Session 004 - Into the Valley: Part I

General Summary

The session starts with Strahd von Zarovich greeting each of the characters individually:
  • Magnus Frostbane: I see that your master has perfected his design.
  • Ash Lechbran: It is customary that my servants bow before me. He waited until Ash bowed before continuing.
  • Aurora Silverleaf: You interest me, how do you do it? Contain all four of you in the one body?
  • Hephastus Heavyhide: I recently had the pleasure of tasting blood of your local variety, Ingrid was it? When asked if Ingrid was still alive, all Strahd responded with was "I had no more use for her."
  • Selkis Netah: You do me great honour my Prince.
  • Ava Reigh: How marvelous! So that is what your father was doing during his escape. Welcome home niece.
The party continued to talk to Strahd asking questions, Strahd didn't answer much but did acknowledge that Ava Reigh's father was a man named Leo Dilisnya. As part of his interaction with the party, Strahd posed a variety of questions to the heroes, including:
  • "Ismark Kolyanovich defied me by keeping his sister from me. Why should I, as his lord, not punish him for his disloyalty?"
  • "I have claimed Ireena Kolyana, and twice marked her as my own. Why should I not take her with me to Castle Ravenloft right now?"
  • "Immediately prior to your entry to my lands, you caused great damage to a group of my servants—the occupants of a particular house on the borders of my domain. I had relied upon those servants to bring me specimens of interest, but your activities have left them indefinitely indisposed. Why should I not punish you for your crimes against them?"
During the questions, Ava Reigh produced her ring that contained the soul of Elisabeth Durst which Strahd took and destroyed the soul within. Happy with the responses the party gave, Strahd made the following concessions:
  • He agreed to overlook Ismark's transgressions, so long as Ismark does not defy him or act counter to his will again.
  • He agreed to allow Ireena to depart the River Ivlis Crossroads safely. (Strahd will not grant a longer grace period than that.)
  • He agreed to forgive the players their transgressions against the cult of Death House.
After this, Strahd departed from the party stating they would meet again soon.   Before the party departed the River Ivlis Crossroads, Ash and Hephastus saw a vision of the loxodon's and Ava's lifeless bodies hanging from a gallows. The vision clearly was a warning and disappeared shortly after. The party continued down the path from the River Ivlis Crossroads towards Tser Pool Encampment where they saw a blue-tipped raven fall in front of them injured. After Hephastus failed attempts to heal the bird, Ash stepped in and helped the raven. After speaking with the raven, whose name was Muriel, the party was attacked.   The creature that attacked them was a greater strix which was an artificial "bird" crafted of wood, animal skins, burlap, and hundreds of black raven's weathers and three swarms of lesser strix. While the battle was taxing, the party was able to successfully destroy the creatures, especially after they found out that they were vulnerable to fire. The party was able to grab a few silvered barbs that were embedded into the greater strix's wings before continuing onto Tser Pool.   During their travel to the Vistani Camp Muriel provided information to Ash:   The strix creatures were created by Baba Lysaga to hunt down the raven.   The raven had overheard a foretelling that was given to Strahd from Madam Eva and provided the heroes with the information from the first five cards.   The party are welcomed to Tser Pool Encampment by Stanimir, an old Vistana who informs them that the leader of their encampment, Madam Eva, has been waiting for them and points them towards Eva's tent. The party visits the tent and meet Madam Eva, who greets them by different names:
  • Magnus Frostbane: The Spy
  • Ash Lechbran: The Servant
  • Aurora Silverleaf: The Many
  • Hephastus Heavyhide: The Seeker
  • Selkis Netah: The Dark One
  • Ava Reigh: The Monster
After some discussion about Ingrid Boulderstrike with Hephastus, Madam Eva provides the heroes with a fortune telling using the Tarokka cards, warning them that she would not repeat or discuss the reading again. After this reading, Magnus bops Madam Eva on the nose, despite Ava attempting to grab him, and asks Madam Eva why she called him a spy, to which Madam Eva responds by placing a curse on Magnus.   The party leave the tent and meet Eliza and Arturi Radanavich, two vistani. With their new friends, the party join Stanimir at the fireplace for a game of stories. A hilarious game ensures where each hero and their companions tell a story that was either truthful, false, or a mixture. In the end Ireena Kolyana won the game with the most successful guesses and gives the winnings back to the party. During these events Madam Eva removes the curse from Magnus and encourages him to join in the Game of Stories, which the reborn does.   During this time, the party learns about the sad story of Arturi where they learn that Dr. Rudolph Van Richten cursed him. Arturi is a member of the Radanavich who's cousin Ionel got sick one day. The Radanavich family took the ill child to Dr. Rudolph Richten, where Ionel died in the doctors care. In retaliation the Radanavich family kidnapped Van Richten's son Erasmus and sold him to the vampire lord Baron Metus, who turned Erasmus into a vampire spawn that Van Richten would eventually be required to kill. In retaliation Van Richten killed the entire Radanavich clan, leaving Arturi the sole survivor and cursing him to be followed by the undead for all time. Arturi leaves the camp and the party spend the night resting and recuperating.   The next morning as the characters prepared to depart Tser Pool, Madam Eva greeted the party with a friendly cackle. Once pleasantries were disposed of, she proffers a velvet pouch containing 10 gp and asks them to bring it to Blinsky Toys in Vallaki, to purchase a toy for her great-grandniece, Arabelle. She also tells the heroes are welcome to keep any change as payment for their efforts. Madam Eva asks the characters to deliver the toy to the Vistani encampment to the southwest of Vallaki by the end of Arabelle's tenth nameday, which is in two days' time. Eva claimed that she would go herself, but that long journeys are simply too taxing for her old bones. She added, with a cryptic smile, that the players may enjoy speaking with Arabelle, as she is "a most interesting child." Madam Eva concluded the conversation by wishing the heroes well on their journey and returned to her tent.   When the heroes returned to the River Ivlis Crossroads on their journey to Vallaki, they encountered a skeletal rider that resembled the body of the young man they saw in Session II: Welcome to Barovia Village. The skeletal rider disappeared when the characters attempted to follow it. As the characters continue their journey west from the crossroads, they came across a crumbling Watchtower with a body of a wolf and the uncovered graves of two Barovians who had been killed by wolves.   Hephastus and Ash investigated the area to determine if they could track the wolves, and then finished the burial of the Barovians. Aurora investigated the watchtower, where she found a broken pendant of a silver dragon lying on the ground of the first floor, and noted the pendant was cold to the touch. Ava and Aurora then discussed their knowledge on silver dragons.   The party the continued on with their journey and finally reached Tser Falls where they found a bridge being guarded by a revenant who asked "Old things are stirring and the lord of Castle Ravenloft roams the valley. Tell me: Do you serve him?". The session ended.
