Zar'il
Zar'il is a faction of devils who are focused not on spreading chaos through corrupting mortals but rather by manipulating magic and the realm itself. Though they do practice manipulation and spread sins amongst mortals, Zar'il as an organization only does this to further its ends. They seek to turn the Mortal Plane into a paradise for devils by infecting it irreperably with negative magic. Zar'il are well known as the main distributors of the Blightshade plant, which they engineered to spread their corruption onto the mortal plane. By corrupting mortals and influencing them to use negative magic at higher rates, they can in turn draw more negative magic into the world and create negative hotspots where they can then rule. The largest area they have managed to corrupt thus far is the Shadowlands of Cet'aenn, a vast region which is infested with the Rotkin.
The Zar'il are an ancient breakaway faction of The Hierarchy who believe the veneration of Kyvos in the Kyvoian Compact has gone too far. They claim that the Kyvoian Compact was only relevant due to the need for the devils to have divine support in their war against the other gods. The Zar'il believe (like the followers of the compact) that the gods abandoned the mortal realm after their victory, but unlike the followers of the compact they think Kyvos is no longer necessary. In their minds, since the other gods are gone, there is no need to seek out and raise a defeated god to give them the world- they can just take and corrupt it themselves. Raising Kyvos is an unnecessary risk, since the god could then betray the devils, so even if raising him was possible it should not be done.
History
The Zar'il was formed as a combination of various groups who supported the formation of a unified Hierarchy but who abandoned the organization in disgust after followers of the Kyvoian Compact became the dominant faction. For this, they are veiwed as the archenemies of the Hierarchy, even more than The Draketh who opposed the formation of the Hierarchy in the first place.
The Zar'il first became involved on Yyradyan concurrent with the Dark Elven migration to the continent and around the time the Hierarchy became re-ascendent in the Shadow Dimension around the Yyradayn portal. After the The Great Calamity, the faction became far more interested in the continent and poured more resources into influencing it. This is because the magical radiation left behind by the Great Calamity was and is of great interest to the studiously minded Zar'il. Due to their interest in the Great Calamity's epicenter, which happens to fall in the zone of influence of the Hierarchy, they have mainly been targeting the Hierarchy on Yyradayn ever since the Great Calamity. Further cementing their focus on northern Yyradayn, their main influence on the continent is with the Kymrai, though this is a loose and exploitative relationship. However, they do have conflict with all other factions involved in the region.
