Principality of Mediolene
The principality of Mediolene is a middling Alcediner state which sits just down the coast from the more powerful and cosmopolitan city-state of Alliogens. Despite Alliogens dominating the region's oceanic trade, Mediolene has historically been able to carve out its own niche as a powerful, land-based country. Indeed, for several centuries, Mediolene's rulers framed themselves as kings, forming a powerful state which dominated the interior of Alcedina and conquered a number of other cities. However, the duchy was eventually destroyed in a coalition by the cities of Tridunai, Alliogens, and internal rebels. Modern Mediolene is much smaller, having lost their prestigious position.
History
The city of Mediolene was first settled by the elves of the Empire of Oleandron, and was a major center of power during the period, as it was the main fortress along the coastal plain, though less defensible than the smaller town of Alliogens, which benefitted from sitting on a peninsula. Mediolene would breifly become independent following the collapse of Oleandron, but would soon come under the sway of the Kingdom of Sunþiruda, which captured the city after a proetracted siege in 922. Mediolene was one of the earliest cities to abandon the kingdom after its descent into civil war, although they remained weak for some time after attacks by the Sunþirudan garrison which remained in Alliogens led to their inability to take the coastline. After this fiasco, the Gen Vicitini would come to control the state, being appointed as dictators. Despite setbacks and political upheaval, Mediolene would eventually prevail after the fall of Sunþiruda continued and the garrison in Alliogens abandoned it. By 1045, Mediolene's Tyranid had a powerful state which included all lands along the northern coast up to the city of Alliogens itself, which nonetheless paid tribute. North of the city remained a lawless region, overrun by Erleting, that Mediolene never tried to conquer, being content with placing their border along the river.
Gens Vicitini would continue to rule the city for many centuries, but at first things were precarious. Although Alliogens was nominally their subject, in fact it commanded far more trade and the rulers of that city continued to be wealthier than Gens Vicitini. Hence, the subject-master relationship had already faded by the year 1100, when the first Mediolene-Alliogens war occured. This was would be won by Alliogens, and actually saw the Vicitini deposed for a brief period, though they returned to the city by 1115. The second war between the two would soon break out in 1124, and when it ended in 1128, Alliogens was once more reduced to their peninsula.
The back-and-forth wars would continue for another century or so, but Mediolene was never seriously threatened. Mediolene would soon begin expanding into the interior, and gained a hegemonic position over many other cities in this regard, cuttting off Piscodia and Alliogens off from interior expansion. This led to conflicts with both, and though Alliogens once again escaped unharmed, Piscodia would be conquered in 1332. Mediolene would continue their expansion after this, conquering Insulana very easily in 1346, and Floren (though only after a long siege) in 1355. The Vicitini would then declare Mediolene a Kingdom, establishing close ties with the Blazennian Empire and expanding their trade through Floren and Piscodia, in order to try to choke Alliogens out of the market.
This approach would prove unstable, and led to the formation of an anti-Mediolene league. By 1393 these tensions boiled over, and war began, and the Mediolene were hard pressed as rebels emerged from nearly all their subject cities, as well as forces from Tridunai in the south and Alliogens in the north. The southern garrisons of the Mediolene won a stunning victory over the Floreni in 1395, crushing their forces, but were then cut off by Insulanan and Tridunai troops. Perhaps the north could have relieved them, but those troops were likewise encircled by the Alliogens, who landed behind them and trapped them between their city and the river. These two moves would see Mediolene's war effort hamstrung and though they continued to fight for another 6 years, in 1401 they capitulated. Gens Vicitini was exiled to Blazennia (whered they still exist to this day as merchants) and the kingdom was replaced with several independent city-states.
Shortly after their defeat, Mediolene would fall into the hands of Gens Alciano, but the Alciano never brought the city to the heights it had seen in the 14th century. For example, the city of Pistallo, liberated during the war, would remain a thorn in their side all the way until the present. Their inland claims proved easier to take, but due to the fractured nature of them as well as Erleting raids, this was only completed during the 19th century. Colonization likewise saw some minor success, but not enough for Mediolene to raise itself to hegemon status once more. In fact, the 1883 war between Alliogens and Mediolene saw their colony reduced to just a small trade port.
Mediolene, as a land power, was hit hard by Dragan Ivar's Army, which devastated their robust internal network of towns. Then, during their attempts to reconquer the interior, they were outcompeted by Alliogens, which expanded into the mountains for the first time. Mediolene's longtime Alciano rulers were almost overthrown due to their failure to defend the interior, but saw a surge of popular support after Alliogens sezied them.
