State of Gyeowai

The State of Gyeowai is a nation established in 253 S.C. after rebellions in the Kingdom of Suoyeong. Originally the Kingdom of Gyeowai, it was the southern vanguard of the Jungyu for many years. In 801 S.C. Gyeowai aligned with the Kingdom of Bakauwaejo to partition their former sovereign. Gyeowai then entered a rivalry with the Kingdom of Habagyeo due to the latter vulturing several provinces of the defeated Suoyeong. Gyeowai also feuded with Bakauwaejo, as they desired northern expansion. However, due to the backing of the Wanyun of Jungyu, Bakauwaejo was able to retain its independence. Nonetheless, when Jungyu fell to the new Wanyun of Haowun, Gyeowai conquered their northern neighbor. Instead of totally integrating them, Gyeowai made them a Cheonyeo, an autonomous and landed vassal. This went a long way to securing the loyalty of Bakauwaejo, as their local traditions were respected. This relationship still remains today, even after 7 centuries of time.
Gyeowai, with its loyal vassals (as Bakauwaejo was not the only Cheonyeo, only the largest) was a powerful check to the Wanyun of Haowun and indeed was able to conquer it in 1414. This marked the first time the southern Jungyu had held a Wanyun since the Wanyun of Auwaejo, the very first. Gyeowai's promises of autonomy and decentralization seemed to many a good compromise between the minority rule of the Haowun and the human-centric behavior of the preceding Jungyu. Thus, they were able to obtain the support of a number of nobles in their conquest. Gyeowai would move court north to the capital of the wanyun. Although Gyeowai's promises were initially successful, over time the state became corrupt as the Gyeowai were unable to reign in their powerful Cheonyeo, many of whom were disloyal at best. Although unstable, this situation would last for some time. The spark of change only came when Ursumar migrants from the Divinity of Ashēryku, who were fleeing persecution arrived on the Frontiers of the Wanyun. Numaneš, leader of the migrants, attempted to reason with the local military and gain entrance, but they refused. Despite Numaneš appealing, the Emperor refused to allow the migrants to settle. Gathering his men and reaching out to local Cheonyeo who were dissatisfied with the emperor, Numanesh's people began forming a powerful coalition. Numaneš's Ashērykan tactics and the conservative and inept Gyeowai high command allowed the Ursumar to crush the armies of Gyeowai. With little remaining resistance, Numaneš marched on the capital with support from the rebellious Cheonyeo and deposed the emperor, defeating his forces easily. The emperor, refusing to surrender, ritually killed himself and his sons vowed revenge. This would begin a longer war, as while most of the Wanyun immediately defected to Numaneš, the southern provinces remained loyal. After several years of conflict, a deal was struck: Numaneš and his people would gain the lands of the old Wanyun of Haowun, while Gyeowai would be able to keep the lands they had before their Wanyunship. Gyeowai was also unable to call themselves a Wanyun, and though retaining the same government structure, they were forced to adopt the name "State of Gyeowai" as they are neither a Wanyun or Kingdom, really.
