Voivodeship of Rutgren

The Voivodeship of Rutgren is an Erleting state, recently founded and based on the power of its military. The majority of Rutgren's lands were taken from the elven Republic of Aulienall, but now hold a human majority. Even the borderlands in the north have long been fought over by both human and elf, and could never have been called a human stronghold. However, that has changed because most of the state's lands have been settled, in the past 30 years, of various tribes and individual refugees fleeing from the north- from the revenge of the Alcediner. Although some small communities of elves remain in the region, the violence and chaos of the invasion has led to the majority of them either being taken as slaves or fleeting the region themselves.

History

The Voivodeship of Rutgren, like most of the other Erleting states in the region, is a young nation which can trace its history only back to the host of Dragan Ivar'. A ruthless warlord who attempted to crush the Alcediner city-states, Dragan's host dissolved after his death, with his lieutenants each taking a portion for themselves. One of these lieutenants was a man named Altsev Priven, who had the good sense to lead his troops east and not remain in the soon-to-be blood soaked west. Priven was an older veteran, a man who had a canny sense of combat, and not to bite off more than you could chew. Although not a part of Ivar's inner circle, Priven was trusted enough and often seen as a more reasonable voice in the war chamber, when he was consulted at all.

Predicting that the northwould soon become violent, he led a force of soldiers like him, as well as men from his old tribe that still held loyalty to them, and moved south, finding allies along the way. Altsev's wife had died in the war which set him on the path to joining Ivar's army, so he was unmarried, and as the leader of a strong host of men, he was easily able to form an alliance with one of the remaining tribes via marriage, and many of his soldiers wives besides. This new force would continue moving south, Altsev warning his new father in law that his clan would soon be in the path of more violent fleeting troops. Seeking an easily defensible land which he could take and hold, he would set his sights on Aulienall.

The elves were unprepared for an attack. After all, recent years had been peaceful thanks Dragan's invasion levying forces from the tribes which had been harassing Aulienall, and indeed after hearing of his death the Elven armies marched north in 1961 to reclaim previously lost lands. This proved to be a massive mistake, as it presented the perfect opportunity for Altsev's forces to ambush the elven column as they marched. The battle was a horrific defeat for the elves (who usually inflicted far more casualties than they suffered) and due being routed their casualties had to be left on the field, with thousands of elves being taken prisoner. Many of these troops would later be sold as slaves or ransomed for cash. Although some forces managed to escape onto boats of the Aulienall navy, this proved to be too few troops to successfully opposed the march of Altsev's column. Aulienall would only survive at all thanks to the Erleting force having to leave garrisons as they marched, thus depleting their forces, who began to suffer extensive attrition thanks to guerilla-style tactics implemented by Aulienall. The Erleting forces would ultimately fail to cross the tbd river in 1962, allowing the remnants of Aulienall to remain.

Low-intensity guerilla warfare would continue for the next few years, especially as elven refugees fled out of the lands conquered by Altsev. With this, he began his most ambitious plan, sending out a call for those tribes who were even now beginning to flee east in a mass. Pledge loyalty and there was land- hilly land, forested land, yet nonetheless land, for your own, something that was quickly becoming difficult to find. The best lands in the south, the former farmlands of Aulienall, were already under the control of Altsev and his tribal allies. Erleting tribes and refugees who allied with him continued moving into the region throughout , and by the 1980s had replaced the elven population near-entirely.

Although not quite as politically astute as Sarbarve to the north, Altsev was soon able to bring a strong authority and regular taxation to his new lands, bringing order and flushing out the remaining elvish guerillas. However even as he tried to bring his forces to bear against the elves, troubles surged in the north, as the borders of the new state came under threat, preventing a full conquest of Aulienall. Altsev then settled down to strengthen his dynasty, for he hoped to have a son that would succeed him. Although this did indeed come to pass, it meant that when Altsev (who had been 58 in 1961 at the outset of his conquest) died at 75, his son, born in 1964, was just 14 years old. Only the protection of his mother's clan and Altsev's most trusted troops kept the nation from breaking out into civil war, and even then there were skirmishes all across the nation and on all borders and the dead man's foes moved in to try to take his gains. But, against the odds, his son held, and now rules the nation as a 36 year old man with sons of his own. Schooled by elven slave tutors, he has shown himself relatively well-educated, but also brash and reckless, and always thinking about crushing the remnants in Aulienall, or pushing west and seizing the valleys, or north and crushing the trolls that lurk at the edges of the nation. It is only his short attention that has thus far kept one, if not multiple, of these campaigns from materializing.
