Du Poin Riders

The Du Poin Riders were a group of violent horseman who raided settlements across the Northern Commons and Western Commons in the years following the Twenty-Year War.

History

Originally, horses in the Northern Commons were tightly under the control of the most powerful ranching families, in order to prevent a highly mobile and thus potentially dangerous population. This system became dislodged during the Twenty-Year War, which required noble Alois families to give up much of their horses, especially ones bred for combat.   During the course of the war, the military of the High Kingdom of Beurum lost track several of these horses through the chaos of battle as well as mismanagement. The war also produced a number of combat-hardened veterans, who in many cases returned to their homes with little ability to support themselves.   One of these veterans was a charismatic individual named Poin de Peitrus. During the final years of the war, he managed to steal a large swath of cavalry horses from a Trebai force. He and a number of other dissatisfied soldiers took off and began to launch small attacks on prominent Alois families, such as the Laframbois  Over time, the organization grew from less than ten individuals to over two hundred. The Du Poin Riders became an especially feared bandit group for a number of reasons. One reason was that the riders were not confined to any one hideout, almost never camping in the same place two nights in a row. This made them incredibly hard to track down. In addition, the riders targeted the stables of ranching families, adding more horses to their collection with each raid. As the organization grew larger, they started to breed their own horses and sometimes split up to make multiple different attacks at once.    Some Alois commoners began to view the Du Poin Riders as heroes as time passed. This was because they mainly targeted powerful Alois families, who were known to exploit workers for the purpose of accruing more wealth.
