29 - 5/9/22 : Grace Under Pressure
In-game Date: 30th of Freyrmond, 3521
"You see, I'm not an idealist, Veszaltyrr. I'm not playing by the rules and hoping for the best; I'm making new ones, and I plan for others to take up that torch when I'm gone. No, I'm no idealist. I'm a gods-damned revolutionary."
A tense moment passed before Zelem, staring down his rival in the race for Ambermantle's lost gold, finally spoke.
"You're not entirely wrong, we're not so different. But that's because we're not special, Veszaltyrr. There's a million sob stories like yours and mine. Hundreds of people will eventually turn out like you, and hundreds more will turn out like me. No, we're just playing out an age old story. When a tyrant rears his ugly head, there'll always be heroes who arrive to stop them. It should be the group headed for the vault right now, but you had to go and take your mark off cue, so instead you've got me. I don't fancy myself much of a hero, but I'm willing to don the mask long enough to put you down."
He then looked to Panic and Ember, who had just arrived. "Miss Vel... -s..." Zelem grimaced at the confusion and then sighed. "Panic, Ember. This isn't your fight and you shouldn't have come here." A slight, accepting smile crept on his face. "Thank you."
Wordlessly, Veszaltyrr replied by bringing the Heart of Cygnus to bear, and both sides threw themselves into action.
Veszaltyrr wielded immense sorcerous power, unparalleled mortal command over the energies of Mechanus, and a powerful artifact that amplified his magical might. With several Clockwork Angels at his side, Veszaltyrr focused on slinging spells at his opponents, while Zelem and Ruven fought him tooth-and-nail with counterspells.
Ruven attempted to use water and ice to create hazardous terrain for Veszaltyrr; however, his abilities to hover and teleport allowed him respite from such hinderance. Ruven fell back on her old tricks of slinging powerful shamanic cantrips and spells of furious ice to make up for this brief setback.
While she deftly avoided the Clockwork Angel, Raeziel shared some banter with Zelem in the heat of battle. The two agreed, albeit by way of brief mid-combat shouts, to work out some sort of truce, if not an alliance between their organizations after everything was concluded.
Meanwhile, Panic and Ember worked in tandem, with the former illuminating her wife's attacks with powerful Guiding Bolts and protecting her from advancing Clockwork Angels by commanding her trusty fire elemental, LeBron Flames. Ember used the guidance granted by Panic to press the attack, using her powerful Sun Blade and potent fire magic to cut through Veszaltyrr's immense magical defenses.
Angered by her insistent nature, Veszaltyrr targeted Ember with a powerful spell, Power Word: Torment, that caused her excruciating and debilitating pain. Despite this, she fought against the searing agony to hold Veszaltyrr in place with all of her might.
The combat continued on until Veszaltyrr was pushed to his absolute limits. With utmost desperation, the Lord of the Black Network summoned an overwhelming Meteor Swarm, which incapacitated his opponents. Determined to deliver the final blow, Veszaltyrr blinked away from sight and reappeared in front of the temple. He tightly clenched his metal fist, its surface gleaming in the firelight like a piece of metal being hammered by a smith. His expression was flat and distanced, but the fury and rage behind his eyes could not be concealed. The pressure in the air continued to rise, and the battle raging in the sky seemed far from ceasing.
Yet there was an air of finality as Veszaltyrr began channeling his next spell. The Heart of Cygnus spun rapidly, blurring the air around it like a violent singularity. Those who would oppose the Master of Cygnus braced themselves for his next assault, only for a single word to cut the burning night air like a knife through butter.
"Father!"
Standing on a roof untouched by flame, Solauvaire stood with his cane-focus firmly in hand. He looked down upon Veszaltyrr, his face a mix of conviction and abject terror.
For the first time, Veszaltyrr displayed an emotion other than stoic determination; surprise. The magic energy gathered in hands did not disperse, but rested as he addressed the appearance of his estranged son. "Solauvaire. It does my heart well to know the power you wield over this city… but you were a fool to come here, you know. Even without the glyphs, I am a sorcerer of eld. I can still conscript your mind with a hard enough push."
"I know." Solauvaire admitted. "That's why I'm not here to fight you. I've brought someone else who can."
Veszaltyrr whipped his head around to the towering marble figures on the horizon, finding them inert. "Your sleeping statues? They seem quite lethargic for your emergency plan, son."
Solauvaire shook his head and produced a small baton from his jacket; a wand with a dragon's head adorning each end. A third new emotion overtook Veszaltyrr's face, one most unexpected; fear. "The statues sleep today. Instead, I call upon the one being in Revelmoore that you are afraid of. If this is what it takes to stop you, then I am willing to roll the dice."
Before Veszaltyrr could loose his magics against his son, Solauvaire launched the wand into the burning carcass of the temple serving as the battle's backdrop. For a moment, all that happened was the simple sound of breaking glass, barely audible above the roar of the flames… until the flames themselves begun to flicker, twist, and bend into unnatural shapes. The fire climbed the length of the church, spiraling into the coherent form of a man's face, adorned with wild hair and a long, unkempt beard. The face in the flames rose into the air to where it was visible from all points in the city, yawned, and then fell into a maddened cackle before the face of Halaster looked down upon Veszaltyrr with a squinted eye.
Suddenly, a figure burst from the flames; a gaunt man wreathed in a robe adorned with living, blinking eyes of all shapes and sizes landed on the ground with his bare feet, the dual-headed wand in hand. His presence was like a pervasive odor; the ambient magic surrounding Halaster was almost too much for the mind to process, and even the likes of Zelem, Panic, Ruven, and Solauvaire found it difficult to keep their composure in front of the Mad Mage.
Halaster stood up fully and stretches, cackling in laughter and pain alike as his back cracked. As he spoke, the face in flames mimicked his own, amplifying his words for all of Revelmoore to hear.
"I thought I told you, child of the caves, that you were not welcome in my mountain." Halaster proclaimed. His tone of voice and the motion of his hands unsubtly implied that he viewed Revelmoore itself as part of the Undermountain. "Not on the first layer, the third layer, the zeroth, NONE of them! You were warned, stealer of cogs, breaker of pacts, exile of dreams… and now I will finish my grand work! I think I will begin by destroying your other arm!"
Veszaltyrr relinquished his magic and grasped at his brass arm as if it was causing him immense pain. A costly mistake, as Halaster waved his wand in the air, conjuring not three, nor five, but innumerable dozens upon dozens of magic missiles that began to to throw themselves at the dark elf. Veszaltyrr quickly threw up a magical shield and buckled under the pressure of Halaster's fusilade; even the reliable shield spell buckled against the onslaught of hundreds of magic missiles flying in a torrent against him. Halaster's cackles filled the air throughout the city; parties ceased, festivities halted, and even Open Lord Reverie drew her sword from her place in the Palace as if to defend herself from inevitability.
Veszaltyrr did not scream, nor did he protest or claim the unfairness of it all. Looking upon Halaster's faces, feeling the searing pain in his arm, and remembering the weight of the destiny he had taken on for himself, he spoke merely one, short phrase.
"Zesala… forgive me."
…and in a flash, the clock stopped ticking. Veszaltyrr was gone, leaving Halaster able to gloat over his victory with even heartier cackles. As his voice pitched, Halaster floated into the air and into the mouth of his flaming visage, flying higher and higher until finally the fiery likeness of the Mad Mage exploded, bathing all of Revelmoore's night sky in a stunning display of flames not unlike a grand meteor shower.
With the immediate danger passed, Solauvaire quickly administered healing potions to those gathered in the courtyard to keep them alive, and helped them up. Zelem thanked Solauvaire for his timely, yet very peculiar form of assistance, but noted that Clockwork Angels and Modrons continued to harass the Griffin Cavalry above. The battle was not yet over, and Solauvaire conveyed his intent to rejoin the fight. Zelem, Ruven, Raeziel, Panic, and Ember, however, were in no condition to fight, and thus Zelem used the power of his fathomless patron to warp the lot of them to his ship, The House, to recover.
Meanwhile, the Red Spirits found their way into Brandath Crypt, discovering a large wall covered in Dwarven runes that the Stone of Golorr's powers concealed from onlookers. The party offered up...

Portraits
The Red Spirits
Reilly Springs, of Two Worlds - A young, anxious satyr artificer and inventor, who has fashioned for herself a magic suit of armor that grants her impressive combat capabilities. Now free of the debt that hounded her, Reilly is committed to supporting her friends as she sets down roots in Revelmoore. She has taken to spending time with Fala Lefaliir, the serene gardener and proprietor of Aelbwynn’s Crown; a relationship now sealed with a kiss. With her inventiveness and dedication, she has conquered her fears and has finally reached the lost gold in the Vault of Dragons. Brooke Acropora, The One, The Only - A charming water genasi and a native of Revelmoore, who supports the party with his keen intuition concerning the fanciful and fascinating goings-on of the city. Brooke moonlights as a contributor to The Targe, a broadsheets publication that seeks out the most interesting and sauciest news scoops of the day. Currently, Brooke is focused on ensuring that Troll Skull Manor becomes an unforgettable spectacle to its visitors, but part of his mind continues to be occupied by his tryst with the mysterious Zelem Corvo. He has reached the apex of the spotlight, the dead center of the stage, fulfilling his destiny as the star of the show as he helps his friends in the mortal struggle against Ar'ginoth, the Chained One in a climax for the ages. Yilani Deniz, Troll Skull's Warden - A severe, perceptive Yuan-ti Pureblood druid who once masqueraded as a human refugee from Khemit in order to gather information on the wealthy and powerful of Revelmoore on behalf of a Yuan-ti cult of Aapep. After coming to love the city and her new friends, Yilani has turned her back on her people and helped to drive them out of the city before their nefarious plans could be enacted. Having helped Raeziel retake her family's legacy, Yilani has joined the new Xanathar Guild as one of Raeziel's most trusted 'eyes'. To protect her beloved friends, she has ventured into the depths of the Vault of Dragons, serpentine form poised to strike the massive balor protecting Dagult Ambermantle's gold. Eula Havenspire, Beloved Echo - A calm and collected azure-haired knight, who wields a blade with inhuman precision and swiftness. She is the wife of Megumi, though she currently suffers from amnesia and remembers nothing of her life before awaking in the Undermountain. The party rescued her from the Xanathar's Arena of Blood and Fortune, and after being told of Megumi's actions and sacrifice, Eula offered her blade in the pursuit for the lost gold of Dagult Ambermantle. Honoring the wishes of a wife she can hardly remember, Eula's blade is now pointed against a minion of the abyss; her greatest challenge yet. Lackadaisical, Heir of Circumstance - More commonly known as “Lackie”, this charming young tiefling woman is the daughter of the famed ex-adventurer Fomalhaut the Financier. She moonlights as a lawyer and represents members of less-than-legal enterprises in Revelmoore, including members of the Black Network. After taking a reprieve from adventuring to manage Troll Skull Manor's finances, she has rejoined the party to help them in the final stretch of their quest for the lost gold of Dagult Ambermantle. She remained behind to lead the defense of Troll Skull Manor, trusting the rest of the Red Spirits to get the job done. Renaer Ambermantle, Rekindled Hope- The estranged son of Dagult Ambermantle, the previous Open Lord of Revelmoore. A skilled fighter, an agent of the Masquerade, and a man of noble standing. Renaer faces scrutiny because of his father’s legacy, but still retains friends in high places. He has befriended the party and spends most of his time fraternizing with them. He was grievously wounded by a fireball aimed at a spy working for his father, but he managed to survive with only burn scars on his face, and has returned to the field with the rest of the party. Having borne first hand witness to his father's crimes, he now stands against Ar'ginoth to protect his friends and return honor to the Ambermantle name.Violet - A strange purple cat that was purchased by Brooke at the Old Xoblob Shop. For all intents and purposes, she seems to be a completely normal cat; save for the fact that her fur is a deep shade of violet. She told Brooke her story, revealing that she was once a human adventurer that was polymorphed into a purple cat by Halaster Blackcloak, the Mad Mage of the Undermountain. She appears to be more than happy with this situation. Róisín - A homunculus created by Reilly out of a mechanical skeleton, an enchanted crystal, and plants grown from feywild seeds. Róisín resembles a winged rabbit composed of plant matter, and is unfailingly loyal to her creator.
Veszaltyrr Oussndar - The mythic founder of the Black Network, who was thought to have disappeared over three-hundred years ago. An imposing, well-spoken dark elf with a left arm made entirely of brass, he radiates magical might even in visions. He spoke to the party in a dream and gave them his well wishes, announcing his intent to remember them after their demise. With the Green Eye of Golorr gone and one of his most powerful lieutenants slain, his position in the Grand Game of Ambermantle's Enigma has been greatly weakened; however, he was still able to muster an army of Clockwork Angels and modrons to hinder the allies of the Red Spirits while he personally confronted Zelem Corvo and his associates. With the arrival of Halaster, Veszaltyrr endured a massive barrage of magic missiles before vanishing. Zelem Corvo - The well-mannered yet conniving thief lord of the Devil’s Hands thieves guild from Fortune’s Crossing, a town from across the Gulf of Akados. A master of disguise and deception, he is conducting shadowy dealings in Revelmoore to unknown ends. After dangerously underestimating the party’s capabilities and losing his expensive submersible in the process, he approached them with an ultimatum to help him redistribute the gold back to Revelmoore or face him and his guild as an enemy in the Grand Game. Having barely survived a showdown with Veszaltyrr, Zelem has left his hopes with the Red Spirits. Ruven Torrel - A wood elf shaman and agent of the Devil’s Hand thieves guild who answers directly to its leader, Zelem Corvo. She has an obvious affinity for water and has tailored her spellcasting powers for manipulating and surviving within it. She promised Panic that the life she chose was one she enjoyed, and that she would do her best to remain safe; however, she joined her boss Zelem in a standoff against the powerful sorcerer Veszaltyrr. Raeziel Ramrider - The youngest of the three Ramrider sisters. A duergar rogue and loan shark, who worked as the Doom Raiders’ Master of Coin. Raeziel recently proclaimed herself the new Xanathar, guildmaster of the Xanathar Guild and heir to the Ramrider family legacy, making her the most powerful crime lord in the city. In return for their help in securing her new position, Raeziel is helping the party in their quest for the gold, and formulated a plan to get the party to the Vault. She chose to stand with Zelem and the others against Veszaltyrr Oussndar himself. Panikkaria “Panic” Vel - A tiefling more like a moth than a devil, this charming Druid once adventured to save her beloved from a terrible affliction, but now happily resides with her recovered wife as an astrologian and teacher. Having reconvened with her former allies Zelem and Ruven, she feels indebted to them for their aid in restoring Ember to health, and has decided to assist them in their battle against Veszaltyrr. Ember Vel - A fire genasi sorcerer and a member of the Seer’s League, a guild of spellcasters from the Free City of Aspencove in the far north of Frostgale Taiga. A child of two noble lineages, she is in the city with her family to visit her relatives of House Galethon, a noble house of Revelmoore. Unwilling to stand aside and be idle, she has joined her wife Panic in the fight against Veszaltyrr to repay the debt she too owes to Zelem and Ruven. Solauvaire Oussndar - The current archmage of Revelmoore, having assumed the position after his predecessor’s death four years ago. When asked about Veszaltyrr Oussndar, Solauvaire asked for the party’s faith and secrecy as he revealed himself to be Veszaltyrr’s son, and walked them through magical projections of his memories. The Fang of Aurinax, the powerful artifact that hangs around his neck and acts as his badge of office, has been revealed to be an illusion due to the real item’s disappearance over a century ago. He has placed faith in the party's ability to acquire the lost gold and the true Fang of Aurinax, preferring to stay out of his father's way to ensure he cannot be magically controlled to act against the city. However, he stood against Veszaltyrr and brought Halaster Blackcloak, the one being his father fears, into the fray. Halaster Blackcloak - The Mad Mage of the Undermountain, and one of the most powerful spellcasters in all of Lloegyr. This insane wizard came to Solauvaire's aid to drive Veszaltyrr out of the city before his moment of ultimate victory. He revealed that he was the reason behind Veszaltyrr's initial disappearance during the old days of the Black Network, and had taken the dark elf's arm in a magic duel. After claiming his victory once again, Halaster disappeared after showering Revelmoore's skies in a beautiful meteor shower.
Ar'ginoth, the Chained One - A balor, one of the most powerful types of demons (or tanar'ri) from the depths of the abyss. Ar'ginoth was summoned by Veszaltyrr four years ago during the eclipse to assassinate High Dragon Galder Dezelentyr and thus push Solauvaire into the position where he could be controlled. This plot was only partially successful, with Galder being killed in the fight but Veszaltyrr being unable to control his estranged son. Ar'ginoth was then bound into service by Dagult Ambermantle using the Stone of Golorr before the demon could return to the abyss, and was posted in the Vault of Dragons as a final bulwark to defend Ambermantle's crimes. The fiend is the final obstacle standing between the Red Spirits and the success of the fabled Dragon Heist.
The Stone of Golorr - A greyish-green ovular stone, about six inches long from end to end, with three recesses running vertically down its length. It is covered in a thin layer of ever-present mucus. With its third and final eye restored, the Stone is now capable of sharing the information contained within itself, though it now does so through the Tomekeeper to avoid overwhelming mortal minds with its nigh-infinite collection of lore. It also possesses the ability to wipe any memory or piece of information from the minds of every living creature on Lloegyr.
