The Lord of Games

The Lord of Games, The Whispering King, King of the Faewylde, The Nameless One, The God in the Shadows, The God of Secrets, The First Liar, The God of Change...   No being in any of the planes knows the true name of the Lord of Games, save for the Lord of Games himself. According to religious history, this is why he is known as The First Liar. The story goes that when Vash'aguul, the Old God split into the Major Gods, the first act performed by the Lord of Games was to purge his name from the minds of the other gods. Why he did this is debated heavily in certain circles, but the general consensus is that it gives him some kind of edge over the other gods that mortals don't understand. However, from what mortals know of his demeanor and behavior, some contest that he might've just thought of it as some kind of prank he finds amusing.   First of the Major Gods to step into the Emergent Plane, one might assume there'd he'd have a large following or at least a wide variety of religious texts. In truth, while the Lord of Games is worshipped by some, particularly among the more mischievous of the humanoid races he created, the general perception is that he is the most capricious and crafty of the Majors. Some of the less educated even go as far as interpreting his unpredictability as him being the God of Chaos, a title which he'd likely firmly reject while pointing at Malavach, eyebrow raised.   Not many stories about the The Nameless One have survived to the modern era, but there is one that most people know:   When the Emergent Plane first came into being, it was ruled by dragons, immortal beings of incredible power and intellect. Magical by nature, the scholars who delve into this ancient history commonly believe that the magic that suffuses the Emergent Plane was originally held exclusively by these dragons. Some of these dragons grew tired of the stagnant, unchanging world they lived in, and so beseeched the God of Change to come make the world more interesting. It was this mistake that led to the downfall of the dragons, as this God of Change did exactly what he was asked: He made things interesting.   Nearly immediately, the God of Change siphoned the magical power of the dragons, stripping them of their unquestioned power on the plane. He then invited his godly kin to enter the world as well, and then created the Eladrin and Gnome races. The other gods followed suit and created their own mortal races, an act which ultimately led to the The First Dragon War.   Consolidating all the magic of the Emergent Plane would've been potentially catastrophic, and this is where the history of the Trickster God begins to diverge in interpretation. Some believe that the other Major Gods tore it from him, while others think he divided up that power willingly. Whichever is the case, it was this act that resulted in what most call The Weave or The Script, the underlying arcane framework permeating the Emergent Plane. Saeralla, the Goddess of Knowledge and twin sister of the Lord of Games, gave structure to the erratic power of magic, stabilizing it by suffusing the plane with a vast, complicated, invisible network of magical threads. Being the God of Change, the idea of a consistent, predictable, inert magic seemed like no fun at all, and so he taught mortals how to bend and warp The Script, thus creating the usage of magic as mortals now understand it. This is why these two gods are considered the Gods of the Arcane.   Shortly after the events leading up to the First Dragon War, the Lord of Games seems to have disappeared from the Emergent Plane, returning to his realm of the Faewylde. While it's common knowledge now that the Major Gods do not traverse the Emergent Plane now, there are stories of the other gods taking an active role in the world for some time. However, stories involving the Lord of Games seem to be especially rare, and are often dismissed as the insane ramblings of the delusional.

History

The relationship between the twin Gods of Magic is a complicated one   While the stories available that describe interactions between the two seem to generally imply some kind of mutual respect, there is commonly known point of contention.   Saeralla, the Goddess of Knowledge, supposedly knows everything. Everything, that is, except for one crucial piece of information that has eluded her since time immemorial: The true name of her brother.   It is believed that because of this, Saeralla stays locked in her Infinite Library, endless trying to discover this singular piece of knowledge hidden from her. Meanwhile, the Lord of Games toys with her by allowing her to repeatedly believe she's getting close before revealing that she's far from it.
