Republic of Salumnia
The Republic of Salumnia is an oddity among the Alcediner City-States, for it is the only one to be built on an island, as well as the only one to lack the famed walls of these cities. That's because Salumnia was neve intended to be a city in the first place, but rather a refuge for those fleeing the Erleting raids of the 8th century. The city would later develop on its own, avoiding conquest by surrounding powers and establishing a unique identity.
History
Salumnia was a member of the Costtorali League which benefited from the early league to recover a number of small settlements along the nearby coast. These settlements, once part of the prosperous valley farmlands of Eastern Alcedina, had been sacked by the Erleting during their invasions, and their restoration would improve Salumni'a position significantly, while allowing refugees from those towns to return home. Salumnia leveraged this to expand trade with the various Blazennian tribes near its borders, establishing a trade relation and mercantile ties. The Salumic were the first to trade with Blazennians as opposed to the nearby, safer, Fraspika. However, with the expansion of Fraspika, these trade routes became less lucrative and led to a decline in Salumnic influence within the League, which was exploited by the other cities and eventually led to Salumnia's departure in 1157.
Salumnia would continue to support democratic government until the mid-1200s, when Erleting attacks sezied and looted their coastal possessions once more, limiting the state to its island. Thanks to the collapse of the republic's power, a dictatorship was established in 1245, a mere 3 years after the sack of their last mainland city, the once-fortress of Villis. This dictator would later establish his own Gens Tyrani, and the family ruled the city for a number of decades. Thanks to the influence of trade with Blazennians, Salumnia was actually the first nation to embrace Blazeology, in 1247, with the Gens Tyrani using faith to bring Salumnia closer to the Empire and make the populace into loyal citizens. After this, Salumnia became closely tied to the western Blazennians, though not the Blazennian government itself. Indeed, Salumnia flirted with joining the Empire several times, even being a nominal member between 1348 and 1472. However, as the Fragmentation Period continued in Blazennia, membership, even nominal, no longer carried weight with the Salumnics, and they formally repudiated Blazennian authority, continuing to trade with their traditional partners.
Between 1348 and 1704, the Salumnics made several expeditions to the mainland, some of which gained small territories and others failed miserably. Unfortunately for Salumnia, their location just off the coast of several river valleys meant that they were forced to face a wide array of ever-changing Erleting tribes, which had continued to develop throughout this period and become formidable foes by 1700. Luckily for Salumnia, 1704 marks the date when valuable resources were discovered off the coast of Ifyrial. This prompted Salumnia to begin colonizing the continent, which was very successful. Salumnia had some of the largest colonial possessions of any Alcediner state, which buoyed their economy and allowed them to fight off the Erleting.
Salumnia would become close allies with the Blazennian Constituent of Vindaun, which culminated in Vindaun's Tembodar II being elected as Emperor. However, his reign would collapse when he was assasinated, prompting Salumnia to declare war on the new Emperor, Alezar VI, a move which might seem foolish as the Blazennian Empire was thousands of times as powerful as Salumnia. However, Alezar was the Duke of Staussau, which is landlocked, so he had no navy with which to fight Salumnia, and none of his subjects were so inclined. Alezar would end up being overthrown in 1889, and the new emperor recognized Salumnia's support of the anti-Staussau cause. However, the death of Tembodar meant that Vindaun fell into the hands of a different family, and eventually became a possession of the Grand Duchy of Barloem, so Salumnia would lose out on one of their most favored trade opportunities and allies.
The end of Vindaun's alliance would have grave consequences for Salumnia, for when Dragan Ivar's Army invaded, Salumnia's land possessions were his first target. Though Ivar' lacked a navy, he was able to sack the coastal possessions of Salumnia. Salumnia's call for aid went unanswered because the Blazennian Emperor at the time was Jägenmann III Oallbrith, “The Mad”, who was of course completely insane and did not send aid. Though the Blazennian Empire would later assist Salumnia in retaking their coastal holdings, it came at a great cost. Blazennian troops occupied most of the valley and riverlands, leaving Salumnia without the ability to invade upriver and take lands in the valley.
The complete failure of Salumnia's Gen Tyrani to actually project power or defeat the Erleting on their own led to a revolution in 1963, with a period of mob rule later being replaced by a more structured republic in 1977. This, however, did not stop Salumnia from counter-cleansing the Erleting from their lands and expelling the half-Erelting, half-Alcediner population.
Agriculture & Industry
Salumnia is primarily a grower of crops such as oranges, lemons, pistachios, and even some sugar. Their actual staple crops have long come from their coastal holdings on the mainland, which is why these are of such value to Salumnia. In fact, the island was originally planted as several orchards, with the development of the town and later city of Salumnia only occuring because people were pushed off the mainland. Salumnia is also a major center for fishery, with Salumnic fleets traditionally keeping Erleting out of the ocean and preventing them from fishing to monopolize the industry.
