infuriated Siegmar, and he refused to turn tail and run when faced with a greater force than expected. The Broken Blade's last charge resulted in a terrible and bloody battle in which many brave and powerful warriors fell to their equals in battle.   King Siegmar found not victory at Aspencove, but death. In the center of the conflict, in a circle of blood and death, Siegmar clashed with his child Ragna and their ally, Thokgrim the Stormlord. Their battle was one for the ages, and in his last moments, Siegmar exemplified himself as a nearly peerless warrior, bringing his two opponents to the limits of their strength.   Yet this was not enough, and as he realized that his forces had been slain to the last man, Siegmar was at last felled by a combined strike from Ragna and Thokgrim. As his final act while he lay dying, Siegmar took Gungnir, the Broken Blade after which his barbarian empire was named, and shattered it in his grasp. In his words, there would be no Broken Blade without its king.   So was the Broken Blade finally, truly broken and buried. King Siegmar was burned upon a pyre in the tradition of his ancestors, and his ashes scattered at an unmarked, forgotten site. History would forget the great warrior whose blade knew few equals, and would only recall tales of the evil warlord whose armies were broken at the gates of Aspencove.

Mendrion

Spiteful Scion of Heaven

Although he had succeeded in permanently slaying his angelic brother Seraphiel, whose essence was near-totally subsumed by the chardalyn dragon, the fallen angel Mendrion could only look back on the Frostmaiden affair as a complete and total defeat. His master remained imprisoned, his chance to grasp true divinity taken from him, and they ended their conspiracy with more enemies than they had before.   It was thus that Mendrion embarked on what could very well be his final mission in the service of Levistus. Success meant a mere pardon for his previous failure, while defeat would spell a fate worse than total obliteration.   Every devil is far too ambitious to settle for being reduced to a mere lemure for failing to meet the expectations of their betters, and Mendrion was prideful even among his kin. With his wicked halberd in hand, Mendrion returned to the material world once more, seeking the omen of the black sun spoken of by his lord and master. Woe to those who stand in his way, for the devil now fights to forestall oblivion itself.

Levistus, Frozen Prince of Stygia

Archduke of All Hatreds

Little could be said of Levistus that was not known to his enemies. The archdevil was the very model of an unchanging being, eternally possessed by a cosmically unfathomable anger, shuttered in a tomb forged by his greatest enemy that hatred alone could not shatter.   The Eternal Rime was a loss for him, yes, but it was only one of a tapestry. To admit his final defeat would be to unmake Levistus' very nature. Thus did the archdevil sit, simmer, and plot - for what else was he to do, imprisoned as he was?   In nearly eighty years' time, the ice of Stygia began to creep up the waters of the River Styx, reaching the threshold of the first hell of Avernus. Yet another Stygian reckoning had come, with the Frozen Prince and his blinding malice at the helm.

Tali & Meifft

Walker of the Threshold & Son of Silvered Dreams

True to their word, Tali remained in the Taiga and conducted half-hearted research for fourteen painfully short years. The true desire at the heart of their stay was to maintain a connection to Melfina so that she would never be alone, and Tali wished to be there for her when the end came. All the while, they remained in contact with Ragna, Alith, and Dahlia, leaning on their friendship in difficult times.   Under Gleha's tutelage, Tali learned to use her connection with the Shadowfell in harmony with nature, not in spite of it. Death was but a part of life, and in understanding this, Tali came to appreciate her shadar-kai half for the first time in all their years. At last, she achieved her lifelong dream to become a druid, deepening her connection to the natural world beyond mere words recorded in academic notes.   While fulfillment of this dream was a blessing, Tali's remaining time in the Taiga was marred somewhat by the tragedy inherent in Melfina's fate. The half-elf struggled with their affection for the frozen wizard, which they could not act on in earnest due to Melfina's incorporeal method of contact. Tali longed for a physical relationship that they had never acted to grasp while Melfina was still near, and could not bring themself to say the things they wanted to say until it was too late.   Upon Melfina's final vanishment, Tali had fulfilled her promise, and turned her path back home. Bidding Gleha and the others farewell, Tali ventured to the far south with Meifft, returning to her home city of Revelmoore. There she would finally join the Circle of the Old Faith as a proper druid, becoming a disciple of the mysterious Jeryth Phaulkon of Phaulkonmere. Meifft remained in her care, becoming a beloved facet of the Circle's gatherings and somewhat of an honorary member, who went on to befriend a kind bronze dragon that also lived in the city.   Tali's adoration and deep connection to the natural world, strengthened rather than burdened by a link to the Shadowfell, deeply impressed Jeryth. Given Phaulkon's incorporeal form as a demipower bound to her home in Phaulkonmere, Jeryth would eventually name Tali as the Circle's public representative. Overjoyed and humbled in equal measure, Tali gladly accepted this charge, and continued to hold this position well beyond the Dragon Heist of 3521.   Until their dying day, Tali carried on their person a small holy symbol of La Saia the Frostmaiden, worn firmly and closely over their heart.

Dahlia Kaltro & Oarus Masthew

Snowdrift Huntress & Speaker of Whiteridge

The sun may have risen upon the Taiga once more, but Dahlia's hometown of Whiteridge was no more. With no family to speak of and no drive to become a barbarian despite her bond with Ragna, Dahlia had to find a new life for herself in the wake of summer's return.   After some silent internal debate, Dahlia decided to move with the refugees of Camp Daybreak to the site of their new home of Helgafel, protecting them and hunting for them as she went. When the town was officially founded and homes were built, the townsfolk asked Dahlia to stay and continue acting as a guide and huntress - an easy prospect for her to agree to.   Dahlia supported her newfound people the only way she knew; through hunting and acting as a guide, bringing in game and finding new resources hidden in the snowbanks. It was an interesting change of pace from negotiating with an ancient dragon and facing a goddess in mortal combat, but a welcome one for the earth-grounded huntress. Dahlia's prowess as a ranger would become a major factor in Helgafel's initial success.   She was soon joined by Oarus Masthew, former Speaker of lost Whiteridge and her childhood friend, who declined to return to politics after losing his home to the Broken Blade. Oarus similarly declined offers to join the orcs of Storm's Call, who admired his skill as a warrior shown at the Battle of Whiteridge. He wished for a simpler life, in which he simply helped people without bureaucracy and negotiations.   Thus did the half-orc take to the ranger's trade well, having known it to be his father's own line of work in times past. Dahlia and Oarus worked together long into the following year, helping to feed and support many people of Helgafel. As they laid the foundations for what would eventually become the Wardens in White, the pair discovered that they had become quite fond of each other. Such bonds were precious, especially to those who lost loved ones to La Saia's winter, and it took little hesitation for them to act on their feelings for one another..   Dahlia and Oarus became inseparable, and became pillars of Helgafel's community for their contributions to the burgeoning town. Often departing for extended treks into the deep wilderness, the duo were celebrated upon every return by the people joining their voices in singing "The Ranger's Return", a folk song often recited in their honor.   A short six months after Alith departed for the Rock of Bral, Dahlia found herself with child, and Oarus wasted no time proposing. Theirs was the grandest ceremony ever held in the small town's history, as they tenderly exchanged their vows in the shade of the Giving Tree under the officiation of Markham Southwell. The gathering was attended by many survivors of the Everlasting Rime, veterans of the Battle of Whiteridge, and the whole of the Lonesome Few - including Melfina, who appeared in her usual projected form to witness the whole affair.   The duo would live the rest of their lives in Helgafel, barring their frequent 'vacations' to the wilds in order to remain connected to the world around them. They became synonymous with the Wardens in White, and defended the fledgling town from threats great and small. It was a happy existence, and one Dahlia knew that she had fought tooth-and-nail for. She had been given a second chance during the Everlasting Rime, a chance that her father was not afforded, and she swore to never waste it.   The Kaltro children, as they grew and came of age, all eventually moved on from the Taiga to seek their fortunes and dreams elsewhere. Despite this, Dahlia and Oarus remained permanent fixtures, serving as keepers of past memories and gentle guides to the young. The pair would eventually pass from old age on the very same day, only a few short years before a hobgoblin army descended upon Helgafel, and thus never witnessed a Helgafel that knew anything but peace.   Dahlia and Oarus and were buried in the forests that had long since become their haven. Their lessons in both the ways of war and the wild continued to influence many rangers and wardens that followed in their footsteps. Shane, a future defender of Frostgale Taiga, would keep their traditions and teachings alive in their battles against the Red Hand of Doom - in this way, Dahlia Kaltro and her beloved continued to defend the land they called home even in memory, guiding the next generation just as the memory of her father Sephek had once guided her in her hour of greatest need.

The New Arrival

Melanie's brief encounter with the Lonesome Few brought her into the company of many influential citizens in Helgafel, a town that welcomed her as if she were a treasured neighbor that had lived there for decades.   Together with Dannika Greysteel, Melanie was able to pursue meaning through academics in this remote corner of the world. Hardly glamorous or exciting (depending on who you ask), it was still a fine life to lead. The people of the Snowdrift Flatlands had been given their lives, and Melanie had been given a future, and it was one she intended to spend happily learning all there was to know about the land around her.   In moments of deep reflection, buried deep in her notes and journals, Melanie would often hear a gentle lullaby on the icy winds, lulling her softly to sleep. When she awoke, she would always find her notes to have been sifted through by practiced and caring hands, but with no evidence as to the perpetrator's identity whatsoever.   Another mystery to solve; and what a place in which to solve it!

The Lonesome Few & Those Beyond

But what of the heroes at the center of this tale? What journeys did they embark upon, what new lives did they lead, and what dreams did they pursue? They had come far, a disparate group of ragged survivors to slayers of gods and challengers of archdevils. No longer lonely, but with a bond forged among them stronger than adamantine, stretching far beyond the bounds of mere physical distance.   The Taiga was a distant place from the civilized world, one that few knew and even fewer dared to tread. Yet the land would always bear the mark of the passage of these three heroes, and those who followed in their wake. The planes themselves and the fates of those destined to die for one another would rumble quietly with their echoes, calling to mind their names for the rest of time.

Ragna Alfsbur & Doluma Sunblight

The Burning Blood, the Frozen Flame, the Eternal Pyre & Daughter of the Shattered King

As she began the process of reviving the tribe as the Tempered Blade, Ragna surprised many who knew her by not claiming leadership of the tribe's warriors, but instead establishing the Hall of Ise. She would emulate the Ice Giant Skalds, inspiring her comrades with the tales of their ancestors' heroics and downfalls both. While it took some time to break some of the habits of Ragna's orations, they eventually became an exceptional story teller, able to paint the tale in the minds of their listener while still retaining that voice that made his Ragna's stories their own. In this way, she brought new life to her title of Eternal Pyre, never forgetting the past, but helping herself and others to grow from it. As the tribe made the shift to more peaceful allies of the Taiga, this mentorship became all the more important, and Ragna was determined not to make the same mistakes of her father.   Where Ragna was once the example of everything Ten Towners feared of the barbarians, his time and experience across the Taiga and the Ten Towns had softened towards those he previously looked down on. As he had learned the value of skills outside of warmongering, he wished to bring that new perspective to the new Tempered Blade. Having seen from his allies that some problems could be solved without violence, Ragna had grown to use their newfound strength responsibly, taking the time to look at other options before drawing steel. But even as he moved forward, Ragna carried the loss of his many siblings and of Nevara and Minerva with him. The warrior once feared as the Burning Blood now focused his strengths to making the world one that would have welcomed those that would never see it.   To this end, Ragna often journeyed across the Taiga, saving travelers from its many dangers, as Oyaminartok had done for him so many years back. On these journeys, he would often come across those who had no place to call their own. Early on these lost souls were mostly surviving members of the Broken Blade, but also other folk who had lost everything, as well as those who fled north from what their lives had been. Ragna would usually help these people to one of the settlements in the Taiga, but would also offer the hand of the Tempered Blade, welcoming all those who would want to make a better life for themselves and provide for the tribe in turn. Where joining the Broken Blade was a cruel ultimatum with a blade at the throat, Ragna ensured that joining the Tempered Blade was a mercy given with an open hand.   Once Ragna and Thokgrim had slain Siegmar and removed the last remnants of the Broken Blades' age, Ragna found himself with more time to devote to his own life. During this time, she and Doluma grew closer, bonding over a shared upbringing with ambitious warlords and, more importantly, a love of good drink with good company. Eventually, the two started a relationship that led to the birth of Ragna's first descendant, Ysmir Ragnusson. However, while both cared for each other, they would have to contend with Ragna's frequent traveling and presumably much shorter lifespan. Both agreed to have the freedom to have multiple partners, but enjoyed the other's company when time and distance allowed. Ragna had several partners over the years, especially in the settlements and communities that he frequently traveled to. He had many descendants, all named for important people that Ragna had lost in his life, a trend that became something of tradition for members of the Hall of Ise.   When word arrived that the Frostmaiden once again had physical form, Ragna was concerned about the safety of the Taiga. While he was sure it was not the same La Saia he had fought, and it was clear that the Eternal Winter was not beginning again, she acted with caution towards the reborn goddess. When the tribe's shamans confirmed that this La Saia didn't have the same harshness as Nevara, and was actively working against the cult of Levistus, Ragna was glad to accept La Saia worship back into the tribe. The Halls of Ise, in particular, were often worshippers of her, knowing well the story of the previous La Saia and the different ideals she had represented.   As the years continued to show in his human siblings, it became quickly apparent that Ragna was not aging at the rate of a normal human. Whether it was her chardalyn heart, his magically empowered blood, or the blessing of the giants was up for debate, but whatever the reason, it was clear that Ragna would be around for a long time. As the Eternal Winter became history, its sole remaining hero in the Taiga became folktale. The civilizations of the Taiga would often tell stories around the hearth of a giant who protected travelers, teaching them to survive and fighting the powerful creatures that dwelled in the ice.   About 50 years after the Eternal Winter, Ragna had to consider his place in the tribe. While he could have continued holding the title of Jarl of Ise, he had concerns of holding the title for overlong, fearing it might cause stagnation in the tribe. He passed the title of Jarl to his daughter, Nevara Ragnusdóttir, who had always been taken by her parent's stories, especially the sad tale of her namesake. As she took to the position, Ragna remained as councilor, both to her and the tribe as a whole.   Once it was clear that the tribe was growing well without his guidance, Ragna decided that it was once again time to broaden his horizons. For the first time in their life, Ragna left the Taiga, traveling south to greater world that she had only heard of in the tales of others. She would see this world for herself, and continue helping those along her path. Lloegyr could be a harsh land, but Ragna Alfsbur had the strength, and now the wisdom, to leave it better than they found it.

Alithkav & Peanut

The Starbourne Drifter & her Miniature Giant Space Hamster

Into Realmspace did Alith's path of ascension rise, where time left no scars and possibilities outnumbered the very stars themselves. Her aim would be no less than the liberation of the githyanki people from Vlaakith's tyrannical reign, and she would have the timeless, astral infinity in which to pursue it.   Yet even though the unmeasurable forever stretched far beyond the visible bounds of her destiny, it seemed dwarfed by the enormity of those three short months in Frostgale Taiga. A critical moment of weakness, a desperate gamble that had cost the lives of her family among the stars was always going to alter the trajectory of her life from that point onward. Yet instead of falling to despair, Alithkav rose above the despair, above the portent set upon her by Vlaaktih, and above her own self-doubt.   She and her companions had slain a lesser deity. When that fact crossed her mind, Vlaakith did not seem so invincible.   Forever changed by her ordeal during the Everlasting Rime, Alith would take to the stars alongside her new comrades under the command of the legendary zerth Dak'kon, carrying with her the treasures both physical and mental she had uncovered in Lloegyr's frozen north. Far more powerful than any sword, more stout than any heavy plate was the steeled mind that she had cultivated, a willpower that had resisted the whims of an elder brain, the Frostmaiden, and even Vlaakith herself.   Alith settled into her work with the resistance; seventy years would pass in the blink of an eye as she and her compatriots put themselves to work in the ceaseless quest to erode Vlaakith's rule. Alith revisited the Taiga as often as she was able, always remaining as youthful as the day of the spelljammer crash while those around her began to grow old and gray. Her presence in these lands would grow somewhat distant, for their worlds and realities were irrevocably divergent, but never would the people of the Taiga forget their kind savior from beyond the stars.   Nor would they ever forget her delightful hamster, of course.   But the call of rebellion ever lingered on the cosmic winds. The people of Helgafel would watch their strange visitor depart one final time before the Red Hand of Doom descended upon them. They could only wait and pray that a new band of heroes would rise and rival the Lonesome Few in these dark times, for Alith was gone, deep into the Astral Plane.   For Alith faced her own gauntlet of darkness and strife amongst the stars. The time would soon come for a decisive strike against Vlaakith, once the stars aligned and the tides of fate saw fit to cross her path with that of those destined to shake the very planes.   Very soon, there would only be but one sky above the children of Gith.

Veszaltyrr Oussndar

The Eminent Architect of the Clockwork Sanctum

The Everlasting Rime was but a step in Veszaltyrr's labyrinthine quest to remove the stain of the Spider Queen from the cosmos, but it was an important. Imbued with the souls siphoned from the Mythallar of Ythryn, the Heart of Cygnus was finally awakened to its full potential, granting the brass-handed sorcerer phenomenal axiomatic power. With the Heart in his hands, Veszaltyrr wielded the miracle of creation, with which he could fashion wonderworks of brass and clockwork. These new capabilities inspired him to give form to his favored servants, the clockwork angels; eerily 'perfect' winged humanoid figures comprised of metal and gears rather than flesh and bone.   Invention was not his end goal, however. Veszaltyrr foresaw his quest not as a single road, but a myriad of forked paths, and he knew that a foe such as Lolth would require him to explore many avenues of inquiry before bringing his challenge forth in earnest. Even though the Heart of Cygnus burned bright as an artifact of immense power, it alone would not be enough to challenge his hated adversary deep in her realm of the Demonweb Pits.   Thus did the Thief of Fates lay his foundations and traverse his many plotted courses, dedicating the following decades to refounding a circle of influence in the criminal underground of the city of Revelmoore. Although his gambit to claim the stolen fortune of Dagult Ambermantle in the Dragon Heist of 3518 ended in his own obliteration at the hands of the Mad Mage Halaster Blackcloak, even death could not stop Veszaltyrr for long. A cloned body, one of his many contingencies and hidden safeguards against defeat, inherited his consciousness and continued his crucial work.   Veszaltyrr's second project of engineering the fulfillment of an ancient prophecy, one which foretold the coming of a warrior in white who would stand against the Spider Queen, saw far more satisfactory results. Vesper DeVir, one of his subordinates from the time of the Dragon Heist, would rise to prominence and fame as a chosen of the goddess Desna - revealed by the selfsame prophecy to be the estranged sister of Lolth, with whom she created the drow people long ago. Although Vesper's dedication was to the salvation of the drow rather than to directly slaying Lolth, Veszaltyrr had helped to fashion a potent weapon to be pointed at his ultimate nemesis.   Still, he was never one to let another do the work for him, and there were more forks in the road to travel. One could never hang too many blades over the neck of their enemy.   With his forces largely decimated by the culmination of the Heist, Veszaltyrr would need to regain power and support in order to undertake his newest and loftiest ambition. The sorcerer vanished into the planes, seeking ends unknown - and where he walked, a cold wind that carried a singing voice followed in his wake.   To see his dream won, he was prepared for everything to be lost. Veszaltyrr would gladly pay such a price - but he would never allow himself to stop and count the cost.

La Saia, the Frostmaiden

Frozen Memory

Divinity and individuality are incompatible concepts. A common misconception that mortals oft have of the gods is that they are beings ruled by very mortal compulsions and emotions, who feel mortal desires and despair. The inhabitants of the pantheon are more akin to concepts, forces of nature and exemplars of ideals than individual beings, though the line is quite blurry to the earthly eye.   And yet even the gods themselves defy their own rules at times, for the Everlasting Rime was born of a mortal woman turned divine, in her quest to save her mortal beloved. The Rime's very foundation was built from mortal longing and sorrow, and it was brought to a screeching halt by the mortal drive to survive against all odds. The Eternal Winter - a godly tragedy engineered by the divine hands of La Saia - was quite the mortal affair in the grand scheme of things.   Thus, when La Saia was destroyed and her essence molded by the dreams of a scholar lost beyond the pale, it was only natural that she would change drastically. She was still La Saia, the Frostmaiden. Still the song on the icy winds, who once froze over the Taiga and doomed its people to save one woman. Yet the influence of Melfina Eres was undeniable, easily seen by those with familiar eyes when La Saia re-emerged fourteen years following the Eternal Winter's ending.   This new Frostmaiden for a new age was one more passive and distant, one who preferred to watch and witness the beauty of the natural winter take shape. The gentle chwingas and frigid ice elementals became her favored denizens of places where snow and frost reigned. Her songs sung against the winter winds were no longer sorrowful laments, but dedications to the ephemeral beauty of the season. Rather than prolong the season in which she held authority, La Saia would respect its passing to spring, favoring the balance that was inherent in the natural progression of the year's divisions.   This is not to say that the biting edge that La Saia had been known for had disappeared, however. As soon as La Saia returned as a power in the cosmos, a shadow war began to be waged against the servants of the Archdevil Levistus. The two powers and their followers would remain eternal nemeses, as the two exemplars of ice and snow fought to claim total dominion over the winter season.   It was this La Saia that carried the Frostmaiden's legacy into the next century. She was a regionally-bound deity, a lesser power amongst the very forces of creation, but the effects of her Rime and her rebirth would be felt far beyond the Taiga that she claimed as her protectorate.   As the flames of the first hell of Avernus began to burn brighter than they had in eons, small veins of ice began to creep into Baator's blasted grounds - some of them a lustrous white, others a dull and cutting black. It was far from her snowy realm that she would challenge her hated infernal enemy, in this place of heat and blood. La Saia's advance, however, would be calm and calculated, accompanied by the faint ticking of a clock...

Nevara & Minerva

Victims of Virtue's Cruel Price

Most folk, if they were to learn the depth of the love shared by the two star-crossed Hyperborean archmages, would remark on the tragedy of it all; the depth of the loss they had suffered together, how they never reached the victory they sought, and how they were forced to pay the ultimate price on the behalf of men that had died long before they walked the earth.   The two archmages had crossed the very boundaries of mortality and divinity to keep their promise to see each other once more. They had fallen far, killed many, and defied the fates themselves, and now they faced the darkness of forever at the hands of an archdevil whom they had been sold to before they were even born, with no feasible means of escape.   But they faced this cruel eternity together. That small comfort was more than they had been given in centuries. By their mere presence, the desolate crucible devoid of all joy and hope that was Stygia was ever so faintly illuminated.   No matter how hard Levistus pushed, he could never douse the spark that Nevara and Minerva lit on the day they swore to destroy his great gift to Ythryn.   They would become proof that even the black ice of the fifth hell could be shaken but as for it to be shattered? Such was a quest to be undertaken by only the bravest of souls, willing to throw themselves into the chilling maw of hatred itself.   In time, perhaps such a journey will come to pass, where the songs of all the bards come true and the bonds of love and trust prevail over the unceasing evil of those who only exist to take.   But for now, merely being together was enough.
